I am building a web crawler in .Net which executes approx 500 httpwebrequests at a time. Everything runs fine but the problem arise at some points; Looks like garbage collection thread takes over the whole application pause for a few seconds. Is there anyway that reduce the delay generated by GC.
View 1 RepliesI want to have a VB.Net windows application that monitors the page, and when it detects certain events it triggers some actions based on the data in the page. I've been searching like crazy for some mechanism to "hook" into the browser and hopefully inspect the messages transmitted for the application to know how to react.I've seen the SHDocVw COM object, which comes very close. But when I use the BeforeNavigate2 event, it only seems to fire for GETs, and once I'm on the page where the information is displayed/refreshed the event is not raised.Short of reverse engineering the page, or having to write some kind of proxy...is there a good way to do this in VB.Net?
View 1 RepliesMy timer pauses (sort of the display portion (label) of the timer indeed pauses, however when the timer is resumed it starts again, but not at the point where it was disabled. As an example. If I pause the timer at 10:00 and wait ten seconds when I hit resume it starts at 09:50, where it should resume at 10:00 or 09:59

I have an application in wich I have included a timer wich close automatically the application when no activity is detected.My problem is that when I make 'some activity' like accesing something, I do not know how can I reset the timer to 0.
View 10 RepliesI would like to try and implement a feature wherby once you have logged into an application (straightforward winforms application) and had your credetials verified the application would then force you to log on again if no activity had been detected in the application for a certain number of minutes. In essence I want to provide some extra security for those occasions when users get up and wander away from their machines for prolonged periods.
I have all the logic for logging into the application, it's just the checking for no activity over a given period and then forcing the user to log back in again that I'm not having much luck with.
I have a strange problem on one machine that my VB.Net (.NET 3.5 - VS2008) app is running on, it runs a custom sized Powerpoint presentation in an IE control within my VB app. However, on one of the machines my app is installed on, the presentation always pauses on slide 2.
This is a kiosk type app, where there is no user interactivity. On all the other machines running this software, there is no problem. So it must be something related to the machine itself.
The PC is an XP Pro machine and was originally running IE6, which displayed the problem, I ugraded it to IE8 to see if this would fix it, but the problem persists. The machine is running Powerpoint 2003 (don't recommend upgrading the machines OS/Software- this is out of the question, as it is a business spec machine - even getting IE8 installed was a battle!)
The presentation itself has no complexity, all 15 slides are basic text and photos, no animation, no video etc. As far as I can tell, the problem is nothing to do with my software, or the Powerpoint slideshow, as this operates fine on similar machines and reinstalls made no difference, it must be a problem with the machine/installation itself. I've tried running the slideshow on the problem machine, in PowerPoint itself, rather than in my app, and it runs fine. I've also tried running it in an IE window, without running it through my app, and again, it seems fine.
I know that keypresses tend to have this behaviour naturally in Windows, but when you first press down a key there's a short pause. I'm trying to use Keydown to move my Window around but it moves, then pauses, then starts moving again. Is there some way to get rid of the pause without disabling it in Windows?

I am using VS 2010 on Win 7 32 bit.I am debugging a VB application (simple Windows form) by stepping through it with F8; however, for some unknown reason it sporadically runs at full speed after I press the F8 key. This can happen at any given location in code and sometimes not at all.

A good game needs to run in full screen. (Because the new directX is not suitable for my age (13) I don't want to use it and beacuse its a bit difficult to use it.) I have made quite a nice and tidy little game. Its based around space invaders and works quite well. however because i have finished my college project almost 2 weeks ahead of the assignments release date, my tutor has asked me to tweak my project and make it better.So far i have added a full main menu to the game and a full splash screen. I would like to add in a section for recorded high scores but have no idea how to attempt this at all.

View 2 RepliesI have two timers in my application. One that updates some text label every 100 ms, and another one which makes the text scroll to the left. Both timers are working fine, however,if Timer2 is enabled i get some problems while playing fullscreen video in VLC. Usually the mouse dissapears when running full screen and leaving the mouse, but if my program is running (and therefore Timer2 is enabled) the mouse wont dissapear. If i go disable Timer2 theres no problems.. I just dont understand why it is only Timer2 that does this and why timer one doesn't affect VLC? Timer1 and Timer2's code is below

Quick question - if I have a timer set to 5000 (5 seconds) and the code in the timer takes longer than 5 seconds to run because of sql stuff, will the timer wait until the code is done till it fires again?

But while debugging (and "Address" field is left empty), the program breaks and I get an exception at the "Throw New Exception" line even if the error should be trapped by the "Try...Catch" block.
At runtime, everything works well and the correct error is displayed.
Does anyone know of a way to detect recent activity in a VB.net windows forms application?
We have a retail store where users share floor computers, the application will be on each machine and require a log in before use. I am trying to find a way to automatically close the application if it has been idle for lets say 10 minutes.
I guess I could do something similar with the current windows log on session - set a gp that logs the user out after 10 minutes of inactivity - but if there is an easy, non memory intensive way to do it in vb.net i would rather use that method
I'm in the process of creating a tool that allows users to download stuff from a LAN server. The progress of the download is now being shown as a progress bar that performs a step each time a file is downloaded.
But if the file is a large file (Let's say a 2 GB file) it'll take a while before the progressbar performs a step and the user might think the tool froze up and close it. Now i'm wondering if there's a way to show the activity on the NICs installed. Something like when you open up task manager and go to the "Networking" tab. Showing it as a graph would be awesome or just a percentage is good aswell I have NO idea where I should start looking..

I'm developing a utility that will look through Active Directory and find anyone that hasn't logged in 90, 120, 180, 365 days. Between what I know and researched on here I've pieced together code that works part of the time. When I LDAP a container with approx 2000 or less user objects it will work, but when I LDAP the entire directory it loops through approx 60,000 user objects.Part of the way through it returns the following warning:
