DllImport Vs Declare A Reference To A Function In An External DLL From
Jun 1, 2009
I notice in the MSDN documentation that there are multiple ways to declare a reference to a function in an external DLL from within a VB.NET program. The confusing thing is that MSDN claims that you can only use the DllImportAttribute class with Shared Function prototypes "in rare cases", but I couldn't find the explanation for this statement, while you can simply use the Declare keyword instead.

at the same time how to declare this method without referenced dll SSDP is an interface so how to declare this interface for my usage is this Correct ...?

I have a .net class library that works fine. This library has a reference to en external dll. I have converted all its class to comclasses and checked the com interopt checkbox in order to use it as com library. I also registered it with regasm.
I have handle of a usercontrol on external application in vb.net.I know class type of that user control.I want to get refrence to that object to check some properties of that object
When you add a file that the project will use (in my case an Excel file) and set it to be copied to the output directory, you can of course add a string to a class with the file name in it to use the file. I was wondering though does Visual Studio automatically generate a member somewhere that contains the name of the file? Perhaps in the My Namespace?
Kind of like how when you set the Build Action to Resource, Visual Studio generates a member in the My.Resources namespace for reference. Whenever I change the name of the file in the Solution Explorer it would be nice if I had some method that would automatically update the file name in the code.
I get an error :FatalExecutionEngineError was detectedMessage: The runtime has encountered a fatal error. The address of the error was at 0x79e71bd7, on thread 0x11f0. The error code is 0xc0000005. This error may be a bug in the CLR or in the unsafe or non-verifiable portions of user code. Common sources of this bug include user marshaling errors for COM-interop or PInvoke, which may corrupt the stack. How do I translate it correctly ?
How can we declare a thread for function in vb.net Actually i have to declare nine functions which takes the oracle command as input parameter and return multiple values ( return types will includes datatime, string and a datatable ) . So to return multiple values from function , i have declared a structure and returning as a structure.but now the issue is !!! : As the thread is a void type and doesnt accept return types which function returns ... Now how can i declare thread for a function which accepts and returns arguments.
I use background worker almost daily and works great. Today I came to an instance though where I needed to put my background worker in a separate project then the one I was running because I needed to use this class in two different projects in my solution. When I tested the coding on a winforms form, it works perfectly, handling my coding on the background thread. When I try to reference this class from an external project, all of my coding seems to run just fine, but it does not appear to be doing anything on a background thread as it should be, causing my main window to lockup.
Is there any way around this / what is the best practice for ASYNC calls in an external class.Note I basically created a class that u call start, and an event fires when data is ready, so it's not like my external project is waiting for the method to complete.
Solution ABC has two projects. Project A and Project B. Project A is my WPF application and B is my DLL doing the work. Inside project A I have
Dim SmartCardData as new Solution.B() SmartCardData.Start() Project B has a sub
I'm fairly new to learning visual basic. I'm trying to create a program that dynamically generates a EXE file that performs mouse movements and keystrokes. To dynamically generate EXE files, I am using the CODEDOM API for Visual Basic.
In my application I'm trying to invoke a function from an external DLL (this DLL is compiled in C++)I have this code to declare the DLL function:
Code: <DllImport("{DLLPATH}", CharSet:=CharSet.Auto, SetLastError:=True)> _ Public Shared Function functionName(<MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.VBByRefStr)> ByRef Name1 As
I'm using a 3rd party DLL to access a proprietary Database. It's designed to invoke a function called "CALL_ME_FUNCTION" to make the datarows available to my program. What makes it difficult is the CALL_ME_FUNCTION is in the VB program and therefor, external to the DLL iteself. I've got the CALL_ME_FUNCTION written in my program, but how do you give access of it to the DLL? I've written lots of code that invokes functions inside a external DLL, but this is the first time I've encountered a DLL that needs to run a VB function.
I have a function in an external library, for which I do not have the source code, which is causing problems. If I were putting in a breakpoint in my own code, I would put it on the first line of the function, but as it is an external function, I do not have that option. Is there any way to as Visual Studio to break any time the function is called? My current workaround is to do a "Find All References" and put an individual breakpoint on every single call to the function, which is a sucky way of doing things.
I have Listview which databound to Dataset with about 20 items per row. I have a function which executes on each ItemTemplate appearance and gets about 10 params from Eval("something"). So basically one function builds and image from 10 parameters.Instead of passing 10 Eval("something") to the function is it possible to pass it whole row and how to use this row inside of function because it is not simple DataRow or ListView row which i can access as array of items (datacolumns).Reason i do that because function looks ugly and each time i need to change it i need to deal with dozens of items.
I have been trying to correctly pass the value of a textbox as a variable to a function that reside in my App_Code folder when triggered by a click event. I can't seem to get it right. Here is the code behind for the aspx page with the textbox and the click event:(Error is on 4th line)
Public Sub btnCouponCode_Click1(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs, Optional ByVal CouponCode As Char) Handles btnCouponCode.Click lblSubtotal.Text = Calculations.CalcSubTotalPrice().ToString("C")
When I declare two datatables and fill them both from a datatable returned by a function in class, that when i filter the one it seems to filter the other aswell?
For example:
I declare the datatable and initiate my class:
Dim DatatableOne As New Datatable Dim DatatableTwo As New Datatable
Dim MyClass As New MyClass
I then call the function that returns a datatable and apply it to datatable1 and 2 Then fill two DataGrids with the table:
i want to know how to use vbscript to declare the function that handles the button onclick event or set a function that handles all button onlick event! both will do i.e) ihave a function
"sub xxx() end sub"
and i generate the buttons using vbscript. i can declare the button id, text without problem.
--dim obj as new button() obj.id="aaa" obj.text="ooo"
the above lines work just fine but when i write obj.onclick = "xxx", it doesn't work. by making settings on the function to handle all button onlick event is also acceptible for me!
how should I DLLImport thing in VB.NET?Example would be:
<DllImport("user32.dll", SetLastError:=True, CharSet:=CharSet.Auto)> _ Private Shared Function GetWindowText(ByVal hwnd As IntPtr, ByVal lpString As StringBuilder, ByVal cch As Integer) As Integer End Function
If I put it inside a Class or somewhere else, I get "DLLimport is not defined" I am using VS2008 (pro)
I have a Javascript function in the js file (test.js) and I need to call her in visual basic 2010 enter her input parameter and load response javascript functions in visual basic.
I have an application (app.exe) that has a VB Module in its source code (Module1). The module has a function called Function1. I need to call this function from another application. The module is not marked as public, so adding a reference to app.exe won't work. I'm trying to use reflection (Assembly.LoadFrom()) but unless I'm way off base, the module would have to be a class in order for me to get an instance of it.
Please nobody ask me "what have you tried?" I tried a million different things and let's just say "none of them work." So I'm looking for someone that has specific experience with doing exactly what I'm trying to do. If you don't have that experience, please move on to the next question and ignore mine.
The code snippet below is from a c# class library Moserware.Skills.dll that I would like to use in my VB.Net project.I understand that I need to use Dllimport to gain access to the TwoPlayerTrueSkillCalculator class and specifically the CalculateNewRating() function.[code]
I have an unmanaged C++ dll that I am using in my program. I have successfully used several functions using DllImport. I have run into a problem with one function that takes a structure as input. I originally tried building a structure to pass to the function, but this was unsucessful. So i created a class to define the needed structure. When I pass this, I get no error message, but also no data is passed back to this variable. I have a C++ example of how to use this function, but I don't know how this translates to VB 2005. Here is how they call it in C++ .
[DllImport("odbc32.dll")] it is working well with 32 bit environment( os) but using 64 bit it is not working. Is there any odbc64.dll? I tried it but dllnotfoundexception was found. So does it has any other name. How to import it? how to use this dll or both in same application.
I am trying to call an external C++ function using VB.NET (answers in C# are fine, I can convert back) which returns a list of device names. This comes in the form of a pointer to a null-terminated array of null-terminated char arrays (correct me if I've misunderstood what I'm dealing with) with a function signature:
long GetNames(char*** names)
Most of the answers to similar questions I've found have involved something more like:
long GetNames(char** names, int length)
It appears from what I've read that I need to give it an IntPtr but I'm uncertain as to how this should be initialized, and in my case I don't know the length of the array. At the moment, in the VB module, I have:
<DllImport("MyExternal.dll", CallingConvention:=CallingConvention.Cdecl)> _ Function GetNames(ByRef names as IntPtr) As UInteger End Function
I've tried calling the function by passing an IntPtr initialized as IntPtr.Zero or using Marshall.AllocHGlobal, but I always get an AccessViolationException.
Any ideas on how I should be calling this function and how I get the return value into a managed string array would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I've found a sample function call in native C as follows:
I want to Sum of the calculated column Red which is calculated in the Function IsRed() that return an integer. When I run the query I get the following error: Method 'Int32 IsRed(Int32)' has no supported translation to SQL.How should I rewrite this to get it to work.
