How can I do it so every time the user loads my application it will automatically (without prompt, or user selecting) upload all the files in a folder i select beforehand and add them into ListBox1

I know how to add an exit button with a prompt. However, I do not have the slightest cluse as to how I can add this same functionality to the window so that if the user clicks the X in the upper right corner, there is a prompt message confirming the user needs to exit.I added a form closing event but getting wrong results, the form closes if I click no and message window does not leave when I click yes to stay.

I am pretty new at VB but am trying to design an application that will allow a user to select from files on his or her PC, hit a '>>' button, and those files will appear in a list on the right side of the button (so I can then have the application upload those files via ftp). I am planning to use a TreeView control to act as a file explorer in the application. I have been unable to find any resources on the internet to populate the tree view with the user's local file structure, and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

I'm working on creating a web application which is going to allow the user to upload a video file to the server. Once the file is uploaded to the server, it's going to be converted to .flv and copied to another folder in the same directory. Since I'm doing this from a web app, I don't want to tie up the app with the conversion process. That is when I figured this might be a good time to try threading the conversion process... what do you think?
Currently, my process logic is this:
1) User presses the upload button.
2) A dummy record is created in the database for the file being uploaded.
3) Folders are created on the server to house the original video file and the converted video file.
4) The original is copied to the server.
5) Once the original is finished being copied, the app converts the original to .flv and saves it in another folder.
6) Information about the conversion process is stored in a .xml file
7) The dummy record is updated with real data
8) There is a redirect to a page that lets the user view the .flv file on the web
I need to define some roles in my program with defined permissions. Let's say the administrator can have access only to certain features. The officer in charge to certain features and the user as well. for example, I have several group boxes and the user can access one of it only. So how i do manage these permissions? What I want do is have the roles already with the defined permissions. When I create the user and assign the role, the user should get the permission automatically.

One of the functions in the program I am writing is to take all of the data entered, compile it into an HTML document, then place that document into a folder.For the past few days, I have just been using a random folder on one of my hard drives to dump the file in, but the problem is that, in my code, I have supplied the folder location as a string ("E:Practice FilesDocuments"), and therein lies the problem. Trying to test my program on a separate system brought the bug to my attention; obviously, this program can only write this file to a location of E:Practice FilesDocuments, and if any other computer that runs this program doesn't have E:Practice FilesDocuments then there is going to be a problem in the program working the way I have intended
So what I would like to do is instead of having it write the file to "E:Practice FilesDocuments," have it write to the default My Documents folder so that the program is no longer specific to my machine only. The problem is, though, I have no clue what the right code is to use. I first tried using
System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location to write the file to the default installation directory. This would have worked, but since this is a VB.NET program, the default installation directory isn't in Program Files and doesn't seem to be meant for users to browse through for their documents, plus it seems that trying to write back to this directory causes some unhanded exceptions and whatnot. I figured it would just be easier to create a folder in My Documents rather than use the install directory (and probably smarter).

View 1 RepliesI'm designing a PC-based app that has a little local database. I'm using VB.NET with SQL Server Compact Edition. The user will only ever have access to one database file, because it's all about storing a user specific data. However I'm thinking of the situation where there could be multiple users that access the PC, each with their own Windows account. So ideally I'd need separate database files for each User.
I'm not sure how to implement this. I was hoping to deploy the 'empty' database as a ClickOnce deployment, but I can't see how I can have a database per user doing this. Also I'm not sure where to store the database files anyway. perhaps in MyDocuments for each user? Or perhaps I need to stick to just one database, but add a 'User' column into every table, so it can hold data for every user. I didn't want to do this though - because I wanted to keep the nice separation between the data offered by physically separate files.
I thought I had my uploads working correctly on Friday, but when I tested the site this morning, it doesn't work right. My uploads are supposed to be going into an uploads/ file and then to a file that corresponds to the ProductID to which that upload is going.
Ex: My Test Product is ProductID 519. I want to upload a document so it should go to uploads/519. When I hover over the uploaded file, it says uploads/519/PhoneList.xls - which is correct. But when I check my Solution Explorer in Visual Studio 2010, the file shows up outside of the 519 file as 519PhoneList.xls

The code updates the files (including the executable, manifest, and a few other files), but on Windows Vista and Windows 7 machines you must run the application as Administrator in order for it to update the files in the application folder.

However this check will be used for various files and its not usable if the FileExists directory stays the same ie searching the same folder and file for different records. I'm trying to select the files and folders inside a folder to zip up, but what it seems to be doing is selecting all the folders up to the folder i've selected and the files in the final folder but not the folders in there and zipping them up. So for example in tbFolder I have the string: "C:Users ombDesktopDeOldMota7" I want to select this folder and zip up the entire contents of this folder, images and all. But whats happening is the following:
Its creating the folder structure up to the folder i want zipped and adding just the files in side this and not the folders. I'm guessing I need to tweak the line:

I need to prompt the user to input a few key/value items.Instead of building a form with a bunch of label + textbox, I figured I could use a simple, unbound grid.

I'm trying to figure out how to prompt a user to enter a captcha. Some programs out there have a little popup with the captcha image and a textbox, the user then enters the characters from the image and the captcha is solved by the user of the application. When I try to request the image directly, it gives me a different image than the one currently in the webbrowser control. Any ideas how I can create the pop up of this captcha image for the user to enter?

I am designing a fairly small application to manage a waiting area for a clinical department. There will be a receptionist who books appointments and updates exisiting appointments to say that a patient has "Arrived". In seperate rooms will be nurses who call patients who have "Arrived" and update the appointment as "In Session" and finally as "Discharged". The appointments are viewed in a flexgrid with nurses across the top and time down the left, patient names are displayed at the relevant times and the cells are shaded a colour to represent the current appointment status ("Booked", "Arrived", "In Session" and "Discharged").
I am using SQL Server as the back-end and Visual Basic 6 (I know) as my front-end.I have been told that there will be 2 or 3 nurses plus the receptionist logged in to the system but I would like to cater for growth.My question is what is the best mechanism to use in order to reflect the status change made by one user on the screens of the other users currently logged in?
I have been thinking about using a timer to refresh the data at a set interval but I do not want to keep hitting the server excessively (although what is considered excessive? we would be talking about a call for data every 60 secs per user). Plus the server could be serving data for many other applications so this is another consideration.Alternatively I have been thinking about sending some kind of message via Winsock to the other users notifying them of data changes as they happen. I don't have a lot of experience with this and am concerned about clients not receiving messages and users seeing old data. I'm running an application under an account that is not the account logged-on to the PC.
Within the application I need check if the logged-on user is a member of the Administrators group. Below is the code I'm using. From what I've read, WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent() should return an object associated with the logged-on user. It doesn't, it returns the same information as the call to System.Threading.Thread.CurrentPrincipal. Which is the information associated to the ID running the application, not the logged-on user.
