I wrote an import procedure that extracts certain row data from Excel files. Currently, I manually create a DataTable in VB.NET, add columns and their datatypes. don't add anyconstraintsto the table, but the SQL database table where this data is going to does haveonstraintssuch as a column can't be null, check constraintsor unique constraints.Here is a simple example of my code.

I am using oracle and trying to create a datagridview but when i try to create the dataset i get the error "could not retrieve schema information for table or view" stating my database and table name. I am using the Oracle client not the OLEDB as i have always used that and had no problems. I am using Oracle 11g.

In my SQL Server database I created a Table called "QUESTION" with the same fields. QuestionNumber is defined as integer unique key, auto increment
Now, when i make a bulk copy to insert the DataTable into the SQL Server, the database overwrites my QuestionNumber from the DataTable and generates new ones (starting from 1 increment 1).
How do i have to change my database setup, that the original QuestionNumbers are copied into the database?
I am using microsoft access 2003 and visualbasic.net. I am trying desperately to add a database using the wizard, and it lets me go through with it, testing the connection is good, but when I try to finish it gives me an error: "<customers>Could not retrieve schema information for table or view customers." What am I doing wrong? I've added databases in the past without this problem using the same Access.
There is an old timesheet application being used in my company and i am going to rewrite it in asp.net.There are other tables which can be linked to new Timesheet table like employee table but my main concern here is the Project and Project_Activity table.In the current system, there is a one project and a activity table which are linked to the timesheet table seperatly and user has to spend alot of time on selecting activities code they worked on for specific project.I have came up with the new idea; Project manager will have to fill up a project template and link all the activities code with the one project before starting this project. This way user will have to select the project only and it will automatically bring the associate codes for them.I like to know if this design will work okay? and is it okay to link Project_Activity table with timesheet? The above is more or less the complete question. I have created a table in the VB 2010 Database Explorer but I cannot for the life of me work out how I can get this copied or created into the underlying server. It is not appearing in the underyling serverand when I run the code of course I ge "invalid object <tablename>" I have data as well in the table that appears in Database Explorer. I think I have missed something fundamental in my overall conception of using VB 2010 Express with SQL Server Express in that I don't know if I have a local copy (that isn't then mirrored on the server), or what (the ____ have I got)? An article that explains the overall relation of Database Explorer to the underyling Server would be great as well
I have a purely XML database. It's stored as XML, there is no other database file. I did this by first creating a dataset in VB, then adding tables and relationships. I load the database by calling DataSet.ReadXml(FilePath), and save the database by calling DataSet.WriteXml(FilePath).
Now I need to make schema changes, but need to preserve existing data. How might I go about doing this? As soon as I load the database I loose all data if I change the schema in the dataset designer.
I have searched for changing database schema, but everything I find deals with real databases, not XML only ones, and the info doesn't apply because they are using db connections and then running sql against it and AFAIK XML databases have no way to "connect".
I have a simple Windows Service that reads from an Excel spreadsheet and imports the records into a SQL Server 2000 database table. Before it loads it checks if the file has been successfully imported before (using filename) and whether any of the records in the file have been imported before (using primary key). If these checks are ok I load the records into a datatable and then update the datatable to the database.
However, I need to do this in a transaction as I want to ignore the whole file if there is an error. The file goes to a discarded folder and the user gets an email with why the import failed. (This is likely to be because the store the record is for is not yet added to the database and the referential intergrity of the db fails). If there is no transaction the records before the failure record are imported. When the file is imported again (the store has been added to store table) the file is then rejected because duplicate records are already in the db.
I am having a problem with my program that is desinged to read a 3rd party text file database. I posted previosuly about a problem inserting an item in a new row and the column was expectig a different data type. It appears that sometimes the column is being determined to be of decimal value, I dont understand why. the fields contain information such as
Col1 F123456 CLW-12321 etc....
So my column fills with 123456 12321 the letters just get chopped off
So I added MaxScanRows = 0 to my schema file and that took care of the problem
Except now several of my columns that contain Date Values are coming back
9/24/2010 00:00:00
without the setting MaxScanRows = 0 The date returned 9/24/2010

I am thinking that without the MaxScanRows = 0 setting the datatype for Col1 is being incorrectly determined
I am not sure what is happening with other columns that contain date values. Apparently If i use MaxScan Rows=0 all columns are being pulled over as string value which creates numerous problems. If I dont use maxscanrows then all columns appear to be correct except Col21 MLSNUM which is being pulled in as a decimal. Can I change that in the schema file?
[Code] my issue is that now i need two cases, first i need a query that will return the date created and modified of the table and i also need to know if its possible to query a list of table names in the database ordered by date created but that have a certain thing in their names. for example the database contains the following tables: [Code] and what i need the query to return is the tables that contain "Data", settings and employees are for the other functions of the program. so the query should return the 4 data tables in order of date created. but i have no idea how to go about doing that in the query, does anyone know how this is done?

This is really a pre-defined table and the data is already specified to be inserted to the table. However, my primarily task is to read a flat file which has the data and consider the first line as the column to be column names.
Therefore, initially I created an open dialogue to browse for the text file and store the path such as E:Datafile est.txt, in a TextBox1 visible at run time.
