XML Database Changing Schema And Migrating Existing Data?

Aug 5, 2010

I have a purely XML database. It's stored as XML, there is no other database file. I did this by first creating a dataset in VB, then adding tables and relationships. I load the database by calling DataSet.ReadXml(FilePath), and save the database by calling DataSet.WriteXml(FilePath).

Now I need to make schema changes, but need to preserve existing data. How might I go about doing this? As soon as I load the database I loose all data if I change the schema in the dataset designer.

I have searched for changing database schema, but everything I find deals with real databases, not XML only ones, and the info doesn't apply because they are using db connections and then running sql against it and AFAIK XML databases have no way to "connect".

DB/Reporting :: Migrating Access Database To MS SQL?

Jul 16, 2009

I need to update a database app written in VB, Visual Studio 2003, using an Access Database.Currently: Customer has 4 users, local network. Access Database is 30MB, about 50 tables.Wanted: Customer is opening new offices, and wants to connect to the database via the internet. There will be 10-15 users.App background: I have all data access via OleDbDataAdapters and one OleDbDataConnection. There are 4 DataSets: Global, Lookup, Reports, FormSpecific.

I have one Private function: FillTable:

Private Function FillTable(ByVal TableToFill As DataTable, _
Optional ByVal OleDbAdpToUse As OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter = Nothing) As Integer
' fills the table by using OleDbDataAdapter.Fill(aTable)

[code]...

All is working well. What I Need to Do:I think I need to migrate the Access Database to MS SQL. What I Have:Visual Studio 2008 Professional. I have started the MS SQL walkthroughs. I did the Create a Data Connection to the Northwind Database walkthrough, and connected via MS SQL Server. I cannot find where I can modify the SQL Commands. If I convert my Access Database to a MS SQL Database then can I

1) Just update the OleDbConnection, so it connects to the MS SQL Database (not the Access database).

2) If I cannot do #1, what do I need to start with?

Changing An Existing Component?

Jun 3, 2009

I have a large project which consists of about 60 modules. It contains a lot of DataGridView components.

Recently I implemented cut-copy-paste functionality to one of the DataGridViews.

What is the best way to add same functionalities to all the other DataGridViews .

P.S. I don't want to create a new component which inherits DataGridView and re-define all the DataGridViews.

Could Not Retrieve Schema From Database

What am I doing wrong? I've added databases in the past without this problem using the same Access.

Sql Timesheet Database Schema

May 16, 2012

There is an old timesheet application being used in my company and i am going to rewrite it in asp.net.There are other tables which can be linked to new Timesheet table like employee table but my main concern here is the Project and Project_Activity table. In the current system, there is a one project and a activity table which are linked to the timesheet table seperatly and user has to spend alot of time on selecting activities code they worked on for specific project.I have came up with the new idea; Project manager will have to fill up a project template and link all the activities code with the one project before starting this project. This way user will have to select the project only and it will automatically bring the associate codes for them.I like to know if this design will work okay? and is it okay to link Project_Activity table with timesheet? VS 2008 Finding/Changing Range From Existing Excel Chart?

Aug 2, 2011

I have an Excel template that contains numerous pre-defined charts and a program that opens this template and collects data used to populate the charts. This works great but I now want to adjust the series length so that the charts only used the data collected (not a range of 32000). I'm trying to iterate through the charts and determine the range for each series of each chart but not having much luck. The snippet below allows me to see the xvalues but does not return any information as to where this data is located. Does anyone know how to extract the range for each series in a chart?

XML Schema As Custom Data Type?

Nov 17, 2010

I'm building a vb.net application that composes messages for later message queueing in accordance with a predefined schema that an observer of the message queue requires.I've made the XSD file for the schema already, but I was wondering if there was any way to import the schema as or convert it to a custom object type in my .net application, where the elements of the schema would represent data fields or sub-objects to be filled programmatically.

Is there any way to do this?Am I getting my terminology correct here, or would there be a better way to accomplish what I'm attempting to do?I'd like to be able to create a schema and use it as a definition for some kind of data transfer object in my applications, without having to make the object as a separate VB class file.

Ex

When I give this query it will show me a warning. Because warning leads to a constraint error when ever i call the same function in a windows form.

Data Management - Changing Current Database System, MS Access 2007 Front End And MS SQL Server 2005 Backend

May 8, 2012

We are thinking about changing our current database system, MS Access 2007 front end and MS SQL Server 2005 backend to using a higher level language such as Visual Basic .Net. I wonder if this is the BEST solution for data management? Currently, among others, we have two big database programs that handle more than two hundred users and it's crashed often. That's the reason we think about changing to something that can handle these database programs effectively preferably using MS technology such as .Net.

Load XML Schema Place Data In Elemants And Creat XML File?

i have been coding for years, but never integrated XML. So I guess I'm a newbie. I have inserted an XSD file in my project, ARequest.xsd. I created a folder in my project called XML just to organize things, so this file ARequest.xsd, is in this folder.

Now I have a form that displays data from a database that has the same fields that are in this XSD file. Can I load the XSD file into my Windows Form, load the elements from the data on the windows form and then create an XML file then send it? If so how? Any code snippets would be helpful. VS 2005 Schema .ini DateFormat - Program That Is Desinged To Read A 3rd Party Text File Database

Jan 8, 2011

I am having a problem with my program that is desinged to read a 3rd party text file database. I posted previosuly about a problem inserting an item in a new row and the column was expectig a different data type. It appears that sometimes the column is being determined to be of decimal value, I dont understand why. the fields contain information such as

Col1
F123456
CLW-12321 etc....

So my column fills with
123456
12321 the letters just get chopped off

So I added MaxScanRows = 0 to my schema file and that took care of the problem

Except now several of my columns that contain Date Values are coming back

9/24/2010 00:00:00

without the setting MaxScanRows = 0
The date returned 9/24/2010

Here is the code for my schema ini file I am creating:

HTML

Dim fs As New FileStream("Schema.ini", FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write)
Dim writer As New StreamWriter(fs)
[CODE]............

I have been trying different settings hence the dimmed out lines

Here is the code to fill the datatable:

HTML

[CODE].............

I am thinking that without the MaxScanRows = 0 setting the datatype for Col1 is being incorrectly determined

I am not sure what is happening with other columns that contain date values. Apparently If i use MaxScan Rows=0 all columns are being pulled over as string value which creates numerous problems. If I dont use maxscanrows then all columns appear to be correct except Col21 MLSNUM which is being pulled in as a decimal. Can I change that in the schema file?
