Parsing Lines Of A File And Replacing A Substring?

View 2 RepliesSorry if this seems like I haven't searched, however I have. Maybe I'm not understanding something or maybe I just haven't found what I need. Anyway my question is this. How would I find multiple strings in a text file and replace them? So far I've been able to find out how to replace a single string with:
[Code]...
I've got a string which could or could not contain the substring "/announce". I would like to replace this part of the string with "/scrape" if its found...so far nothing tricky. But heres the thing: I only want to replace it if the '/' in it is the last occurring in the string. Heres what I mean:
Heres a scenario where I want the replace to happen:
MyStringWithRandomText/announce?x=19
would become:
MyStringWithRandomText/scrape?x=19
And heres another scenario where the '/' in announce is not the last '/' occuring in the string, so I dont want to replace it:
MyStringWithRandomText/announce/foo?x=19
I hope that made sense. Not sure if there is a way to handle this by only using RegEx
I have an issue here, lets say I have this string: "Lets create a database called 'farfromwest' and then host it" And I want to change the substring that is inside the ' ' with "nearwest", how can I do it? "Lets create a database called 'nearwest' and then host it" Remember, I want to change what is inside ' ', this means it could be any word, not just the one of the example!
[Code]...
This is an example of the text I want to modify:
0110
0001
0001
1000
[Code]....
Here, I want to replace two-line digits in bold(0110 0001) with a different sequence as the program scans the text line by line. But two things complicate the task:
1. the comma lines should be ignored, but
2. they also should stay intact after changing the digits.
So in my form i have the user input a bunch of data that gets written to a listbox. Like so Pre_Study_Listbox.Items.Add("Team Members are: "). I then save the listbox to a .txt file and they can later load the .txt file back to the listbox. All this works great. But now i need to reverse the order of textbox to listbox and put the information back into the textbox fields from the listbox. So. The parsing character is ":" I need to read each line of the listbox and at the ":" take the rest in put it to the text box. I am not familiar with the parsing command
View 2 RepliesI am trying to make a script to spit command lines to a bat file to compress a bunch of files singly and then delete the original ones. I am sure that is easy to most of you, but I living a ____ trying to do this. A have a file list like this one belo, which was created with a command -- Dir /b /s /a-D N: > filelist.txt

read lines in a file, split the lines and spit the result to another file
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to create a valid RegEx replacement pattern for correctly formatting specific .XML file names. Specifically, if a file name does not begin with a prefix, let's say, ACE_. If the XML file name and extension does not begin with ACE_, prepend the string ACE_ to the file name.For example, if my input source string is the following:
Widgets.xml
I would like to execute a single RegEx Replacement that would result in the string being:
ACE_Widgets.xml.
Conversely, if the string already begins with ACE_, I would like it to remain unchanged. Also,how can I include the pattern ".xml" to ensure that the string pattern for the file name and extension ends with ".xml" in the same matching pattern for the RegEx Replacement pattern? As for the match, I have some luck with the following:
^ACE_{1}[dD]+
Which indicates there is a match for the pattern if the input string is ACE_Widgets.xml and no match if the string is Widgets.xml
The RegEx pattern would suffice, but if you need to know the language in which I'd like to use the replacement pattern is in .NET 4.0 in either C# or VB.NET.
The following posting is close to what Im looking for, but with the inclusion of the *ix directory path prefix, and the use of preg_replace() in PHP, I'm having a bit of a struggle getting it to work with what I need to do:
Regular Expression: How to replace a string that does NOT start with something?
How will I select a substring with 2 criteria? I have a Richtextbox where I select a number after a : with this code; For Each line As String In Richtextbox1.Lines Dim equalsPos As Integer = line.IndexOf(":") + 1 txtFound.AppendText(line.Substring(equalsPos, line.Length - equalsPos)) Next This is working ok, but the whole line.length is appended for number2. The line ex. Some text:my number some text-my number2. I want my number appended to txtFound, and my number2 appended to txtFound2. With my code only number2 can be appended correct.
View 4 RepliesI have written a simple script to get a bunch of lines from a text file (they will be filenames eventually) which are split by new lines and puts each one into an array..
Dim ary() As String
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists("C:MenuFiles.txt") Then
[code]....
The only thing I can do for now is either use the substring function to remove the first character from all array values after 0 but I don't like that because it's messy and what if the split "works" as I want it to one one of the lines and knocks of the first character when I don't want it to.
I have created a program which opens a file, eliminates the delimiters and save the info into another file.What I need is to reach a specific numbers of characters in the string (which is between 14 and 19 and tells us the date) and to compare it with the current date. If the date is equal or later than today's date , save all lines in to another file. Pease help me to walk through the string and get the substring and finally compare with the current date.

friend of mine has no HTML knowledge so I'm attempting to write a program that replaces certain parts of a html file to suit his needs.I've edited the HTML file and marked certain parts with "tags" like this:
#IMAGEURL1# I have a textbox where he can copy + paste an image URL and hopefully the #IMAGEURL1# is replaced with the contents of the textbox.
So can someone please enlighten me to-as how to open a HTML file (there's no textbox to display the contents just yet, I'll add one if needed), find the specified text and then replace it with whats in a textbox.

View 11 RepliesI am working on creating a program for my Visual Basic Programming class, and I have hit a snag. My problem is that we have a text file that lists the countries of the world, along with their population, area, capitals, etc. Well, each country is listed as one line, with all pertinent information following on that line. Some information is unneeded, like the Capital or the Continent. I have set up my variables for each piece of the line, and am planning on using a Do While (sr.Peek <> -1) Loop to read through the list.
My problem arises with .SubString. I can get it to parse the first word just fine by saying
Code:
variablename.Substring(0, n)
n being my variable for finding the .indexof the blank space.
After the first word, I can't seem to get .substring to parse any words or data from the file after the first word.
Code:

How to substring it step by step load to gridview?
I have made the first part of this application it read the file and splits it up, injects into SQL where it pulled and edited. Now i need to create the part of the application that Exports the data back to the orignal layout. I have used Substring to read the infomation as it was the only simple way i could think of.
Example of the layout is below.

I am loading a dataset with a csv file.I remove the quotes around each field in the csv file and I am splitting each field wherever there is a comma:Dim fields() As String = lines(i).Split(","c) The problem is that some of the fields have a comma in the csv file (surrounded by double quotes).How do I replace those commas with a space to avoid problems when loading the dataset?
View 18 RepliesI decided to use XML to handle some of my configuration chores. My XML file looks something like this:
<catagories>
<catagory path= "C: empwyoming" name="Wyoming">
<URL Filename="Picture1.jpg">http://www.domain1.com/pic.jpg</URL>
<URL Filename="Picture2.jpg">http://www.domain2.com/pic.jpg</URL>
[code]....
I'm wanting to manage this list in my program. Currently, I have written code to read the catagories into a combo box, and once a catagory is chosen, I can read the children URL nodes into a listview. I want to allow editing and re-arranging of the URLs in the listview, and I'll have no problems with that. So my question is, what is the best way to dump the listview back to the xml file? You should consider the contents of the listview as a replacement for ALL of the existing children in the XML file.
So i have an .ini file where one of the lines is for the output of a file. i need to substitute the current output in the file with a filepath that is stored in my vb app (named filepath). so i need a snippet that will open the ini file, find the correct line, and place my variable in there. ill paste in what the ini file looks like
[PDF Printer]
output=C:\Users\bobbyt\Desktop\test.pdf

its not code so i suppose i shouldn't place tags around it. so that first line needs to have my new filepath in it.
I would like to be able to parse vb.net code files, so I can examine the collection of Subs, Functions (and their contents, including comments), private variables, etc. I can be open the actual source code files. So for example, if I have:

I have a text file containing lines of data (File 1). I need to delete all the lines in another text file (File 2), which are found in file 1.So I could read file 2 line by line. And then once the line has been read, read file 1 line by line to search for a match. But that's going to be painfully slow.Or I could read file 2 into memory. And then read file 1 line by line and REPLACE the lines in file 2 with nothing, therefore deleting them. File 2 could be 100 mb, so I'm not sure about reading it all into memory.

View 2 RepliesWhat I basically have is a small game which I want to count wins/loss/ties. I have no problem with the game aspect but need to know how I can replace a string in a csv file. IE: If Jim wins the game, his 5 needs to be turned to a 6. After googling quite a while I came across the replace() function, but it doesn't actually rewrite it back to the text file

The issue I have, is if I try to use any sort of IO function after this (WriteAllLines, streamwriter, etc) - I get a process is being used and can't touch the file (because its being read).Must I somehow create a new file with a copy of everything including the replaced string?
I am using the following code, but cannot get this to work. I have got it to work if the replacement is just of one word. So if the word test is replaced by mouse and the only thing in the file is the word test, it works.
How can I replace like this:
