Apr 18, 2011I'm using System.Management.ManagementScope to connect to a remote computer and install an MSI package. This works great if the MSI is located on the remote computer, but it fails if I try to use a network location to run the MSI from. The UNC path is correct because if I manually type it from the remote computer it runs fine. There must be a limitation (security I'm thinking) that prevents things from running via WMI if the exe isn't local to the remote machine.My last hope will be to copy the MSI from the network location, store it locally on the remote computer, then run it - but I'd really rather not have to do that.

We have the following, which only seems to identify users if they are logged in locally. However, if they're logged in through some other means (such as remote desktop), it doesn't seem to pick those users up.
How can we obtain all the users logged into a machine while excluding those users who only have a process running but aren't logged in (eg, a service is installed by them and might be currently running under their name)?

Jul 18, 2011I'm running an application under an account that is not the account logged-on to the PC.
Within the application I need check if the logged-on user is a member of the Administrators group. Below is the code I'm using. From what I've read, WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent() should return an object associated with the logged-on user. It doesn't, it returns the same information as the call to System.Threading.Thread.CurrentPrincipal. Which is the information associated to the ID running the application, not the logged-on user.

VS 2008 GlobalKeyboardHook - Application That Will Run On A Terminal Similar To A Micros Terminal
Feb 19, 2010I have an application that will run on a terminal similar to a micros terminal. The terminal is already running another vendors app that captures the users logon ID from a swipecard. I need to capture the same logon ID at the same time. This is no problem, I just hook it.
The problem is I have another app which also captures swipes. In development I am running both apps for testing. It appears that when I unhook one app it unhooks both. Rehook and all is fine. As my two apps will never be on the same terminal this is not a problem. What I am concerned about is the vendors app unhooking mine or the other way around.
I would of thought that each app would have it's own ID and that each hook would be independent. I have considered finding a way to determine if a global hook is present and then use some logic to decide on unhooking or not but can't find anything.

Security - Save User Profile Data Locally And Securely?
Mar 29, 2010I am creating a VB.NET application for a Calculus class as a little side-project. It requires user profiles that are saved locally in the program's main files. I am using 2 separate classes to access the user profiles right now.
The first class is called Config and it is used to manipulate the basic config file which contains lesson document paths, settings, and user profile names.
The second class is called User and it is used to load up user profiles from a profile directory where user data is saved in separate text files.
The Config class retrieves the user names, and user profile text file paths. This text file path is then handed off to a User object that can then load up and interpret the file.
how should I format the config file and user files so they are secure enough that someone can not easily retrieve or manipulate data?
Here is a sample of how I am reading the text files:

The problem isn't reading the text file, I am just not sure how to make it secure. I was thinking about first parsing the entire file to translate it from 'encrypted' to text, and then save it as a temporary file which I would pass off to the above code, then delete the file immediately afterward. As for 'encrypting' (is that the right word for this?) the file, I could maybe bit-shift each character using a key that I would save at the beginning of the file.

I've found Environment.UserName which works for the username (as you would expect).However, I need more information - I need the full name of the user (as shown on the Start Menu). It seems this information is stored... somewhere, as Windows is able to use it for things like permissions on file shares.

We have desktops & laptops, for the purpose of this post, we'll say desktops are named DESKTOP then a random 3 digit number (DESKTOP001, DESKTOP002 etc.) and laptops are named LAPTOP then a random 3 digit number (LAPTOP001, LAPTOP002 etc.)
I'm presuming the best way of checking which user uses each workstation would be to check who last logged in to it. doing this for ALL computers in a certain OU (lets say DESKTOP_OU for desktops and LAPTOP_OU for laptops in this example) (either with VB Script or PowerShell I would presume) and to export it to Excel.

It is a Windows Forms application which runs well from Task Scheduler when a user is logged in. However when I try to run it when there is no user logged in, the program starts but it just sits idle.
