Forms :: Create Separate Parts/winforms Of The Same Application?
Sep 19, 2011
is it a bad idea to create separate parts/winforms of the same application (using the same SQL Server DB) in different executable files. For example for a School IS: A Receptionist App, A Teacher App, A Principal App and so on.

I need to write an application for receiving data (ascii characters) from microcontroller through the serial port in three separate parts. I've created three RichTextBoxes, but I do not know which commands I need to type. In first textbox I need to receive one byte... next six bytes need to be placed in second text box, and finally last seven bytes need to be placed in third textbox.

I am deploying a VB.net 2010 winforms application, and when I install it on the client's machine, the install process also installs an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. The application connects to a central SQL database on the server. To install, I am using the "Publish" option in VS 2010. Why does it do that? There should be no need for a local instance of SQL Express. Is there a way to avoid installing SQL 2005 Express (I know it is free, but I would rather not have it installed if possible).

I am writing an application in which a user is doing a file conversion. I have a set of tools that can perform the conversion on the fly via command line, but I'm not entirely sure of how to go about passing the parameters I need to the command line and running them. Can someone point me to the right direction?Would I just create a System.Diagnostics.Process and use that? If so how do I do the line by line command? For instance if I need to issue a cd command to change the directory and then execute a command after that how would I do that?

I have a TabControl object on my form with many tabs created in code (TabPages) and my problem is that the same objects that are in the initial TabPage needs to be in the other TabPages created in code, I have this done in code when the user clicks the 'New Tab' menu option, however the same code is used for any new tabs created. The problem created here is that I have an event against one of the objects that appear in the other TabPages, but because the same code is used to create any new tab pages, the event will only work on the newest tab page, if that makes sense? By the way these objects that appear on the other TabPages are properties at the top so events can be handled against them in the respective subroutine.

I have VB.NET application in which one of the form has IE control in it, the application starts initially with memory size consumed around 9 MBs, but when IE form is launched, the memory consumed rises to 27 MB, and when that form is closed, the memory reduces merely by 3-4 MBs, so why memory allocated to IEFrame is not de-allocated automatically?

I have a few forms that have a lot of really intensive updating along with a great deal of user interface (text boxes, button clicking etc) Is it possible to open a separate form as a separate UI thread from the start up form that called it to "show" or open or whatever the new method might be?

I am creating a simple researcher application to access and store data. As of today it workes by entering a number into a text field and hit enter/button. The result then shows up in a non-menu webbrowser window. What i would like it to do was to exclude the web browser window, and instead show in a popup window inside the application. This should be rather easy, here's what i think might be a problem. I want only to show specific lines from the webpage, not the whole page.

I need helps on the following of my questions. I want to separater my Windows application project into two parts.(Currently how i code is all my class, module, form will be in one single project)
Now I want to separate them into two projects under one solution.That is One project will only include pure design which is win forms.And another project will include DB processing and background business logic.
Can I know how to do that??Currently only way I can think of is pass the required win form control to the Class Project. But I don't think it is a good way. And at some point, I may need to use all controls on the form to perform a single job. So, I end up passing all controls to the Class Project.
I want to try to google it but don't know which key words I should use to search. My vocab power is not that good in english.If you know how or have some samples (even a button click or display some text sample) , please kindly share me about this.
The reason I do this is because I want to separate my business logic with design. So, later me or other developer who handle my projects can focus on business logic if something went wrong. I think this can make the projects easier to debug and study.And also easier to pass to end user if we update or fix the error.In so, we don't need to give the whole set up package to user. we only need to pass them the dll class.

I am building a simple windows form (using VB.NET) for a friend to use at work. His company has about 10 specific colors schemes (they have list of RGB values) that they use for the company logo, website etc.
I want to follow this color scheme in my application and, to simplify development, would like to build an enumeration of these colors to avoid hard coding the RBG value for every label, panel etc.
My initial thought was to do the following:
Enum ColorTypes
CompanyDarkBlue = Color.FromArgB(0,56,147)
CompanyBlue = Color.FromArgB(0,111,198)
CompanyLightBlue = Color.FromArgB(0,145,201)
End Enum
However, it's not that simple as a constant is required. I looked around on the internet and I found an example of how to achieve what I need but it seemed inordinately complicated for what seems like quite a common requirement for application development.

I'm wanting to develop what I perceive to be a pretty simple application. I want something that runs in the system tray that tests for the presence of a particular file on a network drive. If the file does not exist, the icon in the system tray is a green circle (like a traffic light).If the file DOES exist, then the system tray icon is a yellow circle (caution), until the user clicks it (the yellow system tray icon), and a record is written to another file, then the system tray icon changes to a red (stop) circle until that first file we tested for is gone.I'd also like to create "balloon messages" to go with the changes in the system tray icon.

I've search the net in order to create a custom control but nothing I find is worth looking at, The main thing I want to do is create a skinengin via DLL and import it in my vb 2010 then using or creating some sort of skin builder where I can create a full setting file which contains all the details of the customization regarding the Form(Look, Feel and the controls such as a menu), I have used Iriskin and multiple apps doing this for me and when a user installs my application they still recieve a message about buying the registered DLL file, I would like to create it completely from scratch.

I am trying to create a small windows forms application that demonstrates how a user can use pen-based input(ona Lenovo X220 tablet PC) to enter text (rather than typing on a keyboard) I am using Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010.I think the control I want to add to my Visual Basic Project is the Microsoft InkEdit ControlThe instructions I see on other parts of microsoft websites refer to a .net framework componed called InkEdit. The instructions I found so far is to right-mouse click on the tool box, click 'choose items' and then select the Inkedit Control from the .NET Framework components.

If I have a large number of classes, each similar to the other in certain aspects (they all share a common base class, but each does things differently), and I need to create Windows forms for each to allow easy changing of their values through a GUI? Create one matching form for each object in VS' forms designer, Or Use code to create the forms dynamically at runtime.
#2 makes the most sense to me, because a lot of these objects will share very common features of the form, notably "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons. But one object might need to draw a textbox on the form while another might need to draw a combobox. Not to mention, if I want to put icons on the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons, I'd have to do this for each copy of the form in designer, and that sounds like it could get out of hand quickly.But is drawing forms through code sane? VS' forms designer is pretty sophisticated and designed to make life easier. Am I wise to consider ignoring its functionality and diving into the trench warfare of forms design through code? Or are there examples of automating form creation based on an existing object's properties?

I have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).
My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.

The environment will not create a resource file for a newly created Windows Forms Application. When I add a button Visual Studio displays a dialog "File Exist". That'sall, plus an OK button. There is no file name or the file name is in unreadable characters.The dialog comes from Visual Studio because the title is "Microsoft Visual Studio".There is no resource file so it must be that the resource file cannot be created.I uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio 2008. It did not change anything.I believe the problem was caused by opening the same project rapidly twice on an i7 laptop. I have done this unintentionally before and I can testify that unpredictable

VB.Net Windows forms feature controls that are often dragged from the toolbox onto the form. The code for the control goes right into the form. Usually this is great, but is it possible to write the code for a UI control (like a panel) into a separate file which can then be imported or otherwise included into the main Form Class?
Context (a.k.a. long version): I have a form with an unchanging column of navigation buttons on the left hand side. The rest of the form is taken up by different panels, which in turn have different controls of their own. Clicking the different buttons on the left should cause these different panels to appear (clicking button "A" brings up panel "A"; button "B" brings up panel "B", etc.), but the left-hand menu should stay unchanged.
I'm having a hard time implementing this design in an elegant way in VB.Net. If I make each panel a separate Form, I have to duplicate the code that builds the unchanging left-hand menu in every file, which is terrible. I tried using inherited forms so the separate panels would inherit the left-hand menu from a master form, but that means each click on the menu sprouts the new form in a new window, and although the left-hand menu is inherited, the menu that I clicked and the identical-looking menu in the new window are not the same objects in memory and have no knowledge of each other.
I just want one window with central content that changes based on what you click on the left-hand side. A solution to this would be for the panels to be just that - panels - and not separate forms as I'm currently doing it. But this gets messy organizationally because the code for all of the panels has to be in the one massive master file. Hence the short form of my question (see above): How can I code a panel in a separate file and then bring it into the fold of the main form?
