Save Values To Microsoft Sql Database That Are Profile Properties

Jan 16, 2012

I'm attempting to build a website and I would like to save values to my Microsoft sql database that are profile properties and them access them to display lifetime stats or totals from playing my websites games. So I think I'm attempting to use the profile object and I need to save a points total and be able to access that via the current user of the page. You're supposed to then be able to play my simple games and each win or loss should update some of those properties. I've been on this step for weeks on end and have spent over 100 hours not getting a single line of code produced and am running out of options to read, and re-read to attempt this.

Security - Save User Profile Data Locally And Securely?

Mar 29, 2010

I am creating a VB.NET application for a Calculus class as a little side-project. It requires user profiles that are saved locally in the program's main files. I am using 2 separate classes to access the user profiles right now.

The first class is called Config and it is used to manipulate the basic config file which contains lesson document paths, settings, and user profile names.

The second class is called User and it is used to load up user profiles from a profile directory where user data is saved in separate text files.

The Config class retrieves the user names, and user profile text file paths. This text file path is then handed off to a User object that can then load up and interpret the file.

how should I format the config file and user files so they are secure enough that someone can not easily retrieve or manipulate data?

Here is a sample of how I am reading the text files:

Dim userList() As String = {Nothing}
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(configPath + "config.cfg") Then
Using MyReader As New Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser(configPath + "config.cfg")

[Code]....

The problem isn't reading the text file, I am just not sure how to make it secure. I was thinking about first parsing the entire file to translate it from 'encrypted' to text, and then save it as a temporary file which I would pass off to the above code, then delete the file immediately afterward. As for 'encrypting' (is that the right word for this?) the file, I could maybe bit-shift each character using a key that I would save at the beginning of the file.

Connect To Microsoft Access Database Using "Microsoft DAO 3.6 Object Library"?

May 3, 2012

I have vb .net windows form application that I want to connect to Microsoft access database using "Microsoft DAO 3.6 object library". My problem is that when I go to Project tab -> Add reference -> COM tab, there should have been "Microsoft DAO 3.6 Object Library" on the list, but for some reason It's not on the list. Then I googled, and found out that the location of "DAO360.DLL" is "Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedDAO". After clicking on Browse tab, I browsed to that location, and I guess I added reference on another way. This is the code that I used before for connecting to Access, but for some reason It doesn't work this way on this PC.

I also have a dialog with 2 TextBoxes; I want my program to update the default text/value on (only)form1 labels x, y and z to whatever was put into the textboxes when i press the OK button on the Dialog, so these specified labels show the 'new' value on next startup. Is it even possible or should I save the values to a file which loads the values in the specified labels on startup?

Compare Values In Datagridview With Values In Database Before Inserting Into Database

Dec 15, 2010

I am building VB.NET application that takes data from text files that are exported from a legacy DOS program. These are written to a datatable and displayed in a datagridview. Right now my code simply loops through the datagridview and inserts the data into the database (SQL Server). There is a requirement now that the client number must be checked before the insert to see if it exists in the database. If it does, then the value of one field (tax rate) is checked against the value of the field in the datagridview. If there is a difference, then the rate is to be updated in the database and the data that was in the database is to be written to a history table for audit purposes. If the client number is not there, then we are to do the insert (which is already written). I want to know what is the most elegant and efficient solution for this problem.

I need to compare what is in the database table with what is in the datagridview, update the history table for records that exist, and then insert new records.

What Does "Hidden" Mean - Set These Properties In Code Or Does This Mean That Microsoft Has Not Fully Removed?

I am upgrading from Access 2003 to Access 2007. I found this page on the MSDN library http:[url]....Some of my code uses some of these properties that according to this page are "hidden" in 2007. So exactly what does "hidden" mean? Does this mean I can still set these properties in code or does this mean that Microsoft has not fully removed them but their functionality is dormant in Access 2007?

Filter Database Results (Microsoft Access Database)

Jan 19, 2011

im just starting to work with some database stuff, and ive got data binding done but im a little stuck with filtering. Ive got a test project, which has

-- Combo box (Has items added, with the same names as the items in colunm 3. so it has 'RPG' and 'Puzzle')

Now what im trying to do is when the item in the combobox is changed say to 'RPG' only items in the db which have 'RPG' in the surname column are displayed in the listbox. Been Google'ing and reading but all i can find is examples relating to a dataview and i cant get them to work/adapt to my situation.

Class Properties Not Reflecting Their Changed Values

Nov 14, 2010

I am using a class to track if a user cleared their personal information found within some text boxes on a form. In the button click event to clear the text boxes I am creating a new object to the class and assigning true to one property value. Sounds simple until I try and submit the form with a different button, and create a another object reference that I use in an IF statement to check the property value for true. Every time the statement fails because the value being returned from the getter in my class is false.

VB Classes Best Practice - Give All Properties Values?

Mar 16, 2010

Sorry if this is a bit random, but is it good practice to give all fields of a class a value when the class is instanciated? I'm just wondering if its better practice to have a constuctor that takes no parameters and gives all the fields default values, or whether fields that have values should be assigned and others left alone until required?

Why Do C# Automatic Properties Not Support Default Values

Apr 13, 2010

Looking at the new VB 2010 features, I stumbled upon support for Auto-Implemented Properties.Since I'm working with C#, this seemed quite familiar, but I noticed that VB did add a feature I would love to have in C#: setting a arbitrary default value for the auto-implemented property:I really like the clean usage of auto-properties in C#. This would save us the effort of introducing a backing field and hooking it up to the property everytime we simply need a default value, thereby cluttering up the code unnecessarily.I was wondering why this wasn't introduced in C# as well? What could be the rationale for not doing this? Is a syntax discussion going on, or are there technical limitations to implementing this?

My.Settings: Run-Time Added Properties Don't Save

Oct 23, 2008

I found that there was the Settings.Properties collection as well as the Settings.PropertyValues collection, and hopefully i'm not doing extra work here, but i'm creating both, and then assigning a value to the Settings(PropName).

Defaultly, in my "static" settings (through the IDE designer window and such) I have 9 settings/properties, and at run time when I'm processing, the Settings.Properties.Count doeos indeed equal 9.

Now, in the process of my application I generate some "saved" control properties myself, and actively "add" them to the Settings:

For Each prop As String In Me.Keys
Try
name = Layout & "." & _control.Name & "." & prop

[Code]....

This seems to work fine, and after the repetitive code (cycling through a collection) is finished, the Setting.Properties.Count does indeed equal 79, for the 70 new properties added.

I not only execute a My.Settings.Save() when the application exits, but I know I also have the SaveMySettingsOnExit set to true, but the next time i load up the app, my settings.properties.count is back to 9.
