EventID Error 7030 - Vista & Interact With Desktop .NET Service?
Oct 13, 2008
Is there any work around to this Error: [URl]..I have a Windows Service that needs to interact with the desktop (actually just the Systray). This service is working fine under WinXP, but not under Vista. After reading the article above I find it difficult to comprehend that Microsoft would simply just "do away" with support for "Interact with Desktop" because of a flaw in the OS (this is an OS problem, not a developer issue). I've never heard of any professional organization removing a feature because they can't figure out how to make the feature secure?? I'm hoping this article is just out dated or was not for the released version of Vista.Under Vista Business x64, the option to "Allow service to interact with desktop" is a check box in the Service Properties (Log On) tab, so if this feature isn't available for Vista, when is the option displayed?? But it does appear that the check box does nothing when checked.
I have made a service and cannot get it to interact with the desktop ... i tried the following in my service and checked that the interact with desktop was checked in the service manager.
vb Public Class Service Inherits ServiceHelper.Service frm As New Form1
I have never interacted with Varbiles outside of the projject but now in need of it.I am developing a Windows Service Application that is multi-threaded. There is going to be a set of Global Varibles in the application that contain basic status information such as how many threads are currently running, What clients are currently connected etc.
Now I would like to develop another application as a monitor. This one would be a Windows Forms App and its sole purpose is to display to the user this information so that is can be monitored. Is there an easy way of doing this? If not I don't think I will bother as the Monitor is not essential.
My application needs to be a service (it needs run regardless of whether a user is logged on), but I also need some sort of client control/oversight over what it is doing. What is the optimal way to do this?Write a separate application to communicate with the service application - I see that as best solution in terms of stability, since the applications will be decoupled somewhat Use callbacks on system events in the service application to load UI forms directly from the service application - I see this as being easier to deploy.
I've seen loads of programs that use an icon in the system tray to let you interact with a windows service that is running on your machine but I am curious as to how this works. As I understand it, unless a service marks itself as 'interactive' then it has no way to communicate with the user's desktop and doing so is discouraged by MS (and even causes an alternate desktop to appear temporarily in Server 2008 in some cases). So I want to try and avoid doing this but I cant think how else I would do it, and even if I marked my service as interactive I'm not too sure how I could actually get it to show a notification icon in the system tray.
I assume I would have to use Windows APIs, unless just using the windows forms NotifyIcon class would work. I considered just having the system tray icon in a totally separate application that just communicates with the service via named pipes or TCP etc but I'm pretty sure this isnt how other programs do it because with most of them if you just kill the process that the service is running in then the icon disappears so it must actually be directly running from the service.
I need my application to appear on top of the desktop (and vista sidebar if possible) but under every other application that is opened. It is basically a replacement desktop in a way.
I am creating a desktop application that uses a SQL database to store information about different movies. Instead of having to type in the information I want (Barcode code, DVD ID, Title etc.), I want to use a web service. However, I don't know any web services like this and I am new to trying to implement them. Can anyone suggest a good one and briefly tell me how to implement it into my app?
I have a VB2008 application which can control a windows service i.e. start, stop, pause etc. This runs ok on a Windows XP machine but not on a Win 7 machine (message is - Service error cannot open <service name> service on computer '.') ( if I stop the UAC then it runs ok ). It seems to be a rights issue,
This is my first post in forum. Is it possible to read specific Event ID from remote machine?. In EventLog class there is no option to restrict the return data. WMI allows us to query specific logs, Similarly is any option in VB.NET?
This is a bit of unusual problem that I'm experiencing, but recently one of the users of a production application started reporting errors in the system. These were traced to a 503 Service Unavailable error when making a call to a web service used by the application.
Now here's the odd part, only the one user is affected by this issue. Other users of the application have not reported any errors. When the user logged on to a different machine that worked for another user, they still received the error.
i compile my form with the below code when i run it on vista work fine without any problem but when i try to run in on XP cant run... that happened with any XP machine.[code]when i run my exe to other Vista machines work fine... but on xp NO.
I'm printing pdf files via the below code in a service. In Windows 7 this works really well, In Windows Vista, nothing happens at all? What am I doing wrong?
I have an application that works fine on Windows XP. However I have taken the same application and made some modifications to it to run on vista the app loads fine etc.
the problem stems from trying to change a service in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesDiagnostic Service Host
Start = 4 instead of 3 (which is what it is currently set to)
when the program tries to change it I get a dialog box with the information below. How can I makes the changes to the registry without getting these kinds of errors. I tried to get the Framework configuration tool but it talks about XP and Windows 2000 for VB.Net 2005 so I am not sure what to do... I should mention I have only been programming for a month...
Error details:
"Application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the reuired permission contact your system administrator or use the Microsoft .NET Framework configuration tool. [code]...
I get the following error when I run my vb2010 progrm on windows 7 machine:Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154. It ran fine on vista. there is no option on the compile to target x86. It is related to an active x flex grid
Ive been trying to get my app to work on a Vista 64 bit machine, i have XP 32 and Vista 32 bit machines. When my friend trys to run he gets this error. "Cannot process request because the process (5252) has exited".
I have a program that writes unhandled exception detail to a log file stored in the same directory as the program itself. I am wondering how I can have keep the file in the same location, and not have to worry about a file write access. With Vistas User Access Control enabled, the file is not accessible unless the program is run as an administrator, which I don't need it to be for anything else. The file does not exist all of the time, it only exists after an error occurs. Users are encouraged to email the file to me and then delete the file. Thus the file should only exist if their is a error that the user has not emailed. I really want to keep it in the same directory as the program itself, or within a subdirectory of the programs directory, since the portable version is exactly the same program executable and I would like to keep it that way. I am not sure how to go about setting the file security, set it when I create the file if the file doesn't exist, prompting for Administrator privileges to create it with the security. I was also thinking that I could just set the entire folder containing the program executable when it is installed, and then it would be able to create the file without having to have administrator privileges.
I am using following code to send emails. This works best in Windows XP but fails in Vista, while with same Vista, I can send mails using Windows Mail. what change I should make to make application work with Windows.
I have an VB.NET 2005 application installed on my Windows 2003 Server.I try to access that application for other computer on my network. Read below:I get this error when running a remote VB.NET application.
System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
I had the error on my computer running Windows XP. I am use to that, so I went in the FrameWork .NET 2.0 and set the security to FullTrust and the error disapeared. Now I have the same error on my computer that is running Windows Vista and when I go do the same security changes to FullTrust, it does not work. I still have the error showing. Is there some other configuration to do on a Vista machine to be able to run a remote VB.NET application ?
I have created a very basic program in VB that will run a batch file that writes a reg file to the registry (see code below). In XP it works fine with no problems. However, with vista it comes up with a security error and does not run the batch file. The error it says is:
I have a button click on my form, when I click it I receive the following error; The folder Desktop cannot be used Choose another folder
OK
When I click OK,
it opens My Documents, My computer then I can browse through the drives..
We have restriction in my work place and cant open the desktop, therefore, I wish to change the code to go straight to my computer where all the drives can be seen..
Code: Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click Dim fbd As New FolderBrowserDialog
I have an old app, a VB5 front end with access 97 databases all works Ok using the ...program files... folders in XP but I now have a user on Vista and we have problems opening up, and I am braced for problems saving and closing down, if we ever get there.
I sent him a c# applet which found the users folder using string Dpath = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.LocalApplicationData);
I have moved the data and all settings files to a folder C:Users[Username]AppDataLocal[My app Name][My app data Path]
The start up routine checks a settings file uses the path in the settings to re-attach the front end database to a backend database, test to see if the database uses replication and set the default data path for the rest of the app. we are failing somewhere in here I am sure. I have checked and there are no updateable files in program files
Have I got the wrong path or is there something else I should be looking for?
I have an vs2008 version of the app which is using a similar location but a SQL server database- no problems
I have a VB 2008 application that connects to a MySQL database via ODBC using the MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver. Works fine on XP Pro and Vista Business (both 32 bit), but on my new Vista Business 64 Bit, I get the following error when trying to connect:
[Code]...
I can test the ODBC driver from Data Sources and it works just fine. Here is my DSN:
I have a VB.net applications that runs on XP and creates a directory and creates an Excell workbook and saves it. But when I do the same in Vista , when it tries to create a directory to save the excel workbook, it gives me an error that the directory does not exist. If I create the directory manually, it still gives me the same error. Is there a COM call for office 2007 on Vista other than worksheet.SaveAs(FileName:=path). All else works on Vista apart from creating a directory and Saving Excell Worksheet.
Public Function createDirectory(ByVal path As String) As String Dim new_path As String Try
I have a VB6 app using MS Access2003 database ODBC connection in Windows Server 2008my connection string is simple ODBC-- DSN=hotel -- using Microsoft Access Driver (.mdbusing admin user - i can run all forms on windows server 2003 successfullyusing other users - i get "permission denied error 70"I have 2 problems,1- cannot use software in terminalservices using remote desktop to server @Windows Server 2008i have 10 machines connected using Remote desktopfor a limited user, >> permission deniedif i cange the limited user to admin >> things work but ONLY FOR THAT USER!ALL OTHER USERS THEN HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE SOFTWARE, some exit, some cannot fetch data, etc.
I am been working on an a small app that has a Forms.Webbrowser control that navigates to a Adobe Flash program. I have developed the app on Vista 32bit platform and have had no problems. I have sent the app to a couple of people to test out and one is using Vista 64bit and is running into a problem. I know the webbrowser control just uses the underlying base framework of IE. The problem on the 64 bit machine is when the site is navigated to it says that it needs to have Flash installed. When the user goes to Adobe's site it says they need to use a 32bit browser.
As stated on Adobe site here:[URL] the Flash player need to be in a 32 bit browser. What options do I have to be able fix this problem? Is there another control that I can use that would be the same in a 32bit platform and 64bit platform? Besides navigating to the Flash program, the browser also goes to standard web pages.
