Error Handling & Copying Folder Structure?
May 2, 2011
Below is a tiny program I modified from an example Microsoft code tutorial. This program simply copies .flac and .mp3 files from one specified folder to another, and if the file is already there it simply does not copy the file. I would like to make 2 changes to the program:
How would I go about making the error handling work (i.e. not crashing the program when an invalid input is made)?Also, a big change I would like to make would be for it to copy the folder structure and all files in the original folder (At the moment, it only copies files that are directly in the original folder, not files that are in folders inside the original folder).

I develop in VB and often I'm writing long TSQL statements in SSMS but getting them into VB is a bit of a pain. I like SSMS during development because I can change the query / structure and test it when there are problems. Some of them become stored proceduresand some of them I just keep in the code.
I like keeping them in the code because when I have a problem with something, I can GREP my projects directory and find the code that does something (that I've forgotten) or someone asks something about how something works, I can look it up. I've yet to find a GREP for stored procedures. Is there such a thing?I've read in a "best practices" white paper how we're not supposed to concatenate super long strings with & _
[code]...
C# handles these things much better than VB. I'm wondering how I can keep my code together during development and searchable later. I had my hopes up when VS 2010 offered implicit line continuation, that this would help my multi line SQL procedures.Again, I was mistaken. Perhaps I could write it all on one line. I'd be interested in knowing if there's a feature that I am not aware of. Well there are certainly many features which I'm not aware of, but I was referring to "long strings".

I am looking for a way to copy files from one folder to another, I've tried a few examples online but none seem to work. I need one that copies and replaces and one that only copies files which aren't already in the destination folder?

I would like to transfer files from an FTP site to my folder on C drive. For instance, I have an FTP site 169.69.20.100. If I go thru my IE I can see the lsit of files in here. I can simply click on it and IE will ask me if I want to open it or Save it. I want to automatically download them into my folder on my HDD. can this be done thru VB.Net?

I have a problem with the temporary internet files. I know how to locate the folder and all the rest, but I'm going to see what second c 'is in the folder with Explorer I see dozens of files, but when I go to see through code, I see only two files, index.dat and desktop.ini. I thought that the index.dat file is a kind of file that contains the files that I see through explorer, but it seems too light, and still do not know how to copy the files it contains.

I have attached my code. It works in a cetain sense. Basically what this does is change the wallpaper every couple seconds. It sets the registry value for the wallpaper and then refreshes the screen. I also have it converting images from .jpg to .bmp and copying to a folder. The registry gets set, the images get copied to the folder and the wallpaper gets set as a random one(that all works). But it just displays a blank picture. If I manually select the picture from the display properties it doesn't display correctly either. I think the problem lays in the conversion process.

I have an app that requires the user to select a folder, the app runs up/down that folder tree to read/write various files. All that works fine. To select the folder, I support three methods, a FolderBrowserDialog, drag/drop and also a text mechanism where the path can be typed/pasted into a textbox.The issue I have is handling folder shortcuts. Pasting the path is fine and drag/drop is fine because I can sort out what the incoming object is in code. But for folder/shortcut selection by dialog, I've ended up with two buttons, one being the FolderBrowserDialog for folders and the second an OpenFileDialog for shortcuts (set to display only .lnk files).From a users perspective, I think this is quite poor, it also 'looks' plain odd. It forces the user to check what type of folder object they want to use before they can select it. How can I permit folder OR shortcut selection with the same dialog? It seems that my only option is to build my own dialog, which could actually be quite involved, since I would need to replicate the File/Folder dialogs.

I have an issue with the Windows permission system. And every time it tries to do something that needs a windows permission (to be ran as administrator) it fails !
At the moment I was trying to implement an updater which should download a file from an ftp site but because copying a file into one of the program files folder requires a permission I am not able to do this.

I've got an application that takes the files in a folder structure and publishes them to another location. Currently it goes through every folder/file and compares the dates in the source and destination. If the file doesn't exist in the destination, or is older, then it copies it across from the source. It's obviously foil proof, but not as fast as it could be.
Ideally, I'd like to create an audit (or audits) saying what the current state of play is in the destination and compare the source folders/files against that instead.
This of course assumes the destination isn't messed around with manually, but I think that's a fair limitation.
So has anyone got any suggestions for how this audit could work? ie: How I could store data/values, such that on the next run when I look down the source folder/files I could compare it to the audit and see 99% of the files are unchanged, so only send across the X new ones etc?
ps: I don't suppose there's a valid (in Windows) that can tell you the date any file in a folder was created/amended? ie: So rather than checking down 200 files to see their individual dates/times, if I could get a single folder level value saying the date of last update/create, if it hasn't changed since the last run, there's no work to do! There is GetLastWriteTime but this doesn't seem to get updated if you amend/update a file, rather than creating a new one!

The question: better a deep folder structure or less subfolder with thousands files?
The problem: I have a VB.NET program that generates around 2500 XML files per year (circa 100 KB per file).I have to store the files on a file server (Windows 7 or NAS).On the network there are around 30 PCs using that program.I am looking for the best way to plan the structure of the folders on the file server with the goal to have a good human-readable folders structure and at the same time a fast access to the file.In the past I made a similar program with the following structure:
fileserverPC1yearmonthsfile00001.xml
in other words a folder for each PC on the LAN
then a subfolder for the years
then a subfolder for the months[code].....
this solution would produce a clearer folder tree, but more files per folder.I do not know if this could be an issue in term of speed by file accessing with vb.net programs or other third hand application.

I have an object, say Order where if an error occurs, it raises the ErrorOccurred event. If I'm running some code in say, the codebehind for a .aspx page with an public Order registered as WithEvents and I want to check to see if an error has occurred before I run more code, how do I do this? I can't simply check theOrder.ErrorOccurred. Do I have to create a local boolean flag that switches over in the event handler (OnErrorOccurred)?
Example:
Public WithEvents theOrder As New Order
Public Sub DoStuff()
theOrder.DoSomething()
If theOrder.ErrorOccurred Then

After being spoiled for years with C# automatically setting the default namespace for new classes to match my folder structure, I'm wondering if there is any way to get VB.NET to do the same?
I've been aware for awhile that it doesn't do this automatically but I've never really researched alternatives. keep my VB.NET class namespaces in sync with my project folder structures?

I want to copy files with a specific extension (for example .config or .exe). It should create a structure of nested directories, and then insert each file into a specified place in the directory hierarchy. Ideally I would just specify a parent directory for each file and a parent directory for each directory and it would build it.
I need any existing utility or batch file or power-shell script or C#/VB .Net code to perform this activity.
