View 1 RepliesI'm trying to make a email client but my biggest problem is finding a component that is (preferably) free. I need one that works with IMAP and POP3. Also would be nice if it could handle sending emails (Via SMTP). It would also be great if it worked with gmail.

I am developing a vb.net desktop application that reads mails from the mailserver using pop and imap. The application is almost fnished .The problem is the some time when a command is send to retrieve a mail using GetMessage() functions the applications is going to a halt. So I tried to run the the code in debug mode and ran line by line.
What I noticed is in the while loop in GetMessage() function is
While Not tmpString.StartsWith(sPrefix)
tmpString = reader.ReadLine
msg = msg & tmpString & vbCrLf
End While
The reader reads line by line at certain point of time it got hangs. Some times it ill catch an exception and give an error. I am pasting the exception below:
"Received an unexpected EOF or 0 bytes from the transport stream".
But some times the applications will hang and go for a halt. This applications has to run 24/7. So if it hangs in the night or it will be problem. What I want is if the reader is not able to read from the stream after certain time period. The control has to be removed from the reader and the function has to return a message. I am new to this the network level applications and I am running shot of time.
Public Sub connect()
Dim objTCP As New TcpClient
Dim sslstream As Net.Security.SslStream
Dim reader As StreamReader = Nothing

I have a client that is going to be receiving plain text emails (with no attachments) from their customers. My plan is to create a vb.net watcher that will pick up the emails periodically. The emails are all going to come in to a specific email address. I need to read the body of the messages line by line and post the information into their database. I need to know if it's easiest to automate Outlook (which is installed on the server machine this vb.net app will run on) OR to use set up POP3 code in the watcher and make it it's own email client. I have a feeling from some things I've read already that it will be easier to just automate Outlook but I need to know for sure. I've done quite a bit of coding in vb.net for sending emails via SMTP but nothing for receiving via POP3. The machine this will sit on is a Windows 2008 server and at the moment has Office 2003 (11) pro installed (including Outlook 11).
If the best, quickest (developmentally) way is to use Outlook then I figure I need to do the following in vb.net (after manually setting up an email account in Outlook for the address the messages are going to come into):Manually set up an account for the email address that the messages will come into Code vb.net watcher to:
1. open outlook
2. do a receive on the address in question
3. put the emails for that address into a specific folder in outlook
4. open them up one at a time and read the bodies of the messages
5. once read, move them into a "processed" folder
6. close outlook instance
The watcher will also send a reply (SMTP) that the message has been received and processed but I already have code for this part.If Outlook is the best way to go, can anyone point me to something that outlines how to do steps 1 through 6? I found some info on automating outlook but it's not that detailed.
I've always found deeper-knowledge articles elsewhere, but your community is the most co-operative and your forum article-editor is the best.I'm a Systems Engineer who works in an Anonymous Company. My indirect supervisor (my boss's boss) wanted to have a custom GMail Vacation Auto-Responder that would:Have a list of involved GMail accounts.2- Connect to GMail and identify unread messages.3- Auto-Reply to the senders of those unread messages with a custom auto-reply template.Well, this could have been done easily using the GMail Atom Feed url... but since the atom only provides access to the very latest 20 unread messages, it could not be used for that purpose.
So, I had only one of two choices, either use POP3 or IMAP. Of course, IMAP was the right candidate for many considerations, the most prudent of which is its resourceful command-set. I had to design the tool (a Windows Service in this case) with minimal data transfer/session time in mind, because Google becomes touchy when you over-use IMAP with its servers.I was new to the whole Socket/IMAP thing, so I had to get my feet wet. I designed the tool, planned it well, and thought the best work-flow would go like this: Well, my boss's boss had some comments - that he never really declared which makes them IMPLICIT :D :D :D - on the way the tool works, but he decided to spell the word only when I announced that my proto-type code is done. He is not supposed to be technically involved - I mean into code - although he really involves himself into bits and bytes, and he has not even seen the code, not to mention that he might not fully understand it, but yet somehow he declared that what I did was a waste of time.[code]

View 9 RepliesI am sending an email with an attachment using the following Code
Dim msg As New System.Net.Mail.MailMessage(req.EmailFrom, req.EmailTo)
Dim att As New System.Net.Mail.Attachment("C:Documents and SettingsmichaelrDesktop1216259.pdf")
With msg
.Attachments.Add(att)

The file size of the attachment is 396KB, upon the recipient receiving the email outlook shows the file size as 543Kb. Strange thing is if I send an email with the same attachment using outlook the file size is 396Kb.I understand that file sizes can increase due to the attachment being base 64 encoded as opposed to just raw binary.What I am failing to see is why outlook send a file which is 396KB in size but in code when sending it, the same file is 543Kb.
how would i implement a way that i would not hard code the email message that the application send to email recipients? how will i also include email message formatting (text in bold, italic, etc.)?
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to get my program to send very simple text email messages. I did do a search beforehand, and found that I was having the same issue as someone else, but the specific question I have was not answered --
I've learned that if you're trying to send mail, you need an SMTP server... I found this list here but every one of them I've tried yields the same "Failure sending mail" error.
Here's my
Dim mail As New MailMessage()
mail.From = New MailAddress("me@mycompany.com")
mail.To.Add("destination-email@whatever.com")
[CODE]...
Is the problem that I need to show "credentials" (i.e. user/pass)? If so, what would those credentials be? Can I use my yahoo email SMTP server with my login info to do it? And is this all I'd need to add to add the credentials?
smtp.Credentials = New NetworkCredential("MyUsername", "MyPassword")
(before the smtp.Send, of course)
A client for our company contains an apostrophe in their email name joe's@joe.com. I was advised that this is the correct and current email for the given client. Below is the Expression string I am using with Regex (which I copied from the internet somewhere) to validate email addresses. How can this expression be modified to allow/accept apostrohe's?
strRegex =
"^([a-zA-Z0-9_-.]+)@(([[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.)|(([a-zA-Z0-9-]+.)+))([a-zA-Z]{2,4}|[0-9]{1,3})(]?)$"
I have to make a basic program that: Create a program with a simple interface that
1. Asks the user type his/her email address into a textbox.
2. When the user clicks the "Evaluate Email Address" button, one of two message boxes pops up: "That is a valid email address!" with an "Information" icon, or "That is an invalid email address!" and on a second line, "Please retype your email address.", with an "Exclamation" icon
3. To be considered valid, the email address must -include an "@" symbol, and -it must end in either ".com", ".net", or ".org" or ".edu" (I don't know how to check a string and test if its last four characters end with any of these and make it say not valid email address. I think I might have to use a case statement)
I'm using the Chilkat add-on to read email from a pop3 server. I can download the headers fine but the headers all download into one column.How can I get my email to put the headers in the appropriate columns?
'Display the From email address and the subject.
ListView2.Items.Add(email.From)
ListView2.Refresh()
ListView2.Items.Add(email.EmailDate)
ListView2.Refresh()
[Code]...
What I am trying to do is to download the "From" person into the "From" columns and the "Date" of the email into the date column, so on and so forth but I'm not able to get them to go into their separate columns.
I am buidling an application that users can use to submit text data and attachments to email recipients. Certain fields, quite a few in fact from the textboxes in the app will be in the email body, and some in the subject line.This is how I am doing it right now, but I figured there has to be a better way. In VB it is one single line of code, not many like it is here. Ideally I would like to be able to better control the positioning in the message body.
mail.Body = String.Concat(Label1.Text, " ", TextBox1.Text, " ", Label2.Text, " ", TextBox3.Text, " ", Label5.Text, " ", DateTimePicker1.Text, " ", Label3.Text, " ", TextBox2.Text, " ", Label6.Text, " ", RichTextBox1.Text, " ", Label7, " ", RichTextBox2.Text)
I wouuld like to open outlook with new email with provided subject line, body message and attachment but no email address. User will enter the email address and click send . How can I do this?

I am creating an application in ASP.Net 2.0, the user can choose the service that he want and submit the request after choosing the form and filling the needed details the user should click on the submit button, then two emails should be sent; a confirmation email to the user him/herself and a notification email to his/her direct manager to get the approval on the requested ticket.How can I send the emails using VB language?
View 9 RepliesHere is the problem, I have an Access form and a textbox for an e-mail address. The email address is not required, I only want to check for a valid email address when a value or address has been entered into the e-mail filed. Example: If e-mail is not empty or if email field has a value, then check for the follow elements, matched the email address with the required format. If the e-mail field is empty, do not look for anything, move on.

View 3 RepliesWhat I would like to do is create a command button that launches an email from outlook attaching the current word document to a set email address. I'm not fussed if the word document is saved or not as it is only the email receipent that needs it, likewise I don't mind if the code instructs the email to send of just opens it ready to be sent.I have read through loads of forums and tried loads of codes but cannot get any to work.
View 3 RepliesI've followed the instructions from this article http:[url]..... . My only problem is It compiles fine but no email arrives. I have a feeling it's for obvious reasons which escape me. This is my aspx.vb page.
