Refresh Data Bound Controls In Win Forms?
May 20, 2010
I have a windows form with multiple TextBoxes that are bound to a DataSet of type XML. I load text into the textboxes using DataSet.ReadXML method in the form's load event.
I have another windows forms application which edits the XML contents in that XML file.
How do I force the textBox controls on this form to refresh once the XML datasource file items are changed?

I have a few bound data controls on a form. However, there are certain data fields in the same table from which this data is coming from which I would like to be able to access in memory but which is not bound to a control. I have tried looking through the properties of my datanavigator, my dataadapter and my databindingsource and can't seem to find out how to sort this.
In simple terms, I have a data navigator to iterate through various fields in my dataset. I want to be able to access to the contactID of the currently visible / selected contact. The contact ID exists in the data source but I do not want to show it, just access it. How do I do so without issuing a manual SQL call to the database again?

I'm currently working on a data entry application in VB.NET and I'm using data-bound controls by simply dragging the table from the Data Sources window onto the form. It's my first time doing this, but this will save me quite a bit of time since this table has plenty of fieldsAnyway, my problem is that when I enter an invalid value in a textbox and then delete the text it won't let me select other controls or even close the form!
For example, say I have an Age field in the DB, which is an int and I mistakenly type "," on its textbox. Then I decide I actually want to leave that field blank (considering it allows nulls) so I just delete all of the textbox's contents, after doing so, I'm not able to switch focus to another control or close the form.

We are binding most of our text boxes and dropdown boxes to a BINDING NAVIGATOR (with a DATA SOURCE of a DATA TABLE).When the BN is clicked through the text boxes all change immediately. We need to use some non-bound controls as well.First one is 4 radio buttons that when clicked will change a single value in a DATA TABLE.What would be the best method to do this? Should I track when the CURRENTCHANGED event occurs on the BINDING NAVIGATOR.I'm thinking that I could trick this by BINDING the SINGLE FIELD to a HIDDEN TEXTBOX and when that textbox CHANGED event occurs mess with the radio buttons and visa-versa.

We've got a bunch of forms that are using data binding through a binding source control to get text from a textbox into a dataset and then into a database. The problem is that we need to be able to strip trailing spaces before saving the data.
Is there an easy way of doing this without having to go through the dataset manually trimming every string? Ideally everything should update to keep things consistent (e.g. no trailing spaces in the database, dataset or textbox).

I have a vb.net 2010 form with 22 data bound controls from two tables held in a dataset which is navigated by a bindingnavigator. This successfully adds deletes and updates. However what I need is when adding a new record I need some of the fields to be pre filled out. More specifically I have points balance fields etc which could be any value but will normally be 0 on a new customer so I want to initialize them to 0 when adding new records.

I would like to commit the data put in a checkedlistbox to the user.config. I have found a way to commit them to my.settings but no matter what Save() method I call, it does not commit the new data (that is not bound to a control, through the propertybindings) to the user.config, either immediately or when I shutdown the application. Which means, when I loop through the settings when the application starts back up, the data is not there to be added back to the checkedlistbox. I have put save methods in the formclosing events as well as when the data is created in the my.settings. using my.mysettings, my.settings and my.settings.default. Thank you in advance for your input.
This first method is a called when a button is pushed. it checks the text and then calls the next method (AddProperty) which should add the property to my.settings and save it to user.config, but my understanding is that it is not written to the file till the applicatoin closes.

I have a window form with a label. On the form I have a dataset, bindingsoure, and tableadaptor (all created by the IDE in response to binding the text property of the label) To fill the datatable, the IDE created this: Me.ClientsTableAdapter.Fill(Me.MyDataSet.Clients) Works fine. The bound field is a phone number, stored in the db as a 10 digit numeric string I need to format this with the standard ()-, and I have a function that will do just that. How can I apply the formatting so the phone number appears in the label properly?

My environment: VS2008/VB using Data Sources (datasets, binding sources, table adapters) to interact with MS Access 2007 database.
My application: A Master form displaying a 4-level hierarchy of data using listboxes instead of grids. Data source for each listbox is a query containing child table data and a stub (foreign key provided by a cross-reference table) to parent record.
Processing: User double clicks Listbox on the Master form to call a popup form bound to child table (to enable data entry). When popup SAVE is clicked, new data is saved to Child table and a new cross-reference record is created to enable future Parent-Child connections. Changes are posted directly to the underlying Access 2007 database.
Problem: On return to Master form, impacted Listbox does not refresh even though I've done another tableadapter.fill on the control. I have been unsuccessful over the last week in finding ANY way to refresh the set of queries that supply data to the Master form or the form itself. When I close/reopen the Master form, Listbox includes the new record.
Need: a way to refresh the Master table without closing/reopening.

I have a windows form that I bind to a datatable via a binding source. The binding is done in code at run time. Eg;Me.txtCode.DataBindings.Add(New System.Windows.Forms.Binding("Text", bsForm, "ToolCode", True)) (bsForm is the binding source)This works well except if the form control is hidden (I have a couple controls on the form that hold Record ID and Version numbers that the user doesn't need to see). Databinding doesn't seem to work reliably for hidden controls.

I am working on a Data Survey Project and first I have a few questions about the different types of databases, and second, I need help querying my tables that have relationships.
1. I need a database that is stand alone. It is just the back end for the program. Simply to hold all the data an employee gets while out on a job. So would I be better using access, or SQL Express? I have played with both, but I do not want a large redistribution to my user machines. When I compile and produce this app does the SQL Database still work without installing any SQL Technology? Or do they have to go in after they install my app, and install Express?
2.Overview: I suppose depending on the first question regarding the database, it might change this question a bit, but none the less...I have 4 tables( using Access at the moment) I will be generating Reports based on data in the database. I haven't gotten that far yet. *Project* is the table that holds all the details that pertain to the job and client. It has a "one-to-many" relationship to *Survey*. So for one customer there are going to be many Survey Records. *Project Type* also has a 1-to-many back to *Projects*. Parts is kind of an orphan, but is linked to the *Survey* table with a one to many. So there can be many parts for one survey. I wanted this table for a drop down box, so the user could just simply select what hardware he was using instead of typing all the names and parts.
So in VS 2008 using the Designers and related Query tools, how do I constrain the Survey Data to one Customer? I have one form that opens from a button that is "New Project" and then there are all the *project* fields listed, so the user fills out the info and hits accept and that opens a new form called "frmSurvey" I need to add some code to the accept button to check what type of project is selected from the frmNewProject and then run a select query based on that. How do I write query statements in the code section of the form, without using the Visual Database tools?
Ill stop here, and get these questions out of the way first. If I could just get a handle on how to use the data properly with different forms and different controls with my queries, that would be great.

I have to make some automatization on a web server, I use Visual Studio 2005 Visual Basic Windows Console Application. I want to make a load/performance test of the web server, so I open several Internet Explorer instances, and I login the application, that is not a problem. But after that I have a mess on the page and I cannot make any more automatization...The composition of the page after the login is like this: I have the default form, another form and a multiple data window(mdw) controller, which dinamically can switches the forms on this part.
The problem is that I don't know how to access the controls of this mdw forms. I couldn't find much about this mdw controller and I am not an expert.
My code is here:

I don't normally use strongly typed datasets, but I am maintaining an existing application that uses them. This application has a form to edit rows in detail view, so we have the navigator toolstrip with nav buttons on top, including one to add a new row. When this button is clicked, I need to update one of the bound text boxes with a value from the underlyingThe field in question is defined as nvarchar 25 It's almost always integers in this field, but one row has a string. In the dataset, I have a table adapter to go get the max value + 1 where the field is numeric, like this:
SELECT internal_num = CAST(MAX(internal_num) + 1 AS NVARCHAR(25))
FROM dbo.invoice_log
WHERE ISNUMERIC(internal_num) = 1

Been playing around with this and simply can't get it to work
I've got a form and I've created a button called refresh. The button is meant to do exactly that. What happens is that when the form loads, it checks the database for values. If it finds values, it creates a dynamic edit box related to the value.
I open the form and it paints accordingly and as I expect it. If I delete a value from the database then click the refresh button, it should re-draw the form and paint the background grey. The logic definitely works because I trapped the bit of code and it does hit the part where it's meant to set the background grey.
Now, I'm not sure I'm refreshing the form properly because all I'm doing within this sub is calling the form on load event: formLRQuadrantSchedule_Load(Me, New System.EventArgs)
This seems to work logic wise, just not doing what I want. So, I tried this (amongst several other things):
Dim dynTextBox As New TextBox()
Me.Controls.Add(dynTextBox)
With dynTextBox

I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and want to design my Dynamic crystal reports. In vb6 i normally did this via bounding each control of the section1 ,2 or 3 via run time code by giving the name of that control something like
.section3.controls("txtName").text=some value
can I did the same with crystal reports as well in VB.Net if yes than how.?

I have a form with some textboxes on it. The textboxes show values from a table. I have a binding navigator that lets you step through the records in the table and the textboxes update. What I want, is to have a control, say a listbox, that allows you to select a value which will filter the data behind the controls so that you only have one record.
So, for example, say you have a table of contacts. There are textboxes on your form that show name, phone, address etc. You could then have a listbox that showed a list of all the contacts and you could select one, which would in turn the textboxes. The filtering field could be contactID for example.

In an earlier post today [URL].. jmcilhinney in post #9 says,Quote: If you're going to use a DataSet at all then there's no reason not to use a typed DataSet. I would not recommend dragging items from the Data Sources window directly onto a form but that is not a requirement of using a Data Source.
I was wondering what is the down side of dragging items onto the form. I don't mind doing the manual programming, I would just like to know the reason I'm doing it.

I am writing a simple Address Book Application using Typed Dataset & Bound Controls. 1st Form for Entering Addresses 2nd Form for Adding New 'CITY'. To select a city for address I am using a data bound combo box which shows a list of Cities.
While entering with a address if user found the required City Name is not found in the Combo list, he opens a 2nd Form to Add a City name to database & returns to Form1.
Here the expected newly added city doesn't appear in the combo list, so I tried to Refill the underlying table with following code

What would be the most efficient way to find the grid a collection is bound to. Is there a way to use databinding to return the control a collection is bound to? I need a method like GetBoundGrid(myCollection) that returns a datagridview.
This method will be on our EntryFormBase form. This is a 3 panel form consisting of a search area, search results (MainGrid) and a detail section. This base forms handles all the logic for adding, saving and deleting data. (Bad design I know but it's what I inherited.) If I know the current collection I need to determine the grid it is bound to.The app I am currently working on was created using VS2003 before binding sources were available so it is bound old school.

In my application I have bound a datagridview to a SQL2005 bindingsource.I really had to change a database field (more length allowed) and now de DGV displays red exclamation marks and states: 'Colomn 'password' exceeds the MaxLength limit'. (the 'password'-colomn isn't even displayed, but that's a sidenote).I tried different things but can't get rid of the exclamation marks. how I can manage this. I really don't want to create a new DGV, because there a lot of code and stuff involved.

I have added a SQL Server datasource through the wizard. I created my forms which were bound to the dataset. Is it possible to change the datasource and dataset names while updating the dataset the binding controls of the form?
For instance, Server 1 has DB1 and Server 2 has DB2 (DB1 & DB2 store the same information/tables). Is it possible to keep the forms and only update the binding information if I want the forms to use DB2?

I have a query about dynamically added controls to a form. I have a series of buttons which are created and added at run time. I have a two drop down lists and two buttons which are created at design time. Button 1 creates a series of buttons called "Test 1.x" based upon the selection of the two drop down lists. This works fine and am happy with the logic.However.... Button two should remove all the dynamically created buttons from the form. This does not happen. What does happen is that 50% of the buttons are removed starting with the first one. WHen checking the loop it only enters the loop half the amount of times that there are buttons. Very strange. When the loop is run repeatability it will remove all controls. Why will my logic not remove all the dynamically created controls at once? What is wrong with my logic?
I attach two code snippets and the .net file for your consideration.Button method which creates the dynamically created buttons from the two drop down lists and adds to form
