Directory.GetLastWriteTime Returns Wrong Time?
Nov 26, 2009
I'm trying to get the last time the directory was updated (written to), and if it's later than the date i have stored i want to process that directory for new/changed information. The problem I'm having is that the Directory.GetLastWriteTime(path) seems to only get updated with creating and deletion of files.when a user just updates an existing file (for example a text document) the GetLastWriteTime remains the same for the directory even though the modified time of the text file has changed.
I don't want to itterate through the files in the directory, is there any reason the directory last write time does not get updated when modifying an existing file?

This is driving me out of my mind. My Gridview returns the wrong rowindex after sorting or filtering. I am using a detailsview to edit the selected record however I found out I was editing the wrong record. I am using this statement to retrieve the selected record from the gridview
DetailsView1.PageIndex = GridView1.SelectedRow.DataItemIndex however this only returns the correct index if the grid stays in the original form, meaning not sorted or filtered. I guess the statement returns the index with respect to the gridview not the actual table. First of all is this this a .NET bug? and second of all how do I retrieve the correct record to edit it in the detailsview either by getting the correct index or a key such as AssetID in my case. I am using VisualStudio 2010 Professional and the code is in VB. Please do not give me C# as I don't use it.

We're using team build with AssemblyInfoTask to increment the build number in a nightly build. The build number is displayed in the application using My.Application.Info.Version.Build.This has been working fine for years. But since we branched the sources and started using file references instead of project references (have no idea if that's what causes the problem), the last build number is displayed instead of the current one.
The compiled files (dll's and exe's) have the correct build number, if checked by right clicking the file in Explorer and viewing detailed properties. However when the same exe-file is executed, the UI displays the previous build number. If I edit the AssemblyInfo.vb file manually (just set another number, save the file, and set it back again), both file properties in Explorer and the UI at runtime displays the correct build number. How can this happen? What can be done to avoid this strange behavior?

TempUserPath = My.Computer.FileSystem.SpecialDirectories.MyDocuments Returns the string "C:UsersOwnerDocuments" but that folder is actually named "My Documents" (i.e., is "C:UsersOwnerMy Documents" in the Finder). When I try to create a new folder called "Documents" in the Owner directory, Windows asks if I want to merge its contents with the My Documents folder. If I say yes, I am left with only the My Documents folder and none named "Documents".Thus when I attempt to read or write a file to the TempUserPath location, I get an "access denied" error. This happens even after I manually change the name of the folder from "My Documents" to "Documents".

The Now() function in VB.NET returns date and time which is different from the system time that I see on the right-bottom on the notification bar. It is 15 hours slower than the system time. Has anyone ever met this problem? I'm using .NET 2.0.

I have problems with my *.bat file when it is run as administrator on windows 7 with UAC enabled. The problem is that the robocopy command is looking in the wrong directory for the source files. The bat file and a number of folders are placed in the same temporary directory somewhere on a computer and the bat file is supposed to copy all files from one of those folders to a certain folder in the C:Program files....... directory structure.Example string:

I am developing a Windows Service (Yes, windows service) using VB2008 and am having trouble determining whether a remote folder exists. The IF in question goes something like this:
If NOT system.io.directory.exists(strFolder) then
System.io.directory.createdirectory(strFolder)
End if
The problem is that the above test (excluding the NOT) always returns False, regardless of whether the folder exists or not. So, even if the folder exists, the next statement tries to create an already existing folder which does not go well.
The weird part(s) - after some tests
The system.io.directory.exists() works well when I type it in the immediate window for both local and network resources
It also works well when it is within a normal app (that is, not a service) regardless of whether it is local or network resource
The exists() method when in the service works well if the folder being tested is on the local machine, but fails when it is remote network resource, regardless of whether it is a true UNC or a mapped drive. It is not user's rights, as I have tested with both my own user and the localsystem user and have tested with network resources where I do have access rights. When I try to debug, the PC starts playing the Twilight Zone Theme (Ok, I am kidding about this one )Doing some searching I found that others are complaining about the same behavior, but no suitable answer has been found.

I have a ListView that populates and displays a user's data (via a profile system in VWD 2008) during Page_Load and also when I go from the EditItemTemplate to the ItemTemplate. When I go to the edit screen again, my DropDownList and RadioButtonList controls display the first items in the corresponding tables instead of the correct profile values.
I don't understand why the controls populate correctly the first and second times but not on the third time (that's right, the third time is NOT a charm).how to solve this problem?

I've got a DataGridview I want to remove columns from as it greatly increases performance when I format the DGV. The first time I remove columns in a loop (using the removeat) property, everythings fine. But when I try to remove more columns in another loop, it appears to remove the wrong columns and displays the wrong data. In other words, it displays the wrong data and headers; and the columns it does show has headers and cells that don't match.

I have a function that returns a value of the numbers of files, folders and subfolders in a directory. But i can't seem to handle the "UnauthorizedAccessException" which i get from certain read only files or folders. I tried to use both the DirectoryInfo.GetDirectories() and DirectoryInfo.GetFiles() methods. as you can see from the code below. This exception is thrown in start of the for each loop, so i'm not able to handel it with a try, Catch Ex As UnauthorizedAccessException to cintinue the loop.

back in May minitech gave me a code to loop inside the C drive and list all of the files.

The code is only good for one specific path such as C: est, but what i was thinking was to search in more directory's at one time. Before i go and make integers, and very bad code practices. I was thinking if someone could suggest a better way of accomplishing my task.

I have some code which gets child items for a menu via the GetChildren function which takes a list of menuData: Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
If menuData.Children IsNot Nothing Then
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
End If
Next
If I check if menudata.children isnot nothing, it always is nothing because the GetChildren function is yet to run (providing the child items, which do exist). If I remove this check and just have this code:
Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
Next
Then I am presented with a Object reference not set to an instance of an object error on menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
