How To Break Dependencies Without Modifying Production Code

From my initial readings on unit testing it is wise to put all of your setups and tests in a separate project from the code being tested.I've recently begun reading The Art of Unit Testing, trying to discover how to break dependencies on things such as database calls.The methods offered involve changing areas of the test code, such as adding specific interfaces and "stub" methods to the production code.This seems to defeat some of the good things about keeping tests and production code separate.Is there any recommended dependency-breaking technique that doesn't involve changing production code?

I have an application that contains both test code and production code. The test code points to the test files on the local machine while production is located on the server. I comment out the production code when testing. To save some time I figured I would create a Global Variable integer called pTest and encase the test and production code in a Case statement so that if I set pTest=1 then the test code will run and if pTest=0 then production code will run.

In ASP.Net Web Forms there are cases that I've come across that create order dependent code. As an obvious code smell I'm looking for solutions to solve this problem.
A pseudo-code example would be: Calling Code :: Page.aspx

LoadControl has two signatures, the one used above accepts a string for the control classes physical location and correctly creates the child controls. Whereas the second signature accepts the control class as a class type, and any parameters for the constructor, however the child controls are not created as detailed in TRULY Understanding Dynamic Controls.
So how can I eliminate this order dependency in the cleanest way? My first thought is that if I dynamically created the child controls in ControlX, but then that can be cumbersome for larger controls.

since upgrading from 2008 to 2010 i have seen an issue where i pause my vb.net project,modify some code, resume, but the app does not execute the new code, it continues as if nohthing was changedery strange, very frustrating
for example

I'm testing the code below from another author, which works well for reading in the data. Despite this, once the data is populated I also need the DataGrid to be able to accept and delete data too. Is it possible to modify the code for this? I tried several things (in properties too) but am not sure if it is possible in this example.

I modified some code to suit one of my other programs, but have come across a difficulty: For some reason, the output file is not outputting. 1: Now the send and received data is shown in one RichTextBox but I would like to split this into two RichTextBoxes (RtbSend and RtbReceived).It is unclear to me how and were data is assigned to the RichTextBox?

I created a small vb.net console app in visual studio 2008 trying to learn .net but my results show differently when I break in the code and press F11 to step through. If I do it this way, the results I expect to get show but if I don't break into the code the results aren't what I'm expecting.
Basically everytime I click a button i want to write four numbers that are random. If I break into the code, these show random numbers i.e. 1 3 4 3 but if i don't break into the code. my numbers are all the same i.e.1 1 1 1. Here is my code, like I said I'm still learning so the logic is probably not correct.

We can reproduce it to the point it happens whenever we click Tab, but short of putting a break point at the beginning of every method in the project to find out what is executing.

There has to be a setting for this somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it. When I "Start Debugging (F5)", if there is an issue with my code, I get a "Build Failed" notification, in the lower left of my screen. I would like to be directed to the location of the failure. So far I have been lucky and have been able to find the offending code but this is getting scary .

-VB6 and VS2008 IDEs use Ctrl+Break to pause execution for debugging.
-I need a way to map another key combination to trigger a Ctrl+Break
My setup may make this easier or harder but to be clear I am running Kubuntu 9.10 (latest stable) and WinXP in a VirtualBox VM. Obviously all VB6/VS2008 dev is taking place in the virtual machine.So maybe it's possible to have the linux host send through Ctrl+Break based on a key mapping, or maybe it's possible to remap directly in WinXP. I'd settle for any solution as atm I need to use the XP On-Screen keyboard to send a Ctrl+Break.

This is an IDE question for VB Express 2008. It might be a bug in the IDE, or maybe it's my fault somehow?
My main form is named FrmMain and in my application's properties I have set frmMain as my startup object. All of that seems like what a lot of coders do.
But while debugging I hit Ctrl-Break, as I have done for years, and I get an behavior in the IDE that I wasn't expecting. Upon doing so, I get the green background text and the green arrow indicating in a tooltip: "This is the next statement to execute when this thread returns from the current function." Even if I didn't have the designer document open, it automatically opens frmMain.Designer.vb in the editor and hihglights line in green. The line is of course: Partial Class frmMain which is line 2 of the file. (Yes, it's highlighting the second line of the designer-generated code.)
The thing is, frmMain seems to have fully loaded and it's my startup object. As far as I know there shouldn't be a "next statement to execute" at all because code should be idle. I don't want to see the Designer.vb document... I want to edit my own code. Even though my form is behaving just fine, could there somehow be an unfinished aspect of loading the form such that it is "not returning" from a function?

I don't stop the database or run any additional tools to promote to production. It's a small company, and this seems fine. What's wrong with this technique in your opinion?

I need to sync the data of a ms-sql 2005 & 2008 server to my development server (mssql 2005 & 2008). The problem is I can't create .bak files, no permissions (to access the network share where the backup is saved). The problem is not that I may not view the data (I have complete read access to the production server). I can also backup data to csv files and read them in on my system, but that's rather painful (encoding, foreign key reference constraints, having to do it for every table, etc...). The problem is that the admin has no time to set me the necessary permissions (he has larger problems...).
How can I still sync the data to my development server ? I need some kind of syncing to a file, then transport anyhow (manual by FTP if necessary), and then update my development database. I've already tried backing up to a back file on a network share, but that doesn't work either. I don't mind if I have to code a bit in my free time, but I really don't want to do all the low level stuff myself, like resolving constraint dependencies.

Currently all my application that is released is always release in production. However I would like that changed and also have a development side (For testing).
I've tried searching for steps on how to create a development server however I cannot seem to find a tutorial.
In the past I've seen someone release their application in development by having it in on "Debug" option and have it released in production by having it on the "release" option. (I apologize for the vagueness as it was along time ago since I saw it).

I'm working on a "UPLOAD DOCUMENTS" functionality where different customer can upload the required documents and employer should be able to view all the uploaded documents by the customers. Currently in my local system I can upload the documents and it saves the uploaded file to "inetpub" folder. But in order to provide "upload documents" feature to production environment what should be the path?

I do have an application distributed with click once. I want this application to be installed (and thus distributed) two times on the same computers. One time as production version and one time as deployment version. When trying to do so, I get the folloging error:
"Unable to install this application because an application with the same identity is already installed. My MSSQL 2008 and VS2005 were corrupted out of sudden. I had reinstalled .net Framework 2.0, .net Framework 2 SP2, MSSQL 2008 and VS2005.
After installation and without any code modification, I tried to debug the program and I got the below error message.An unhandled exception of type 'System.TypeInitializationException' occured in Production.exe.Additional information: The type initializer for 'Common' threw an exception.
