Security - Save User Profile Data Locally And Securely?

Mar 29, 2010

I am creating a VB.NET application for a Calculus class as a little side-project. It requires user profiles that are saved locally in the program's main files. I am using 2 separate classes to access the user profiles right now.

The first class is called Config and it is used to manipulate the basic config file which contains lesson document paths, settings, and user profile names.

The second class is called User and it is used to load up user profiles from a profile directory where user data is saved in separate text files.

The Config class retrieves the user names, and user profile text file paths. This text file path is then handed off to a User object that can then load up and interpret the file.

how should I format the config file and user files so they are secure enough that someone can not easily retrieve or manipulate data?

Here is a sample of how I am reading the text files:

Dim userList() As String = {Nothing}
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(configPath + "config.cfg") Then
Using MyReader As New Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser(configPath + "config.cfg")

[Code]....

The problem isn't reading the text file, I am just not sure how to make it secure. I was thinking about first parsing the entire file to translate it from 'encrypted' to text, and then save it as a temporary file which I would pass off to the above code, then delete the file immediately afterward. As for 'encrypting' (is that the right word for this?) the file, I could maybe bit-shift each character using a key that I would save at the beginning of the file.

Security - Store The Sensitive Data In .net Securely?

Jan 22, 2012

I have a vb.net application that uses my gmail smtp server settings and my password to send me the users feedback through the email, (I don't want to show my email to the users)

The problem is I want to store these data securely in the vb.net application so that It's hard for any hackers/crackers through (reverse engineering or programs like cheat engine) to get my gmail account data.

.net - Securely Storing A Password Locally That Is Used For Web Service?

Apr 27, 2011

I have an application that authenticates against a third party web service by sending a username and password. At the moment I'm typing the password on a winform each time I start the application - but I need it to login automatically.

I'd like to store the username/password somewhat more securely than

Dim username as String = "username"
Dim password as String = "password"

I understand that I probably won't stop a determined hacker with access to my source code, but storing them as plaintext feels wrong. I've found some similar questions on here but none that provide me with an answer I can use.

Edit: The web service isn't mine, it's an API that requires me to login to use.

Store Tabular Data Locally On User's Computer?

Feb 1, 2010

I am currently developing an application that will require each end user to specify a rather large set of tabular data specific to his/her own preferences. Each time the user starts the application, it will load this set of data.

what is the best way to store this data locally on the end user's local machine? Should I use XML, Access mdb, flat text files?

Save And Retrieve A Key / IV Pair Securely?

May 17, 2010

I'm using VB.Net's RijndaelManaged (RM) to encrypt files, using the RM.GenerateKey and RM.GenerateIV methods to generate the Key and IV and encrypting the file using the CryptoStream class. I'm planning on saving this Key and IV to a file and want to make sure I'm doing it the right way. I am combining the IV+Key, and encrypting that with my RSA Public key and writing it out to a file. Then, to decrypt I use the RSA Private key on this file to get the IV+Key, split them up and set RM.Key and RM.IV to these values and run the decryptor.

Is this the best method to accomplish this, or is there a preferred method for saving the IV & Key?

VS 2010 Best Way To Locally Save Settings?

Jul 31, 2011

I'm looking for the best way to locally save settings to an application.I want the settings to "attach" themselves to the executable of the application so that I can send the application to another PC and still have the settings. The purpose of this is for a server that is going to issue an executable to anyone who requests it, the server sends an executable with the callback settings hardcoded into the application (for example IP, port and other settings) so that the application can connect to the server.I can't hardcode the settings in the source code because the application is going to be issued by different servers which of course, will need a different connection setting.I also don't want the settings to be stored on a file or any other "external" resource since then, the settings could be changed which could open security holes to exploit the application. So what I want to do: I want an executable to have some settings attached which will be set by another application. How can I set the settings of one application with another? And how can I efficiently save the settings internally on an application and then copy the file to another PC while still having the settings?

Save Values To Microsoft Sql Database That Are Profile Properties

Jan 16, 2012

I'm attempting to build a website and I would like to save values to my Microsoft sql database that are profile properties and them access them to display lifetime stats or totals from playing my websites games. So I think I'm attempting to use the profile object and I need to save a points total and be able to access that via the current user of the page. You're supposed to then be able to play my simple games and each win or loss should update some of those properties. I've been on this step for weeks on end and have spent over 100 hours not getting a single line of code produced and am running out of options to read, and re-read to attempt this.

I actually tried something like: Dim Userfolder As String = %UserProfile%

I tried with quote marks too, but none seems to do the trick. What I'm missing?

Return Primary Email Address Associated With Logged On User's Current Outlook Profile?

Dec 6, 2009

I know, it's a bit weird asking for a query to tell me my own email address right, I'll explain further...

I'm writing a COM add-in for Outlook 2007. One of the subs generates and sends an email to a particular address and this all works fine. However I have a need to have an option for the sender to be able to include themselves on the recipients list.As more than one person will be running this I cannot just set the sender's email address manually and would prefer to just add a check box on the form to enable this feature.

The only bit I'm stuck on is working out how to find the email address of the person sending the email. I could do it with an AD query against the logged on user but this needs to work for non-domain users also so need another method.

VS 2008 - Sends Data Via Telnet Locally On The PC

May 17, 2009

I have two main troubles. The most important is the telnet one. I have another program which sends data via telnet locally on the PC. It requires a login and optional pass. I can connect and draw data which comes in 77 byte packets.

The problem is, the first packet of data doesn't display until the 2nd one comes in, which for this arrangement could 10s or 24 hours depending on the final user's intended use. This staggered data rx continues until termination of the program. I've used tcpClient.Available() to confirm that my app is seeing the data almost the instant it leaves the other program but for some reason the message isn't passed until the 2nd packet arrives. I'm sure I've probably implemented this in a most cumbersome way so any streamlining.

The second issue (which is contributing in part to the first) is the timer which here uses a freeby snip from a forum somewhere - it screws with the app's menu's controls and program flow. I've tried the VB2008 timer but can't seem to make sense of the best way to use it in this context. I think I've been looking at the screen too long and can't see the obvious.

Save / Load User Inputted Data?

Jul 25, 2010

I have created a program in Visual basic 2010, the program contains many different objects e.g. datagridview, textbox, buttons, graphs etc, which can all be modified by the user. The user can also select a file using 'SaveFileDialog'.

Is there a way to save all the properties associated with each object to this file and later load the program back to exactly the same state it was saved in, after the user has selected saved file using 'LoadFileDialog'? Preferably in binary.

I can do this the hard way in ASC11 format by interrogating objects user editable properties and saving them. I would rather not use this method as it will require a lot of code and any future program changes will require a lot of extra work.

Forms :: Save Data To User.config That Is Not Bound?

Sep 23, 2009

I would like to commit the data put in a checkedlistbox to the user.config. I have found a way to commit them to my.settings but no matter what Save() method I call, it does not commit the new data (that is not bound to a control, through the propertybindings) to the user.config, either immediately or when I shutdown the application. Which means, when I loop through the settings when the application starts back up, the data is not there to be added back to the checkedlistbox. I have put save methods in the formclosing events as well as when the data is created in the my.settings. using my.mysettings, my.settings and my.settings.default. Thank you in advance for your input.

This first method is a called when a button is pushed. it checks the text and then calls the next method (AddProperty) which should add the property to my.settings and save it to user.config, but my understanding is that it is not written to the file till the applicatoin closes.

I tried manually making some sort of save but its taking too long and proving way too hard for me. Is there a way to just convert it into some general object format and save the object? Is that possible can you just save undefined objects without having to create a format manually for that object?
