Why does my app not load the saved user scope my.settings when it starts by way of the registry run key? This key starts programs after the user login, per microsoft. So why does it not load the saved user settings? The program does start up, but all the areas on the form where saved user scope settings should be, are the default values (mostly empty strings). (The user scope settings are there if I start my program by the desktop shortcut
I've looked, searched, posted to other forums, but can't seem to find an answer.
when building my application I am getting some temporary files shown in Solution Explorer under Miscellaneous Files lie App_Web_YDKG.VB with following code block in that generating error
Protected ReadOnly Property Profile() As System.Web.Profile.DefaultProfile

Return CType(Me.Context.Profile,System.Web.Profile.DefaultProfile)

End Property

I've been searching for a while, but it seems that I can't find an easy way to get the current user profile folder. I've tried "%userprofile%" environment variable, but it didn't worked (or I'm doing something wrong). How can I do it? I want to add the value to an string variable.
I actually tried something like: Dim Userfolder As String = %UserProfile%
I tried with quote marks too, but none seems to do the trick. What I'm missing?
I need to find out the path to the logged in users profile folder in VB.NET.
I know there is one to get the AppData folder but I need only the profile path becuase there is a file I need to read in the root of the profile folder.
Using the Asp.net Membership & Profile Providers: Am I able to retrieve a user profile using their Membership UserID instead of their Username? The reason I ask is because if I have the UserID and not the Username I would have to write the following two lines of code [code]Dim Profile As Profile = Profile.GetProfile("UserID")Will this affect performance? Is my design bad? Am I missing something? I am aware that I can retrieve the current logged in user using the following code: HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name

View 2 RepliesI am creating a VB.NET application for a Calculus class as a little side-project. It requires user profiles that are saved locally in the program's main files. I am using 2 separate classes to access the user profiles right now.
The first class is called Config and it is used to manipulate the basic config file which contains lesson document paths, settings, and user profile names.
The second class is called User and it is used to load up user profiles from a profile directory where user data is saved in separate text files.
The Config class retrieves the user names, and user profile text file paths. This text file path is then handed off to a User object that can then load up and interpret the file.
how should I format the config file and user files so they are secure enough that someone can not easily retrieve or manipulate data?
Here is a sample of how I am reading the text files:
Dim userList() As String = {Nothing}
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(configPath + "config.cfg") Then
Using MyReader As New Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser(configPath + "config.cfg")
[Code]....
The problem isn't reading the text file, I am just not sure how to make it secure. I was thinking about first parsing the entire file to translate it from 'encrypted' to text, and then save it as a temporary file which I would pass off to the above code, then delete the file immediately afterward. As for 'encrypting' (is that the right word for this?) the file, I could maybe bit-shift each character using a key that I would save at the beginning of the file.
I know, it's a bit weird asking for a query to tell me my own email address right, I'll explain further...
I'm writing a COM add-in for Outlook 2007. One of the subs generates and sends an email to a particular address and this all works fine. However I have a need to have an option for the sender to be able to include themselves on the recipients list.As more than one person will be running this I cannot just set the sender's email address manually and would prefer to just add a check box on the form to enable this feature.
The only bit I'm stuck on is working out how to find the email address of the person sending the email. I could do it with an AD query against the logged on user but this needs to work for non-domain users also so need another method.
I thought I postet this yesterday but I can't find my thread so if this is a duplicate please point me at the original one. Background: I need to create a user account and Modify it's registry before the user logs on the first time. Creating the account is done by using the Winnt provider (works great). To create the profile I'm trying to use Process.start to launch a process as the newly created user. With the use of loaduserprofile property the users profile gets created and i can do my regwrites without problem.

My program requires the reading and writing to a file that is shared among all users of a system. Currently I keep this file (an XML configuration file) in the directory that my application is installed to, which is C:Program FilesSomething by default. On Windows 7 (and probably XP too, but I haven't checked), regular users cannot write to this file. While I could probably set permissions as needed in my installation program, I'd rather find a more appropriate place for this file. All users need to read and write to it. Doing some Googling turns up C:ProgramData for Windows 7, but XP doesn't create this folder. Is there a common place on both platforms? Finally, is there an environment variable I can query for it?
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to create an app to launch at start up that will ask you what applications you want launching, or if you want all your favorite app's to start up etc. But before I go any further, I think its crucial to know how to save settings that a user has entered (such as program location and name in this case) so that he/she doesn't have to enter them every time at start up.
So far I have just made this, can anyone tell me how I would get it to save the settings entered?
Code:
Option Explicit On

Dim name As String

View 1 RepliesI have already wrote my own Registration checking software in VB.NET, however I wanted a Special key that I could use in the Registration, and I want to get this from the user, so when they download my software I will with online feature send them a Serial Number, which they will enter when they install the software, I then want to write it to the Registry using the Setup and Deployment project, so that my application can retrieve it every time it is run to check Registration.
View 1 RepliesI developed a windows service project using vb.net and windows service is installed with logon account as admin's user name and password. Target of windows service is to read the pst file path location from windows registry for currently logged user by accessing the following registry key
"HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging SubsystemProfilesOutlook52a407cf2e436a4d8fe252d1d257465501f6700".
The problem is , windows service can able to read the admin pst file path location if admin is logged in windows. When other user logged in windows, service is not able to read currently logged user's pst file path location from registry because of windows service is configured with admin user name and password. so it always reads admin's pst file location.
I have constructed a user control and I would like to be able to save a simple option (very little data) that can be loaded/saved.There could be more than one of these on a form. And if I were to write a small program for my wife, I wouldn't be sure what directory to use to store the data
View 4 RepliesI know similar questions have been asked/answered, but after looking across the net for 2 days I still haven't really seen an answer to the following question.rst, background info: My application starts at windows start as a user checkbox option (by using the run key in the registry.) I don't know if it is usual or not, but when the app auto starts on windows start, no saved user settings show up on the form (but they do when starting the program manually after windows is already running). I've tried both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. In case anyone needs or wants it, my code for accessing the registry is:
Dim Reg As Object
Reg = CreateObject("Wscript.shell")

View 3 RepliesBefore I begin I would like to mention that I am not a noob in VB, it's just I've never had to do anything this complex before. Basically what I want is to have a program that you can load a txt file in, have it copy key words, and paste it in a textbox so I can use it later on. So in this text file, there is a bunch of info, but I am only needing a certain part. Here is an example of a text file (actually a .dat file, but is easily read):
