Create An Audit Of A Folder Structure, And Tell Is/what Has Changed?

Aug 16, 2010

I've got an application that takes the files in a folder structure and publishes them to another location. Currently it goes through every folder/file and compares the dates in the source and destination. If the file doesn't exist in the destination, or is older, then it copies it across from the source. It's obviously foil proof, but not as fast as it could be.

Ideally, I'd like to create an audit (or audits) saying what the current state of play is in the destination and compare the source folders/files against that instead.

This of course assumes the destination isn't messed around with manually, but I think that's a fair limitation.

So has anyone got any suggestions for how this audit could work? ie: How I could store data/values, such that on the next run when I look down the source folder/files I could compare it to the audit and see 99% of the files are unchanged, so only send across the X new ones etc?

ps: I don't suppose there's a valid (in Windows) that can tell you the date any file in a folder was created/amended? ie: So rather than checking down 200 files to see their individual dates/times, if I could get a single folder level value saying the date of last update/create, if it hasn't changed since the last run, there's no work to do! There is GetLastWriteTime but this doesn't seem to get updated if you amend/update a file, rather than creating a new one!

Error Handling & Copying Folder Structure?

May 2, 2011

Below is a tiny program I modified from an example Microsoft code tutorial. This program simply copies .flac and .mp3 files from one specified folder to another, and if the file is already there it simply does not copy the file. I would like to make 2 changes to the program:

How would I go about making the error handling work (i.e. not crashing the program when an invalid input is made)? Also, a big change I would like to make would be for it to copy the folder structure and all files in the original folder (At the moment, it only copies files that are directly in the original folder, not files that are in folders inside the original folder).

Planning Folder Structure For Thousand Files?

Sep 7, 2011

The question: better a deep folder structure or less subfolder with thousands files?

The problem: I have a VB.NET program that generates around 2500 XML files per year (circa 100 KB per file).I have to store the files on a file server (Windows 7 or NAS).On the network there are around 30 PCs using that program.I am looking for the best way to plan the structure of the folders on the file server with the goal to have a good human-readable folders structure and at the same time a fast access to the file.In the past I made a similar program with the following structure:

fileserverPC1yearmonthsfile00001.xml

in other words a folder for each PC on the LAN
then a subfolder for the years
then a subfolder for the months[code].....

this solution would produce a clearer folder tree, but more files per folder.I do not know if this could be an issue in term of speed by file accessing with vb.net programs or other third hand application.

Keeping Class Namespaces In Sync With Folder Structure

Oct 13, 2009

After being spoiled for years with C# automatically setting the default namespace for new classes to match my folder structure, I'm wondering if there is any way to get VB.NET to do the same?

I've been aware for awhile that it doesn't do this automatically but I've never really researched alternatives. keep my VB.NET class namespaces in sync with my project folder structures?

C# - Copy File With Specific Extension With Creating Folder Structure?

Jun 15, 2012

I want to copy files with a specific extension (for example .config or .exe). It should create a structure of nested directories, and then insert each file into a specified place in the directory hierarchy. Ideally I would just specify a parent directory for each file and a parent directory for each directory and it would build it.

I need any existing utility or batch file or power-shell script or C#/VB .Net code to perform this activity.

Creating An Audit Trail

May 4, 2009

I was hoping that the various controls for WinForms in VB.Net 2008 would have a property such as OldValue and NewValue that I could pull from the Change property.

I'm wanting to write a generic code that will save the OldValue, NewValue, name of field and name of table, and date of change directly to a simple Audit table.

Items aren't changed often, but we need to be able to trace the history of changes to certain fields. I've got the code written for saving to the table, but I'm not finding anything that will show me the two values I need.

I get the NewValue from the changed property but how can I locate the OldValue for date/time pickers, text boxes, check boxes are the main items on the forms.

How To Create ' Temporary' Graphics With Text Changed Event

Feb 27, 2011

I'm in an upper level industrial engineering class in which we're learning some entry level VB programming. We're working on building a program to solve the travelling salesmen problem (finding the shortest path through a collection of cities while visiting each only once) and I'm trying to add some 'fancy' to it so I can learn some more skills. The basic program is designed to load a bitmap file of a map into a picture box and a text file with the xy coordinates of any city positions. From there, the user can plot the cities with red squares, draw a random tour through the cities, or tour the cities by always visiting the nearest neighbor not yet visited. The modification I'm working on is a method of pointing out a specific city with a black square by entering the city's number (determined from the coordinate file) into a text box.

Private Sub TxtFindCity_textchanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TxtFindCity.TextChanged
Dim ObjFindCity As Graphics = picShowMap.CreateGraphics
Dim City As Integer

[Code]...

So far, the program works, but I want the black squares (but none of the other graphics) that are created to go away once the text box is cleared. As of now they just hang around on the screen until I refresh the entire image with a 'clear map' sub. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

C# - Which Design Pattern For Activity Logging (Audit Trailing)

Jun 15, 2012

I have a winform which allows people to edit data from a database, to simplify things assume there is a Customer table in database with 3 fields - Name, City, Country. Through winform(s) people can Add/Edit/Delete customers. For each of these actions we need to save:

What the field names are (Name,City,Country in this case)What the field values were before they were modified What the field values are after they are modified. If the action is Add or Delete then 2 and 3 will be the same.I have already implemented this using XMLSerialisation (but not using any of the design patterns) and my XML output looks like this.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<ActivityItem xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<UserID>26</UserID>
<FormTitle>frmCustomer</FormTitle>

[code]....

The solution can handle different areas of the system with different number of fields (i.e the same thing works when you are modifying Products for instance).is there a well defined design pattern to deal with this kind of behavior?

How To Create A Similar Structure

May 28, 2010

I'm trying to create an enumerable class, similar to System.Drawing.Color - My goal is to have places in the code where I can define a variable as the type of my structure, then be presented a list of static values to pick from.I'd also like to use this for a property of a UserControl.I don't know if I'm using the right setup here with the class, structure, etc.I'm just trying to mimic the Drawing.Color class.I'm creating a Public Class called Person.Inside it, I have two Public ReadOnly Properties for Name and Age, their corresponding Members, and a Constructor to create a new Person.Second, I have a Structure called Persons and it has two ReadOnly Properties: Billy and Sally.[code]In my attempt, I get the full freaking .net class library in my intellisense list. Using Drawing.Color, I get a nice pre-defined list of values to pick from.No extra methods. No constructors.Just values.

VB 2008 .suo File Needs To Be Changed/recreated Because A Path Has Changed. All Other Files Are OK

May 5, 2012

I changed my Username on my computer from i.e. "xxxxxx x xxxxx" to "Dennis"

VB 2008 during a compile gave me the following error: Error reading icon 'C:Usersxxxxxx x xxxxxAppDataRoamingMicrosoftVBExpress9.0VSProjectApplication.ico' -- The system cannot find the path specified.

The file "VSProjectApplication.ico" is in 'C:UsersDennisAppDataRoamingMicrosoftVBExpress9.0'

Somewhere in the VB2008 "configuration" files I believe that I need to manually change the old path to the new path.

I found the old path in the ".suo" file. The ".suo" file is not a text file. How can I edit the .suo file, save it so that it will work?
