EventID Error 7030 - Vista & Interact With Desktop .NET Service?
Oct 13, 2008Is there any work around to this Error: [URl]..I have a Windows Service that needs to interact with the desktop (actually just the Systray). This service is working fine under WinXP, but not under Vista. After reading the article above I find it difficult to comprehend that Microsoft would simply just "do away" with support for "Interact with Desktop" because of a flaw in the OS (this is an OS problem, not a developer issue). I've never heard of any professional organization removing a feature because they can't figure out how to make the feature secure?? I'm hoping this article is just out dated or was not for the released version of Vista.Under Vista Business x64, the option to "Allow service to interact with desktop" is a check box in the Service Properties (Log On) tab, so if this feature isn't available for Vista, when is the option displayed?? But it does appear that the check box does nothing when checked.

Now it originally was meant for deployment on a webserver.That is working, so, so far so good.My question now is: Is it possible to deploy it as a desktop-application, too? That is to say the installer installs some kind of server, plus the web application, configures the server to run this application on a localhost URL, and then creates a link in the start menu/desktop, where it opens that url (website, the application) on localhost in a web browser?
I think it should be possible, though the server wouldn't be IIS, because this is a windows component which can't be separately installed. Is there anything like this already out there The nonplusultra would be that it only starts the server when you click on the shortcut.
PHP + SQL Server - Desktop Application Can't Be Replaced By A Web Application?
Jun 22, 2009the system is going to have two front-ends - one web application and one desktop application.The desktop application is going to be coded using VB.NET, and the web application in PHP. There's really no reason why the desktop application can't be replaced by a web application as well - except that one of the programmers seem to really want to code it in VB...However none of us have experience working with either of these pairs .
P.S. hosting service will be gotten from some provider and not be on the client's own server.

May 28, 2009Basically back in VB6 days, I created several VB6 apps with Access as the backend database. I'd package my Access db file with the application setup, which copied it on to a shared network drive, and then different computers on the LAN could use the same backend database file, and that worked just fine. With SQL and VB .Net, I've done work with a SQL database hosted on a remote server, so you can basically build your query string easily and anyone can connect to it from anywhere, and it works just fine.However, what I'd like to do is have a local SQL express database as the backend for a VB .Net application and make a setup program that can install it in a way that it could be shared on a Local area network, without the user who is installing the application do anything.
I know about building a connection string with the local machine name, but I don't really have any experience with including an actual MDF file with the application. Does anyone know how it works, and is it a better approach? Does it work similar to placing an access file in a shared unc path?I know that ClickOnce (which is awesome) can install SQL express easily on a user's machine. However, the key is that I want SQL express to be installed only on the machine that is going to be the database server in a LAN enviornment, and not on every machine, unless it is neccesseary. And then how does your VB app know how to build the connection string to access the database from any machine on the local share?

Would run on windows mobile 6 I would like to have both these versions store and read data from a database that can be stored centrally either on a webserver or somewhere on the LAN.

Database - Design And Deploy A Data Driven Desktop Application?
Jun 28, 2011I am designing a desktop application that will be driven by local data. I am trying to determine the best way to accomplish this. The database would contain about 10-12 tables if I use a database and I would imagine no more than 10000 records in any one table (but honestly 99% of users would not have more than 1000 records). I am thinking about using SQL Server Compact.
Is this a good solution? I can certainly include this in my installation, but I am just wondering if anyone knows of a better solution? If this is the best solution, how would you suggest that I create the tables upon deployment? Should I just run "queries" with create table statements in them from my vb application or include a database file or what?

Aug 3, 2011At user login, launch an app I have created. This app opens a web site in a webbrowser control, logs the user in to the web site, and parses links from the resulting web page. These links are links to launch citrix sessions on another farm.
Create another app that appears on the start menu for the logged in user. User clicks on this app, it communicates with the launch app to basically click the href associated with the citrix app within the webbrowser control. Then this app will go away...
I have already coded the first app and figured out how to click links within the webbrowser control. What I can't figure out is how to go about implementing the second app, that runs as a separate app, but communicates with the first app to do its business. I see a plethora of options such as MFC, AppDomains, RPC, and so on. My question is which is the best practice to have one app interact with another and have the other app take actions based on that interaction? I prefer to stick completely to vb.net.
A good example of how I would like this to work - a web browser (IE, FF, whatever) is open on the desktop, user clicks a link in an email, link opens in running browser. An action in the mail client causes action in the browser.

Oct 29, 2010This is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?

What I want to do: Get the html of a certain webpage (Lets say in this case url...this html within my wpf application, so that you can see the content of the page you requested. Then I want to be able to trigger events on the html that has been loaded from the URL. Like I want you to be able to click on a certain node in the HTML and I want to be able to link this node to a certain value. Basically a crawler application that let's you request a page, see the page in a control and allows you to click in the loaded HTML and link values to predefined values you set. So basically I want to be able to get a webpage displayed within my application and be able to trigger events on the html (For example a click on the html which would need me to know on what node you clicked in the html, or for example be able to edit the html by clicking in it).

Apr 13, 2009i 'm develloping an application that uses a sql server database, in my computer where i'm programming i installed the sql server in the same language of the OS, in the tests of the application everything worked fine. Biut after migrating the db to the main server, the values went crazy.. After some research and tests, i saw that the language of the sql server was in english and that was the problem.
My language settings says that the decimal separator is "," and the agrupment digit it's ".", and the sql server works in the other way "." is the decimal separator and the "," it's the agrupment digit. In my code i was using the CDEC to pass the values to the DB, to solve this i removed the cdec and send the parameter as a string (So if i send 2,33 to DB with CDEC i get 233 if i send the 2,33 string i get 2.33). This works for now, but i don't know if in the future i'll have problems...
