Store Tabular Data Locally On User's Computer?
Feb 1, 2010
I am currently developing an application that will require each end user to specify a rather large set of tabular data specific to his/her own preferences. Each time the user starts the application, it will load this set of data.
what is the best way to store this data locally on the end user's local machine? Should I use XML, Access mdb, flat text files?

I'm using System.Management.ManagementScope to connect to a remote computer and install an MSI package. This works great if the MSI is located on the remote computer, but it fails if I try to use a network location to run the MSI from. The UNC path is correct because if I manually type it from the remote computer it runs fine. There must be a limitation (security I'm thinking) that prevents things from running via WMI if the exe isn't local to the remote machine.My last hope will be to copy the MSI from the network location, store it locally on the remote computer, then run it - but I'd really rather not have to do that.

I am creating a VB.NET application for a Calculus class as a little side-project. It requires user profiles that are saved locally in the program's main files. I am using 2 separate classes to access the user profiles right now.
The first class is called Config and it is used to manipulate the basic config file which contains lesson document paths, settings, and user profile names.
The second class is called User and it is used to load up user profiles from a profile directory where user data is saved in separate text files.
The Config class retrieves the user names, and user profile text file paths. This text file path is then handed off to a User object that can then load up and interpret the file.
how should I format the config file and user files so they are secure enough that someone can not easily retrieve or manipulate data?
Here is a sample of how I am reading the text files:
Dim userList() As String = {Nothing}
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(configPath + "config.cfg") Then
Using MyReader As New Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser(configPath + "config.cfg")
[Code]....
The problem isn't reading the text file, I am just not sure how to make it secure. I was thinking about first parsing the entire file to translate it from 'encrypted' to text, and then save it as a temporary file which I would pass off to the above code, then delete the file immediately afterward. As for 'encrypting' (is that the right word for this?) the file, I could maybe bit-shift each character using a key that I would save at the beginning of the file.

In my vb.net winforms application using Visual Studio 2010, I'm trying to work something out and my brain just isn't working today. I'm rewriting this application to make it more efficient and trying to minimize the sql calls.
Currently it works like this.User logs in to the app, it loads the main form, where the user can open up different forms to access different client data. Each time a record is loaded in one of these new forms it also loads that specific users permissions from a Sql Server 2005 table.
What I want to do is when my main form loads after the user logs in, is load a public dataset or datatable, or any other suggestion, storing that users permissions so I can access them locally without hitting the sql server every time the user opens a client record.

I am coding a program that will allow the user to input 5 payrolls for Store 1, Store 2, and Store 3. The total of the 5 payrolls are then added together and shown in the respective Store's labels. A total label is also there to add up all the totals into one number. The numbers in the label must be in currency form. My problem is the numbers don't add correctly when I hit calculate. The first two numbers add together, but then after that the number just seems to subtract a random amount.
So far I have this --
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Me.Close()
End Sub

I need to be able to copy and paste data from a spreadsheet that may be an .xls, .xlsx or .csv into my app. Then once the data is pasted in I need to do some parsing and saving to an Access database. So I put a RichTextBox control on my form and put the following code in a command button to get the data into the textbox. Will this work as is to allow me to get to the values? And if so, can someone show me a little snippet of how I can get to the values? And if this approach is wrong, then how do I go about this?

Since some of my users log on as non-administrators, (without administrator priveleges), where would you reccomend I store their programs data files. For example, the program Test Prog would store user data in: [code]The problems is permissions file access when they are not signed on as the administrator and they need read write access to their data files. Also is there a universal system directory name I could use so it would be the same on all users computers, like %Documents% or something?

I would like to develop a program to create a report after reviewing a facility's processes (Quality Issues). The reports are to be created using Microsoft Word 2010.
I'm OK with developing the forms and controls to access the form and the user inputs.
What I need guidance on is the best way to save the input information from the user forms (over 100 total) as it relates to that facility, and to retrieve the info in case clarification is needed. Also, each user may have several facilities to review.

I'm really hoping I can describe this question in an understandable way. This is a puzzle that I have not been able to begin to solve even though I (mostly) understand it. I'm just not sure where to start, and I'm really hoping someone out there can get me headed in the right direction.
I have a LARGE table of data. It describes relationships between objects. Let's say the Y-axis has items numbered 1-1000, and the X-axis has items 1-1000 also. If item #234 on the Y-axis is related to item #791 on X, there will be a mark in the table where the row and column cross. In some industries this is referred to an a Truth Table. One can, at a glance, see how many items in a system relate to each other. The marks in the table can help to identify trends and patterns.Here's some other helpful stuff about the nature of the table:
The full range of the number of relationships (r) for each item on either axis can be 1 <= r <= axisTotal.The X and Y axis will share common items, but each axis will also have items that the other axis does not.Each item will only exist once per axis. It can be on X and Y, but it would only be on each one 1 time.The total number of items on each axis will most likely NOT be equal. Each axis could have from 50 to 1000's of items.
The end result is that this is going to be a report that needs to be printed. We have successfully printed a table that had about 100-150 items on each axis on an 11in X 17in piece of paper. Any more than that and it begins to be so small it's unreadable.
What I am trying to do is split the super large tables into smaller tables, but related points need to stay together. If I grab item 1-100 on X then I would need each item they relate to from Y.I've generated a number of these tables and, while the number of relationships CAN be arbitrary, I have never seen an item relate to all other items. So in real practice the range is more like 1 <= r <= (10% * axisTotal). If an item's relationships exceed this range, it can be split up into multiple tables, but that is not optimal at all.
At the end of the day I think we, and our clients, would be happy if a 1000x1000 item table was split into 8 to 10 printed pages of smaller, related tables.One other thing worth noting, there will be no empty rows or columns in the table. Every item on both the x and y axis will relate to at least 1 item on the opposite axis.

I want to store some information of the form in such a way that if the user quit/exit the application it stores the information. When user runs the application next time the information should be available to him. It also involve the restart of the computer. The application is in vb.net 3.5 framework. The one way that i can think of using flat files and encrypted data, but i can not do this. I do not to store any kind of data on client side and I can not store this information on server side. The problem is of getting client machine information and storing it on server.

I am trying to implement login page using Form Authentication in ASP.net using vb code.I follow the steps in How To Implement Forms-Based Authentication in Your ASP.NET Application by Using Visual Basic .NET. I created a function in login page :
Private Function ValidateUser(ByVal strUsername As String, ByVal strPassword As String) As Boolean
and call it in btnLogIn_Click
Protected Sub btnLogIn_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLogIn.Click[code].....
Things works fine and i can get the username display in label.However,I need to get more user data like UserName, Fullname and RoleCode. Also, i would to display the user's fullname to instead of usename in welcome message. I was told this can be done using FormsAuthenticationTicket method to store addictional user data in the "my user data" section. Do i need to create a user data class to store the user data and then use it in the FormAuthenticationTicket? If yes, how should i do it?

The company require an application that displays coffee usage information for the managers of CostaB Coffee. Sample data has been provided for last years (2011) monthly usage amounts in kilos and is as follows: 400.5, 450, 475.5, 336.5, 457, 325, 220.5, 276, 300, 320.5, 400.5 and 415.
Requirements: The main form will allow the user to enter and store monthly amounts in an appropriate data structure. It will enable the users to calculate the total usage for the 12 month period and average monthly usage. A further requirement for the application is for the users to be able to display the monthly totals in ascending (smallest to highest) and descending (highest to lowest) order of the monthly usage amounts. Utilise appropriate formatting for input/output and include appropriate error trapping and data validation in the application.

I have two main troubles. The most important is the telnet one. I have another program which sends data via telnet locally on the PC. It requires a login and optional pass. I can connect and draw data which comes in 77 byte packets.
The problem is, the first packet of data doesn't display until the 2nd one comes in, which for this arrangement could 10s or 24 hours depending on the final user's intended use. This staggered data rx continues until termination of the program. I've used tcpClient.Available() to confirm that my app is seeing the data almost the instant it leaves the other program but for some reason the message isn't passed until the 2nd packet arrives. I'm sure I've probably implemented this in a most cumbersome way so any streamlining.
The second issue (which is contributing in part to the first) is the timer which here uses a freeby snip from a forum somewhere - it screws with the app's menu's controls and program flow. I've tried the VB2008 timer but can't seem to make sense of the best way to use it in this context. I think I've been looking at the screen too long and can't see the obvious.

Example :- (kinda like flowchart)
1. User types "something" in word, firefox, etc.. ( doesn't matter it should be able to capture value from any app )
2. Application captures keystroke and check if keystroke is "something"
3. If keystoke is "something" then it will transfer or take away "something"
4. Instead of something it will type or write "I just wrote something."

i have a task to create a TCP Server (a program that is listening on its network card interfaces for incoming data stream).I have search on the internet and i found that i can use two methods : Socket or TCPListener class.I have created an example for Socket class, but i wondering how could i test it? I need to check that if another computer in the network send some string data to the listener computer , then this message should be displayed.Here is the example from microsoft that i am using for TCP Server using Socket:
Public Shared Sub Main()
' Data buffer for incoming data.
Dim data = nothingc[code]....
But it does not work because of the PORT setting.If in the TCP Server i have "Dim localEndPoint As New IPEndPoint(ipAddress, 0)" the client crashes, but if i change the port from any (0) to 11000 for example,the client works fine.Do you know why?
Later edit2:Maybe i should have started with this question:Which method is recommended for my scope?asynchronous or synchronous method ?

If the user has accepted the aggreement then call a vb.exe that display the aggrement. I am trying to store confidential encrypted user information for my program on a single computer. I do not want the application to be copied on to another computer and be usable. So I was thinking about storing the information in the Registry but I read that that is a very unsafe location and is bad for more reasons then one. I started storing the information in the programs Settings.config file but I am not sure how to encrypt that information. The only thing I have gotten to work so far is storing the information in a XML file and encrypting that which has worked but I want the information to be more hidden and more secured.
