Forms :: Save Data To User.config That Is Not Bound?
Sep 23, 2009
I would like to commit the data put in a checkedlistbox to the user.config. I have found a way to commit them to my.settings but no matter what Save() method I call, it does not commit the new data (that is not bound to a control, through the propertybindings) to the user.config, either immediately or when I shutdown the application. Which means, when I loop through the settings when the application starts back up, the data is not there to be added back to the checkedlistbox. I have put save methods in the formclosing events as well as when the data is created in the my.settings. using my.mysettings, my.settings and my.settings.default. Thank you in advance for your input.
This first method is a called when a button is pushed. it checks the text and then calls the next method (AddProperty) which should add the property to my.settings and save it to user.config, but my understanding is that it is not written to the file till the applicatoin closes.

I have a windows form with multiple TextBoxes that are bound to a DataSet of type XML. I load text into the textboxes using DataSet.ReadXML method in the form's load event.
I have another windows forms application which edits the XML contents in that XML file.
How do I force the textBox controls on this form to refresh once the XML datasource file items are changed?

I am working on a program where some application config info is stored in a Userconfig.xml file. I am loading the file as an XMLDataProvider in the XAML via relative URI:
<XmlDataProvider x:Name="UserConfigDataSource" x:Key="UserConfigDataSource" Source="UserConfig.xml" d:IsDataSource="True"/>
I have a number of items throughout bound to elements in the document and an event handler that saves to the XMLDataProvider:
Private Sub SaveConfig(ByVal sender as Object, ByVal e as System.EventArgs)
'TODO: Add event handler implementation here
Dim SavePath As String = UserConfigDataSource.Source.LocalPath.ToString
[Code]....
When this executes I get the error "This operation is not supported for a relative URI". Is there a good way to produce an absolute URI (aside from getting the assembly executing location and trimming the executable filename from the end)? I expected this to be a somewhat simple procedure.

I have created several WPF User Controls. The lowest level item is 'PostItNote.xaml'. Next, I have a 'NotesGroup.xaml' file that has an ItemsControl bound to a List of PostItNotes. Above that, I have a 'ProgrammerControl.xaml' file. Each ProgrammerControl has a grid with four different NotesGroup user controls on it (and each NotesGroup contains 0-many PostItNotes.
Then, I have my main window. It also has an ItemsControl, bound to a list of Programmers.
So, you end up with a high level visual view of a list of programmers, each programmer has four groups of tickets, each group of tickets has many PostItNotes.
The trouble I'm having, is that I want to respond to a mouse click event in my mainWindow's code behind file.
I can add a MouseClick event into my PostItNote.xaml.vb file and that is getting called when the user clicks a PostItNote, and I can re-raise the event; but I can't seem to get the NotesGroup to listen for that event. I'm not sure if that's even the correct approach.
When the user clicks the PostItNote, I'm going to do a bunch of business-logic type stuff that the PostItNote control doesn't have a reference to/doesn't know about it.

I have a window form with a label. On the form I have a dataset, bindingsoure, and tableadaptor (all created by the IDE in response to binding the text property of the label) To fill the datatable, the IDE created this: Me.ClientsTableAdapter.Fill(Me.MyDataSet.Clients) Works fine. The bound field is a phone number, stored in the db as a 10 digit numeric string I need to format this with the standard ()-, and I have a function that will do just that. How can I apply the formatting so the phone number appears in the label properly?

in my form i have 4 textboxes and i want all not to be empty while saving the data.I have put condition in save button, when user presses the save button to save data, to check all the textboxes not to be empty. My question is that, i want to focus to that particular textbox which is empty during saving the data.
For example: i have txt1,txt2,txt3,txt4 as textboxes in the form if txt1 is empty while saving, the focus should switch to txt1 rather user himself have to go there.

I have three tables under one database. I'm using the built-in Navigator control for now until I get this figured out, but I'm using a button command instead of the built in navigator button. I need the "Save" button to save the data in the text fill boxes to save to the corisponding table. I used the drag and drop option to drop rows from each table to the form. See code:
Private
Sub Button1_Click(ByVal
sender As System.Object,
ByVal e

I need my application, save the data for each user ... In short, whenever you start the program, it will do a check of these data.I had thought to save the data in an external XML file, but if this file will be deleted? Or use the registry and save the data using a registry key, as many programs (I think) save the activation (SN) of a program...

New to vb.net coming from vba. I am working on a mass balance model which collects a handful of 'user' data (less than 10 records) and then applies various equations to the data and records/reports the resulting values. I think I have a pretty good handle on the basic operators for a single 'user', having pretty extensive vba knowledge. However, I am having difficulty saving the new 'user' data and creating new 'users'. I need to keep the app as simple as possible for deployment to machines with nothing more than 2.0 and I do not really need a database, just a simple method of creating multiple 'users' as objects.

I have created a program in Visual basic 2010, the program contains many different objects e.g. datagridview, textbox, buttons, graphs etc, which can all be modified by the user. The user can also select a file using 'SaveFileDialog'.
Is there a way to save all the properties associated with each object to this file and later load the program back to exactly the same state it was saved in, after the user has selected saved file using 'LoadFileDialog'? Preferably in binary.
I can do this the hard way in ASC11 format by interrogating objects user editable properties and saving them. I would rather not use this method as it will require a lot of code and any future program changes will require a lot of extra work.

I've got a small reminder application I wrote in VB Express 2008. The main app autostarts with Windows and sits in the system tray all the time. Now, I need to save the time (sorta timestamp) it closes/terminates to a file. It works fine when the app is terminated by myself but doesn't when when I shutdown/reboot Windows. The code that saves the timestamp to a file resides in FormClosing event. But for some reason it doesn't fire or the code to save the file doesn't get executed when I shut down/reboot windows.
Is there a way, probably thru' Win API to register my app with Windows, so that windows actually waits for my app to terminate in a sane way after saving the data. I remember of reading about this possibility somewhere, I don't remember now.

I have never worked with datagridview before. I need to know how to use it so i can use it in my (calculator) program. I would like to know how to make columns, rows, linking the cells in the table/grid to textboxes so values entered into the textboxes (on the calculator) after pressing save goes straight to the table.

I am creating a VB.NET application for a Calculus class as a little side-project. It requires user profiles that are saved locally in the program's main files. I am using 2 separate classes to access the user profiles right now.
The first class is called Config and it is used to manipulate the basic config file which contains lesson document paths, settings, and user profile names.
The second class is called User and it is used to load up user profiles from a profile directory where user data is saved in separate text files.
The Config class retrieves the user names, and user profile text file paths. This text file path is then handed off to a User object that can then load up and interpret the file.
how should I format the config file and user files so they are secure enough that someone can not easily retrieve or manipulate data?
Here is a sample of how I am reading the text files:
Dim userList() As String = {Nothing}
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(configPath + "config.cfg") Then
Using MyReader As New Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser(configPath + "config.cfg")
[Code]....
The problem isn't reading the text file, I am just not sure how to make it secure. I was thinking about first parsing the entire file to translate it from 'encrypted' to text, and then save it as a temporary file which I would pass off to the above code, then delete the file immediately afterward. As for 'encrypting' (is that the right word for this?) the file, I could maybe bit-shift each character using a key that I would save at the beginning of the file.

Is it possible to save into temp data a user made class? I have a class with many structures and each structure contains variables and im trying to add to my program a way to save the data of that class object with its structures and everything is that possible? I tried manually making some sort of save but its taking too long and proving way too hard for me. Is there a way to just convert it into some general object format and save the object? Is that possible can you just save undefined objects without having to create a format manually for that object?

I would like to develop a program to create a report after reviewing a facility's processes (Quality Issues). The reports are to be created using Microsoft Word 2010.
I'm OK with developing the forms and controls to access the form and the user inputs.
What I need guidance on is the best way to save the input information from the user forms (over 100 total) as it relates to that facility, and to retrieve the info in case clarification is needed. Also, each user may have several facilities to review.

I added a datagridview box to my form from the tools menue. I added some columns and would like to place a save button that allows users to save the data they put in those columns. The datagridview is not bound to a database, it is only being used for design reasons and a database is not necessary. What code can I use in the button to save the changes?

I'm using this code:
Dim tfLines() As String = System.IO.File.ReadAllLines("Config.ini")
For Each line As String In tfLines
Dim arr As String() = line.Split("="c)
If arr(0) = "title" Then textbox1.text = arr(1)
Next
To read from a config file that looks like this this:Quotetitle=this is the text Now is the question, how can I save to the config file?Like, replace "this is the text" with the new text in textbox1.text

Is there any way to save a form window state including all of the controls etc that it has on it in their current state? I'm having to write long functions for each control just to save and reload from a config file, so I'm spending more time on user saved settings than on my actual project.
