I made my first app today. The point is to enter a password and then get into a screen that displays info, and you can edit it by typing in the text box. Is it possible to save the data typed?

How to save a data i entered in vb form into .txt or acces db, for example i have a form, and there is some text box in that form, then i write a text in that TextBox then i save all into txt file or Access DB, and i can open or load that file into my aplication. i use SaveFileDialog but how to make i can chose a file type to save it?

My reasoning for this is I don't want to lose all information typed into the form if they were to click on the "x" to close the form. I want the form to update whenever they type so if they forget to press a "save" button (or better yet not use a save button) the data won't be lost. I can use a textbox change event handler and code to update my dataset on every textbox in the form but it seems tedious.

I'm using the built-in Navigator control for now until I get this figured out, but I'm using a button command instead of the built in navigator button. New to vb.net coming from vba. I am working on a mass balance model which collects a handful of 'user' data (less than 10 records) and then applies various equations to the data and records/reports the resulting values. I think I have a pretty good handle on the basic operators for a single 'user', having pretty extensive vba knowledge. However, I am having difficulty saving the new 'user' data and creating new 'users'. I need to keep the app as simple as possible for deployment to machines with nothing more than 2.0 and I do not really need a database, just a simple method of creating multiple 'users' as objects.
View 5 RepliesI've got a small reminder application I wrote in VB Express 2008. The main app autostarts with Windows and sits in the system tray all the time. Now, I need to save the time (sorta timestamp) it closes/terminates to a file. It works fine when the app is terminated by myself but doesn't when when I shutdown/reboot Windows. The code that saves the timestamp to a file resides in FormClosing event. But for some reason it doesn't fire or the code to save the file doesn't get executed when I shut down/reboot windows.
Is there a way, probably thru' Win API to register my app with Windows, so that windows actually waits for my app to terminate in a sane way after saving the data. I remember of reading about this possibility somewhere, I don't remember now.
I am sharing databinding when opening a detail form a summary form. The data is shared fine. What I don't know is how to save any data that may have changed, or to create a new record.[code]...
View 2 RepliesI would like to commit the data put in a checkedlistbox to the user.config. I have found a way to commit them to my.settings but no matter what Save() method I call, it does not commit the new data (that is not bound to a control, through the propertybindings) to the user.config, either immediately or when I shutdown the application. Which means, when I loop through the settings when the application starts back up, the data is not there to be added back to the checkedlistbox. I have put save methods in the formclosing events as well as when the data is created in the my.settings. using my.mysettings, my.settings and my.settings.default. Thank you in advance for your input.
This first method is a called when a button is pushed. it checks the text and then calls the next method (AddProperty) which should add the property to my.settings and save it to user.config, but my understanding is that it is not written to the file till the applicatoin closes.

View 11 RepliesI'm writing a windows forms project in Visual Studio 2008 - VB, data are stored in SQL database.- I have a date field within Datagrid that could be Null or have a date in it. I had set it to show <none> when it's Null (Null is allowed for this field). The problem that I got is when user would need to delete the date from that date cell within the grid. I'm getting an error immediately after pressing "Delete" to clear the cell value. I had put in a work around - added the code for grid DataError event and assigned DBNull.Value to that cell and user is able to type in <none> for that cell or just press save, but it won't allow to go to the next cell in the grid if you don't save or type <none>. I'm sure that there is a better way handlig situation like that. May be using different event? I wasn't able to find anything else on it.- the other issue in the datagrid - if user fills in 3 cells out of 5 for example and press save while in the 3d cell - it won't save the value in the 3d cell. I also put a work around to check for the values in specific cells before saving but the problem with it - few cells could be Null (and should be Null). I can't check every single cell value and force user to type something in it.

View 2 RepliesI am working on a program in which I allow the user to quickly add strings to a textbox by pressing a key combination, such as ALT+S. Inserting the strings and setting the cursor to the right position works fine. Its just that windows makes an annoying beep as if an error was encountered every time I press the key combination. I have adapted this code from some I found on another website, it never actually worked, so I spent two weeks figuring out how to get it to work. Please take a look at the code below. I was told by the individual that developed itoriginally that the code only adds the rows of data the user entered. In other words,there 5 rows of textboxes. user can enter data into one row or into all 5 rows. If the user enters data into one row of textbox, that's what gets inserted into the db.I made some minor change to the code so that users can tell when a payment is made by check or cash payment.Since I made that change, whether a user enters data into one row or all 5 rows, all 5 rows get inserted into the db.How can I modify this code to ensure only rows entered get inserted?
