View 11 RepliesI am trying to copy a table in a database into another database on another connection in VB.NET, using OleDb. If they were on the same connection I would just use SELECT INTO, but they are not. I have two different OleDbConnection and cannot see an easy way to do this.
Right now I am attempting to just copy the database into a DataTable using an OleDbDataAdapter, and then loop through the DataTable and insert every record into the target database one at a time. This obviously takes a ton of time for the large DB I could potentially be dealing with, and I have to deal with escaping strings, null values, etc.
edit - just to make this more clear: I have two OleDbConnection objects, one is linked directly to a local .mdb file on my computer (JET). The other is linked to a database on our servers (SQLOLEDB). I am wanting to do this:
"SELECT * FROM fromDB INTO toDB"
But I can't because fromDB and toDB are on different connections, and the OleDbCommand object is only attached to one. The only way I can see how to do this is to connect to fromDB, copy it into a DataTable, connect to toDB, and copy all of the data in the DataTable row by row into toDB. I was wondering if there is an easier way to do this.

I am using a string builder to set up an html table row by row so that it can be emailed. I currently gather my information from the database using a data reader and while dataReader.read, I use stringbuilder.Append to add each cell value to the table.The issue is that after about 200 rows, the html breaks and displays a cell value above the table in the email. I have tried changing the cell padding, but this was not successful.

I know how to do this if the table data is exactly the same, but I need to generate a new HeaderKey for the destination table.Example - I am copying SalesOrder Header Data into the PickList Header Table, but I need to also add a PickListHeaderKey when I do so. The function (runnig on SQL server) returns a table with four columns, one row.How do I call this function from Visual Basic? cmd.ExecuteScalar() is obviously not correct. In c++ I use a recordset. What is the equivalent in vb? Does anyone have a short example?

I'm writing an app to print a list of beers that are currently on tap at the restaurant where I work part-time. We have 29 taps and dozens of different beers. I have 2 tables in a database (one with the "master list" of all the beers and an "on tap" one with one entry per tap). Each database entry includes fields for name, brewer, location, style and ABV. So far I've made a GUI with 29 combo boxes (one for each tap) and 2 buttons (one that opens a dialog box to modify the "master list" and one to print the list). The idea was to make it as simple as possible since the people who use it aren't great with computers and are often in a hurry.
Each combo box drops down the whole master list of beers and I'd like for the selected beer to be written to the corresponding index in the "on tap" table. My idea is to then extract the data from the "on tap" table and print it. I haven't done any coding yet, really, just drag-and-drop.It's frustrating since I know how I'd do the back end in C or C++, but not in VB. The reverse is true for the GUI.
Now I am trying to copy the MS access table(hoping to keep the input mask). I have the table copying and renaming, but it fails to keep the input mask... So far this copies and clears the table, is there anything I am missing to make it keep the input mask

Here's the program. there are five categories say a, b, c, d, e, each in a textbox (color blue). There will be a command button say "choose". If i click the choose button, it will randomly choose one category and that corresponding textbox example "a" will change color(color yellow). Then if I want to click the choose button again, the selected category "a" from the first selection will change to gray, then a new category will be randomly chosen without "a" in the list and again will change to color yellow. and so on. So I can click the choose button five times, exhausting the five categories without repeating the category that was already selected.

I have a listbox in a form which shows a column (which is sorted by another column value by ORDER clause) of the parent table and other columns are in textboxes. The child table is represented by a datagrid. When I add a new item in parent table and click save, the newly created item is listed at the bottom of the listbox violating my ORDER clause. My question is simple anI hope the answer is the same. We are converting our systemsfrom Windows XP to Windows 7 and we need the extended runtime modules so a number of our applications will actually work.
I cannot locate the install for this in the Visual Studio download area. Is the re-distributable part of the studio install (so it should be on one of the developers systems) or do I download it from somewhere else.
Im kind of wondering can I fix this? When I edit code in Visual Basic 2008 Exspress Edition it will everytime open after maybe 15 to 30 mins feeze and close, sometimes it unfreezes but not always
