Draw Users Attention To A DataGridView Column?
May 6, 2009
I have a DataGridview. The user has to pick an option in the datagridview. I am contemplating either putting a context menu in the DGV. I am assuming that I will fire my context menu on the Cell Enter event. However prior to that I need to draw the users attention to the column of interest.
I know I can hide all other columns but his is not userful as they need to be visible. I am also assuming that I can highlight the column in the form load event. Or I could use some sort of Call Out box in the form load event that draws the user to the column. Can you create a call out box from a context menu?

I need to get the DataGridView to perform the way it should perform. I'm new to the .NET environment, but I learn fairly quickly. However, I find it difficult to decipher themassive black box of the DataGridView control enough to make it do anything other than what it already does--Draw very slowly.

The purpose of my application is to keep track of users waiting to use another application that may only be accessed by one user at a time.My vb.net application adds the persons name to the end of a text file, removes names when a person either gets to the front of the line or exits by closing my app.It regularly checks the list, and when the user gets to the front of the list, it notifies him and loads that other program.My problem is, I don't want the user to have to sit staring at my app until they get to the front of the line.I want the app to cause the computer to emit a regular, slightly annoying beep,even if the user has minimized my app or pulled up Microsoft Word on top of it, and continue to beep repeatedly until the user switches back to my app and presses a key or clicks the mouse.

My query returns 4 columns. One column is a unique identifier for the record. I'm trying to hide that column so the user doesn't see it. I'm going to add an edit button and hopefully I'll be able to allow the user to click on the record's edit button and edit only one of the remaining 3 columns and I expect I'll need that hidden value to do the update. I've got code below but it doesn't work. It gives me an exception, "Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index ".
Dim MySqlCommand As New SqlCommand
MySqlCommand.Connection = MySqlConnection
MySqlCommand.CommandText = "SELECT ..................."
MySqlConnection.Open()
GridView1.DataSource = MySqlCommand.ExecuteReader

It seems that on clicking datagridview column header, the column will be automatically sorted based on the column type. I have a column showing some numbers. If column type is string, it sorts "1","20","3" into "1","20","3". If column type is double, it sorts into "1","3","20" which is the result that I want. However, there might be some erros in the numbers and error messages(text) will show in the cell instead of numbers. So I cannot set the column type as double. I want to ignore these error messages and sort all the numbers. How can I do this?
Also, I need to add some background colors to different rows in datagridview. So in the column header click event, I call the bkgColor Sub to achieve this. My question is that how can I override the sorting method in this event?
Private Sub DataGridView1_ColumnHeaderMouseClick(sender As Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewCellMouseEventArgs) Handles DataGridView1.ColumnHeaderMouseClick

Dim Comp = From C In db.Table1 _
Select C.Completed, C.Taken, C.Namne
Datagridview1.DataSource = Comp
Am using the Entity Framework and Columns Completed and Taken are of bit Datatype. When the query results are displayed in the datagridview, these bit columns are returned as of ColumnType Textbox - so i get a Datagridview textbox column with true or false string values.
I want to display Completed and Taken as Checkbox columns (either ticked for True or un-ticked for false) but ofcourse i can't do this in EditColumn dialogue because the Datagridview is unbound.
how can i change this in code at runtime

I have an application that uses DataGridView in two different locations. In one location, the DataGridView shows everything fine. In the other location, whenever the form containing the DataGridView is initially loaded, only about half of the visible portion of the DataGridView is actually drawn; through the rest of the DataGridView, the underlying windows graphics can be seen; if you scroll down through the rest of the data, you get a choppy view of what corresponds to the bottom row being scrolled upward through each scrolled row. The only ways to get the DataGridView to show the correct values are either to select a cell, forcing that particular cell to redraw; or to invalidate an area of the window, causing that area to redraw (which it does do correctly).
I've compared how each of these DataGridViews were set up: For the one that works fine, the DataGridView is statically bound to a BindingSource, which is statically bound to a DataSet; the one that has the draw problem is statically bound to a Binding Source that is dynamically bound to a DataTable during the creation of the form.
What could be causing my DataGridView to not display correctly?

Is there a way to find the column index of a datagridview column using the columns DataPropertyName?I currently use a loop (shown below in the class) which is kind of ugly, but it works. I'd like to do something like this, which seems more elegant.My goal is this, I store the users DataGridView column settings (i.e. DisplayIndex, Visible, & Width).When the user opens the form that contains the datagridview I want to get those settings from the database and apply the settings to the datagridview.[code]

I have a DataGridView (dgv) on a Windows form (VB.NET) which is bound to a datatable. One of the bound columns is a an ID (Foreign Key) to another datatable. All I want to do is Hide the ID column and populate an unbound column with the Name (ParmName) for the user. I searched the foreign value in the datatable and retrieved the information. I set the Value of the cell in the Datarow. All works well, but does not display. The cell accepts the value...I can even Debug.Print the values to the console. They are there just nothing displaying in DataGridView. Nothing odd about DataGridView. Should be straight forward...

I Fill a DataTable using a SQLDataAdapter then use a BindingSource as my DataGridViews DataSource. My DataGridView contains a ComboBoxColumn named "Status". There are two ways to update the Status column. One, the user can change the value by clicking a cell in the column then the combobox appears and they make their selection. Second, the user can click a button on the form and the Status for all the visible rows are changed to "Exported". I use a stored procedure as my adapters Update command.
