I'd like for my application to prompt for user credentials as soon as it starts. The reason for this being that it is an app for our IT Helpdesk that will be run on user's machines, and I need to make sure it is always run with administrator credentials.
Is there a simple way to get the program to prompt for credentials on execution?
Is there any way to use a VB form to supply user credentials to the Runas command in command prompt? I basically need something exactly the same as the GUI for RunAs but just for Internet Explorer (yes I know you can right click and go RunAs but that cant be done in this case). So the user would open this VB form, type their username and password in, hit OK and it would open Internet Explorer with their credentials (they log in under a generic account used by many people).

However this application needs to be run as administrator. Is there a way to get the application to bring up the RunAs prompt as soon as it runs, so the user doesn't have to do a Shift + Right click > Runas?
I working working with Visual Basic 2010 Express. I have a DataGridView that is linked up with a local SQL database I've created. I have it currently where the user can click a button to save their data to the db, but am unsure how to prompt them to save or discard changes if they are closing the program without saving.

Any tips as to the terms to use to search for answers, or links to topics regarding questions similar to mine, would be very appreciated. I have a procedure at the end of my console application that ask the user to either hit enter to end the program, or type s to perform another search. The issue I'm having is no matter what the user types in the program end. What I would like to happen is if the user types s, then the program starts over and lets the user perform another search. The program is procedural and I need to find a way to start back off at the top of the program which ask the user to type a name to search.

I was able to programmatically launch a service on my development server from a workstation using the ServiceController class with no problems.
When I try to programmatically launch the service on my production server from my workstation, I get an access error which means I do not have rights to run the service with my logged in ID on the workstation.
My question is, is there a way to launch the service using different credentials? I do not see anywhere to input these credentials in the ServiceController class.
How can I make my application request elevation privileges on startup? Basically I want the UAC prompt to appear on startup, rather than while the application is running. Currently I have a separate updater application which is launched from the main application, and it requires a UAC prompt to start. Instead, I'd like it to ask before the main application has started - a more streamlined process.

All of these return the account i used to run the application, not the user who is logged on.
I have multiple web applications that I've built for our intranet. I wanted to allow users to not worry about logging in, so these apps pull the currently logged on user when they hit the site. I used this code for this to happen:

This works like a charm, no issues here. The next step is to query Active Directory for that logged in user to pull various information. How I currently have it coded, it works like a charm on the devleopment side (typical because I'm not running IIS).The problem becomes when I publish it to my IIS server (Windows Server 2008 R2 running IIS 7.5), I get error messages that point to the specific line in my code that queries Active Directory. The interesting part is these apps were working great last week. They broke after my server admin did the latest batch of Windows Updates (please note, I am running them using .Net Framework 4.0)Before I had each app setup so that Windows Authentication was Enabled, the other Authentication types were disabled. For providers, Negotiate is #1, NTLM is #2. For Advanced Settings, Extended Protection = Off, and Enable Kernel-mode authentication is checked.

I have made a login dialog that authenticates them ok, but my question is is there any way to make another form run under the credentials typed in on the login form? i.e program loads up the login form, but there after the program uses the credentials supplied in the login form.

I have been programming steady with vb.net for a year now and was all happy about using the List view and email etc from web sites. I even used a reportviewer to pdf to email attach, cool. Now I feel quite lost and realize I have not been using properties, etc. That is my background.
I have a window service that Inherits System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase. While running in debug mode (havent tested compiled), the thread does not see the current user credentials. I need the credentials so I can set up the WebProxy and I would prefer to use the account that service is running under instead of passing the user and pwd as a string.Can someone help me figure out why the code running in the class the inherits from ServiceBase does not have have the credentials of the logged in user?

I'm trying to figure out how to prompt a user to enter a captcha. Some programs out there have a little popup with the captcha image and a textbox, the user then enters the characters from the image and the captcha is solved by the user of the application. When I try to request the image directly, it gives me a different image than the one currently in the webbrowser control. Any ideas how I can create the pop up of this captcha image for the user to enter?

I'm writing the following bits of code for a SaveFile Dialog box in Visual Basic 2010.NET. The code works well as the XLSX file is created and opens in Microsoft Excel. However, the problem that I am having is that if the program overwrites a file, the user is getting two prompts. One prompt is from the program's own SaveFile dialog confirming the choice. The other is from Microsoft Excel asking you the same. It's as if the program is running in the background. Does anyone know how I can write this code to save the file as an Excel file? [Code]

View 9 RepliesI have a program written in VB.net 2003 that are folks run under alternate credentials. Inside the app there is an option to open a UNC path to a network share. We were running Windows XP SP3 and IE6. The code is simple just a call to the explorer.exe with /root,\UNCPath. After installing IE 8 onto the machine this no longer works. Best I can tell the code is still working but now being executed in non interactive mode so nothing opens up. You can however see a new spawned explorer.exe running under the system account for each attempt at opening a UNC Path. Any ideas what IE8 could have done to cause this behavior?

However, I do not have the slightest cluse as to how I can add this same functionality to the window so that if the user clicks the X in the upper right corner, there is a prompt message confirming the user needs to exit.I added a form closing event but getting wrong results, the form closes if I click no and message window does not leave when I click yes to stay.
