Develop "Golden Flutes And Great Escapes" Games For Windows?
May 2, 2011
Recently I downloaded a PDF copy of Delton T. Horn's book, "Golden Flutes and Great Escapes: How to Write Adventure Games." Later on, I found that a fellow named C.E. Forman translated these games into DOS using the C programming language. But now, I have decided to take on the ultimate challenge of translating these games into the GUI world of Windows, starting with "The Pirates' Treasure Hunt." But what has me stumped is the fact that I want to create a 5X5 grid that displays a map of the island on which my crewman is currently ashore. Does anyone know and understand what I'm trying to do, and can anyone help me out? Better yet, have these programs already been done for Windows, and if so, where can I find them?
how do i get my program to load the windows built in games? I.E at the click of a button Solitaire loads up i have tryed a couple of ways but nothing so far has come even close to working.
So I need to write a program that will approximate PHI (the golden ratio) using Fibonacci Numbers. It has to be within a negative power of 10 (between -1 and -16) oh PHI. So for example, if I put -2 into the input, the approximation of PHI would have to be with 10^-2 of the number that we're using of 1.618033988749895. Also, we need to show how many Fibonacci terms that were used to get to that number and the difference that the number that we approximated is to PHI.
I develop an VB application unter XP with VS 2003 (.NET 1.1).
Is it possible to run it on a system with Windows 7 (x64) or do i have to change my programming environment ???
The code itself is in a directory on a windwos server and the workstation has only a link to the EXE-file server01programsigiksigik.exe. until VISTA, it worked, if i call .net configuration wizard and give "full trust" to "intranet".
I am looking in to using sharpDevelop to develop Windows (.NET) applications over using Visual Studio. I'm just wondering if there are any serious limitations to using SharpDevelop over VS? The price is certainly right and at first glance it seems like a pretty decent IDE. I'm just wondering if it is compatible with VS. I mean if I am collaborating with other developers that are using VS, can we seamlessly pass projects/solutions back and forth and work on them? Just wondering what people's opinions are.
I'm developing a Windows Service in VB.NET 2008, but I feel like I'm going to have an aneurysm. To debug the service, I've added a 15 second wait to the initialization code, which gives me time to start the service and attach the .NET debugger before anything happens, so I can hit breakpoints and such. I really miss "integrated" debugging with this type of workaround, and testing seems to be a huge pain.
What's the best way to do "regular" debugging of a Windows Service that's in development? One option I'd considered was moving all of my logic to a DLL project, leaving only control logic in the service itself, and then creating a Forms project that essentially just had "start" and "stop" buttons on it, and called into the DLL to do everything else. This way, I can debug my code normally, and then just deploy the compiled service when the DLLs are ready.

Hello I want to create a windows form application program that can create games something like Gamemaker or Klik & Play (butt less advanced) with D&D "Drag and Drop" events and actions.
I wish to develop windows mobile applications, preferably using VB (I 've done this in the past with VB6). What do I need to install? All my searches result in information about using 2005/2008 versions of Visual Studio, which seems odd if Microsoft are pushing to use Visual Studio 2010. I would like to use VS 2010. So, can I develop Windows mobile applications using VB 2010? If not, what version of VS do I need and what language should I use?
don't complicate the issue with a load of flannel. I just want to know that I need to install - this, with this SDK, these utilities and write your software in this language (ideally VB).
I'm am wanting to get out of access dbs and into something more solid, ive heard that sqlite or mysql are great database tools for your applications. I am also looking for a database with a GUi to manage the database more easily and links on how to incorporate the database into my projects, etc. So any links, videos, suggestions i'd like to hear them all.
I have an application that updates a great number of fields on a pretty short interval timer. (on a standard form)Question is as follows... which one of these statements will work better for this? (working better = faster/smoother)Dim textToUpdate as string
if textbox1.text <> textToUpdate then textbox1.text = textToUpdate
From the exception it throws, it cannot find a critical database file called cakecreationdb.accdb. I am at my wits end over this problem and have been up all night trying to solve it. I am quickly running out of time to do so.
The copy to output is set at copy if newer. I have also tried copy always and still get the same result.
I have an application that has an Ms Access 2007 DataBase which runns great if access is installed. Is there any code that I can use in vb that I would be able to run access with out installing it.
I have been looking for like 3 hours trying to find a dll or anything to make a simple cards game, but everything I find is oriented to C.
In this page A FreeCell game using Cards.dll - CodeProject they talk about just what I want, but I cannot make it work in Visual Studio 2008 using Visual Basic.net, I dont know if that has anything to do with the Vista OS I am using.
In the page I mention the author says "There are many good articles on the net on how to use the Cards dynamic link library" and I am sure the good articles are there, but my good luck has make me looping around the same nonsense results so I end up with nothing after 3 hours search.
The game I want to make is just something for a project we must do in class, how to start making a cards game fast and simple. If someone knows about a cards dll that works fine with vbnet, that someone would be my new hero.
the thing is that i am creating a little launcher shell that will start on a lan-party computer full with games.all the things i am doing with it is for my own use only and will not be used for harmfull stuff. in the other topic i got the intention that they thought i was a cracker of hacker or something.im am just creating a launcher app that launches my games without the use of explorer.exe to be loaded with windows.i have done several things to try to load a game when i press a button but they always crash. when i start the games normally there is no problem.first i thought it needed the use of explorer.exe but when i tested my app with explorer.exe running i got the same result. so i think its my app that is causing the problem.
Dim startInfo As System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo Dim pStart As New System.Diagnostics.Process startInfo = New System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo("C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Related Designs\ANNO 1404\Anno4.exe")
[code].....
as for the people who replied in the other topic. the register files you have seen in my code was for activating the GameShell.exe to run as shell instead of the explorer.exe for the current user and for all users and to restore it to explorer.exe.
i have a question regarding how to developed a multiplayer games using VB. i am a student and beginner on VB world.i managed to create a simple Sudoku game using VB knowledge from the internet and some books.I am fan of Sudoku games published in newspaper everyday.but now i really interested on how to develop the multi-player version using the same coding. is it possible?
i tried to write a script on developed tic-tac-toe for multi-player based from a book using VB6 for an example but got many errors. how to develop a simple multiplayer for Sudoku? i'm using VB 2008 Express Edition.
Now my question is, is it possible to use Hotkeys and ScreenCapture in a Fullscreen game?If so, how? What im acutaly trying to do is a program to take a screenshot ingame (for some reason, this game doesnt have an option to take screenshots ingame.. Bad Company 2)
I am trying to make a two player game. Each player is able to move left and right, aim up and down, jump, and shoot. On some occasions when a number of keys are being pressed at once, some other keys wont register. For example, you can hold a key down to keep moving left, keep holding a key down to aim up(changing the angle), keep holding a key down to keep jumping, keep holding a key down to keep shooting. and there are TWO players at the same time:if both players are shooting, only one can aim down(press key to change angle). but it is fine if both trying to aim up ? Can the keyboard not handle too many keys at once?
There's a game that I play, that can be modded. I create mods for it. But some people do not know how to apply the mods by themselves, and just explaining to one person takes about an hour alone. So what I'm wanting to do:Create a program that can add - remove - detect what mods are being used. We'll use'C:GameAddon' For an example target. What I'm wanting:Check Boxes that automatically check when the mod is already in the 'C:GameAddon' folder when the program starts up.and UnCheck'd if the addon isn't in there.
I am looking to write my own media library and was wondering are there any free .Net APIs out there to identify a product based on a given barcode? As a secondary point are there .Net APIs to return cover art for books, CD, games etc based on a barcode.
I realize that this is a very popular subject, especially amongst budding developers. The drive to create games may be the reason you started working with Visual Basic in the first place. After stepping through a few samples and getting the hang of working with user controls on a form, it may be very tempting to start to throw some PictureBoxes and a Timer on a Form and start to implement some game logic. Seems easy enough, right?
To some extent, this is a true statement. You could start to do this and it would be easy enough at first. But when you begin to try to calculate collision and animate or rotate your sprites, you may start to run into some difficulty. And attempts to circumvent the problems often lead to even worse issues. This can cause an endless spiral of misery which could leave you thinking VB just isnt meant to make games!
The initial problem that most people face is the desire to use a PictureBox (or any other control) as the logical Sprite container for the elements in the game. It makes sense since the control appears to provide a lot of the required functionality already and its easy to extend it with more properties as needed.
The issue though is that Windows Forms Controls are designed to be drawn statically that is, they arent meant to move around in real-time. You can of course move them at run-time, but this is normally an on-demand operation (something which occurs because the user just took an action like clicking a button or menu item). Attempting to move controls in real-time puts a heavy strain on your application and can cause poor performance quickly.[code]....
I am writing a application where i need to know which games are installed on a system.I have 3 ways by which i think i can detect the games
1: Scan specific parts of registry and look for key names that match with a List of Publishers. The list is manually maintained.
2: Scan the hard disk for and do same as in step 1
3: run the program in background and check for programs in memory that use a large portion of memory(which games always do) and if they use Direct X ( Which all games do except for some) then its a game.
Now i have been thinking about it and first and second method seems to be in need of a updated database ie list of publishers to make out if a particular program is game.
I'm trying to read a log file for a game so I can extract certant info from it and track my stats as the game is running, but I keep getting access denied error for the log file. I would also like to have the log read only after it has been changed but the event handler never fires. I'm assuming it has to do with the access error. Can someone give me an example of how to watch a text file that's in use by another program and read it after it changes. The code I have works if I open the file in notpad, change it then save it but not when the game is running. I did it once before for the same game but lost my code and there are other programs that parse the log file so I know it can be done.
