File I/O And Registry :: Pasing A Sentence With .Substring ?

Nov 16, 2008

I am working on creating a program for my Visual Basic Programming class, and I have hit a snag. My problem is that we have a text file that lists the countries of the world, along with their population, area, capitals, etc. Well, each country is listed as one line, with all pertinent information following on that line. Some information is unneeded, like the Capital or the Continent. I have set up my variables for each piece of the line, and am planning on using a Do While (sr.Peek <> -1) Loop to read through the list.

My problem arises with .SubString. I can get it to parse the first word just fine by saying

Code:
variablename.Substring(0, n)
n being my variable for finding the .indexof the blank space.

After the first word, I can't seem to get .substring to parse any words or data from the file after the first word.

Code:
Option Strict On

Public Class Form1

Pasing GridView Pointers To Other Forms

Feb 3, 2012

i am new to commercial programing (and this site) I am currently studding Computer science at a university and i have hit my First roadblock.I am currently developing an application that displays a Table on one Form1 in a Read-Only format and a second Form2 which will only be displayed if after selecting a row on the Grid-View of Form1 you press an Edit button. We are doing that to avoid the User editing the DB in large. The Form2 is populated by a details view of the Table with no controls to change row on the table. What i am trying to accomplish is passing the information of which row was selected in Form1 to Form2 thus making it the current row and subsequently the only one been edited. Currently most things work but as soon as Form2 shows (Form2.show()) it will only display the first row of the database.I want to know if there is a way to "sync" the two indexes.

C# - Prepend A Substring If The Source String Does Not Begin With The Same Substring?

Oct 10, 2011

I'm trying to create a valid RegEx replacement pattern for correctly formatting specific .XML file names. Specifically, if a file name does not begin with a prefix, let's say, ACE_. If the XML file name and extension does not begin with ACE_, prepend the string ACE_ to the file name. For example, if my input source string is the following:

Widgets.xml

I would like to execute a single RegEx Replacement that would result in the string being:

ACE_Widgets.xml.

Conversely, if the string already begins with ACE_, I would like it to remain unchanged. Also, how can I include the pattern ".xml" to ensure that the string pattern for the file name and extension ends with ".xml" in the same matching pattern for the RegEx Replacement pattern? As for the match, I have some luck with the following:

^ACE_{1}[dD]+

Which indicates there is a match for the pattern if the input string is ACE_Widgets.xml and no match if the string is Widgets.xml
The RegEx pattern would suffice, but if you need to know the language in which I'd like to use the replacement pattern is in .NET 4.0 in either C# or VB.NET.

The following posting is close to what Im looking for, but with the inclusion of the *ix directory path prefix, and the use of preg_replace() in PHP, I'm having a bit of a struggle getting it to work with what I need to do:

Regular Expression: How to replace a string that does NOT start with something?

I have a Richtextbox where I select a number after a : with this code; For Each line As String In Richtextbox1.Lines Dim equalsPos As Integer = line.IndexOf(":") + 1 txtFound.AppendText(line.Substring(equalsPos, line.Length - equalsPos)) Next This is working ok, but the whole line.length is appended for number2. The line ex. Some text:my number some text-my number2. I want my number appended to txtFound, and my number2 appended to txtFound2. With my code only number2 can be appended correct.

File I/O And Registry :: Reading Multiple Keys From The Registry?

Aug 27, 2008

I am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.

I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.

I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.

In this key:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.

My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.

Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?

I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.

File I/O And Registry :: Binary File Primer - Read The Nth Record Without Reading The Whole File?

May 4, 2009

I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.

Here's what I know:
1. how to open a new file
2. how to specify the record length
3. how to close the file

Some specific questions:

Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?

Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?

File I/O And Registry :: File System Object Does Not Allow Spaces In File Names

Feb 3, 2010

I am working on a VB Console Application that takes an Autocad drawing type DWG and converts it to a PDF using a shell command that calls a third party application. In this case, acmecadconverter.exe from www.dwgtool.com. Then the PDF that is created needs a unique watermark, so I call a second application for that called pdftk.exe from www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/.

Everything works as intended, except when I try file names that contain spaces. The file system object does not tolerate spaces in the drawing file name. For instance, the following command gives me a system.io.filenotfoundexception...

My.Computer.FileSystem.RenameFile("Test Flowchart1.dwg", "Test~Flowchart1.dwg")

It's the same problem for all of my File System commands. Either file not found or invalid arguments.

The complete script I'm using is here:

Code:
Sub Main()
Dim arrArgs() As String = Command.Split(","), _
i As Integer, folderPath As String, myPart As String, _
