I have a Combobox, set to DropDown style that is bound to a Collection.I want to enable the user to type text in the edit portion of the combo and if the value is not in the list SAVE the data in a collection if it is not already in the collection, of course it wouldn't be if it was not
View 4 RepliesI hope this question is sufficiently clear I'm trying to port an application that I wrote in Access VBA to VB 2010 express and SQL Server. In Access, when the user enters an item in a combobox that is not in the item list an event is fired ("not in list") from which I can set up records in related tables. How can I do the same in VB? I can't see any equivalent to the "not in list" event.
To be more explicit with an example. An address consists of Street, e.g. "23 Acacia Drive", Town, e.g."Wilton" and County, e.g. "Oxfordshire". When entering a new address, the form first requires a street entry in a text box. Next, a Town entry in a combo box which is populated with towns already in the address table. If an existing Town is selected the (previously disabled) County field is automatically filled from that town's County as read from the database. If a new Town is entered the County field is enabled and the user either selects an existing County or adds a new one which is added to the database using similar logic on the not in list event.

I need to to able to save multiple text-boxes and a combo-box to a text file. the thing is, when I go to save, I check out the .txt file manually and its saved all in one line, no spaces. when I go to "read" it with the 2nd part (<-----this is a 2 part Challenge) it even reads all from that one line in the text file. It always needs to be updated w/o redownloading the program, so what I figured was best is to keep a text file on my server that lists all items that should be in the combobox. When you first open the program it gives you a form with either a list box or combo box (not sure which one I want to use yet) and then an add button to add a name to the list. It shows the from where you enter a name and then when you add a name it adds it to a text file that I have saved onto the desktop. It keeps the names on separate lines and I want each line in the text file to be an item in a list box...

Hi, I'm working on a program that reads text entered into a textbox and creates a list of items by separating entries by commas. Everything is working fine, except, because I am using an array to store the items in the list, I have a limited number of entries. This is only a problem because, as it is written currently, each comma counts as an individual entry. Therefore, users can enter ",,," for example, and it would use up 3 places in the array.
I'm looking for a way to check to make sure there is text after the comma before adding an entry. I've attempted to use the .substring command to check the character after, which works until it gets to the last character. Because there is no character after that, it will give an error.

1. Allow the user to enter text into the combo box to type entries contained in the list source.
2. Enable autocomplete to assist the user in selecting entries in the list source, both from dropped down state and non dropped down state.
3. Restrict the user from typing an entry that doesn't exist in the list source.
My requirements are:
1. The ComboBox must run some code after a selection has been made or the user has finished typing an entry (not after the focus has been moved to another control)
2. The code must only run once after the user has made a selection from the combobox or has finished typing an entry
The problem: To achieve the above functionality, I had to run code on numerous event's. Sureley there is a better way, here are the events and the reason for the code:
