How To Increase Speed Of A Data Entry Application Used By Multiple Users
Mar 15, 2012
We are four in a team using a data entry application created using VB and MS Access as backend DB. The application is installed on all our PCs, but uses my PC as server. We enter data at same time. The application has been slow since we started using it. We were advised to increase the internet bandwidth, which we doubled, but the application is still slow. What can be done to increase the speed of the application to make work move faster?

i am trying to complete a project. My task is to read large TXT files (300 files, 2.2 GB in total) read the customers inside, perform some data calculation and write each customer data to a separate txt file.
I made a code in VB6, it runs fine, however it takes 8 days to run on a quadcore processor, utilizing 20-30% of the CPU. Now I upgraded the code and am running on VB.NET 2008, the latest version. The speed still remains the same, and the CPU usage is also about the same.
Anyway I can make this process faster. I have a quadcore PC with 8GB of ram, possible to maybe make VB utilize all the CPU say 100%? so it executes atleast 2 to 3 times faster.

I have created a code in VB.NET to read data from text files. Data is read from a list of files, where each file is changed using a for loop. Data is written to a new text files. Each file is read one by one and written in the same way. Now, my speed of execution is very slow. I am using a Quadcore processor with only 20-30% of CPU utilization when my code runs. Is there anyway I can increase the speed of reading and writing? To read only 125 files it takes 10 minutes or more, which is very slow indeed, because in the end I need to read thousands of files and write them. Each file is approxiamately 30-50kb.
Here is my code.
Public Sub ReadRMRDataFileIntoTextFiles()
'Read in the customerids once up front
Dim customerids As Collections.Generic.List(Of String)
[Code].....

I am trying to create a small form that will duplicate a users entry for them.On my form i have a text box and two CheckListBox controls and a button. The user should be able enter a value into the text box, and select multiple items from both CheckedListBoxes, when they click the submit button the details will be added to a DataGridView below.
This is an example,The user enters the value Audi A4 into the textbox.
The First Checked Lsit Box is called "Colour" and from the options the user checks 'Red' and 'Blue'.
The second Checked List Box is called "Number of Doors" and from the options the user checks '3' and '5'.
When the User clicks the submit button 4 rows will be added to the DataGridView with all the different combinations, as shown below:
Model Colour No# of Doors
Audi A4 Red 3
Audi A4 Red 5
Audi A4 Blue 3
Audi A4 Blue 5
I am currently using this to populate the DataGridView:

When it is installed on a machine, it will run for all users. But for some users, it is unable to get some data from the database. I have found out that if it is run-as either administrator,or in winxp compatibility mode, it works. But if not, then some users have the problem. The database is in the same C: drive location as the exe, and it doesn't change from user to user. The computer is using windows 7 professional 32-bit.

I am writing a program in VB.net (vs 2008) that requires that only one instance of the executable be running at a time. Naturally I went for the simple solution by selecting the "Make single instance application" checkbox in the Project properties. Unfortunately, this option does not seem to work across multiple users that are logged into a single XP machine, thereby causing the same issues for my program as if I were able to run multiple instances on one single user. Granted this is a corner case, that someone would switch users while my program is running, but I'd like to understand the limitations. So my question is whether the "Make single instance application" property is supposed to work across multiple users? or is it limited to only one-instance-per-user.
Here are the steps the recreate the issue (prereqs: computer with XP pro installed, 2 user accounts (not on a Windows Domain), and a dummy "single instance" program created using the property mentioned above):
1) Log in with user1, start up the single instance program
2) Switch to user2 (StartMenu -> LogOff -> Switch User)
3) Start up the single instance program using user2
*After step 3, the program launches without complaint even though another instance is running on user1. Is this a glitch? or by design?

1.Id like to publish a free vb.net desktop application for the users to download and use meanwhile Id like to collect usage information ex: user ip address, users registration information, used features, time spent if the user allows the report to be sent back.
2.Also , in order for the user to be able to use the application, hell have to register it then, everytime, before the application loads, it gets verified online that it was registered, maybe validate the registration information or a valid user name and password, no critical personal information. The target of this step is for the application to be used exclusively by the registered user and maybe on his computer only.

I'm trying to code an 'increase' button to prompt a user to input a rate by which to increase select prices in an array. It should request the increased rate, then request a number from one to five, representing which price in the array to increase. Then, if 'increase' button is selected again and another number from one to five is chosen, then that element should be increased. It's working, but all the numbers in the array are changed. And, when I hit the increase button again, the array is repopulated below the first price increases instead of only replacing the designated price.
'declare 5 element array of prices
Dim prices() As Double = {12.2, 8.5, 12, 50, 2.4}
Dim rateIncrease As Decimal
Dim isConverted As Boolean

i have the following snippet of
For Each tempstring In SourceDataCollection
LineToFieldsTemp = Split(tempstring, ",")
LineStringWithoutFirstEntry = "" 'reset the linestring
For i = 1 To UBound(LineToFieldsTemp)
[code]....
essentially what i'm doing is to read through each item in a collection of comma separated variable strings. the first variable in each string is appended to a master filename and becomes the NEW filename to which the entire string will be appended. this is a way to split a CSV file into multiple files using the first variable in that string.
the trouble is that this is doing a LOT of writes to potentially a LOT of files, the IO is taking forever. is there a way to buffer this data until the end, then write it to a disk? be aware, the filenames and total number of files to be created is UNKNOWN at the begining of the loop. it just creates a new file each time a unique first column ID is discovered.

I have to prepare about 125 or 150 Loading Slips for various Mines to move carting to our various Factory daily into Windows Form of ERP System.
Just like here: Date:18-12-2011, Requirement No.001/11-12, Mines No.OP-128, In Charge Name: Karsanji Plot=0,Satta=0,Dump=6, Transporter:Ghanshyam Roadlines Destination:Madhapar Here Some Button to generate/modify records: Add,Edit,Save,Delete,Previous,Next, etc If I distribute 15 trucks for Ghanshyam Roadlines to move carting from OP-128 to Madhapar then I will have to entry 15 times into Windows Form of ERP System for creation loading slips numbers from 1 to 15. Here all my data to input 15 times into ERP is same, so why is it not possible to create multiple reports with single entry form?

I'm trying to create an option to select a specific entry in a SQL table if multiples exists. The Sub listed below is for a textbox (MOTxt) and a button (GotMO) for checking an MO# to pull from SQL. Based on the number entered, will populate other text boxes on the page with that row's data. There are exceptions to this, where the MONumber will be entered more than once with different data associated with each entry. So, here's my situation. If we have a duplicate MONumber listed in the table, it will populate the textboxes with the first entry it finds for an update.I would like to create a dynamic dropdownlist (that displays only if multiples are found) displaying the 'Name' field entries for each MONumber found, then once the correct name is selected from that list, to then populate the textboxes with that selected datarow. Here's my code behind:
Protected Sub GotMONum_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles GotMO.Click
Dim da As New SqlDataAdapter
[code].....

I have a windows forms application with one exe and several dlls(Class libraries) in a single solution. The application uses common data that is used across all the dlls. I would like to load the data when the application is starting up and use the loaded data at various points in the dlls so that I do not have to load the common data again and again. How can I share the data loaded in main EXE across the DLLs?

I have tried looking at "related" questions for answers to this but they don't seem to actually be related...Basically I have a VB.Net application with a catalogue, administration section (which can alter the catalogue, monitor page views etc etc) and other basic pages on the customer front end. When I compile and run the app on my local machine it seems to compile fairly quickly and run very fast. However when deployed on the server it seems to take forever and a day on the very first page load (no matter what page it is, how many stylesheets / JS files there are, how many images there are, how big the page markup is and so on). After this ALL the pages load really fast. My guess is this is due to having to load the code from scratch; after that, until it is recycled, the application runs perfectly fast. Does anyone have any idea how I could speed this part of the application up? I am afraid that some customers

My application works fine. However, I am connecting to 5 DBF files and the queries are very slow.[If I copy the DBF files to the local hard drive everything runs fast enough. 30-40 seconds vs. 1-1.5 minutes]The DBF needs to stay on the network.I am hoping that using the index will speed things up enough. Can anyone tell me how or give me a code example on how to index on DBF files?

I have a program that uses sql for the database. The issue im having is when two users attempt to update the same record then the update from second user overwrites the record from the first user. I believe this problem comes from the the way i attempt to preserve existing text in the fields.
My thought on whats going on is: If the form has fields A and B. Both users start with a blank form. User 1 adds a record with an entry in field A. When user 2 goes to update the record with an entry in form B, the program overwrites user 1s field A entry with the blank field A from user 2.
Is there a way to force it to grab the most recent data before it tries to add/update? I thought about resetting the digit combo box to the same digit which would trigger the change event for that field. but the issue with that is it would also wipe out the current entries on the form.
Below is the change event for the digit combobox, the main submit procedure, and the subprocedure for one of the days.
[code]
Private Sub cboDigit_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cboDigit.SelectedIndexChanged, cboOffice.SelectedIndexChanged, dtEndDate.ValueChanged, dtStartDate.ValueChanged
[Code].....

Here is my question: When I build the connection string do I have to use only 1 database user for all of the users of the application or does each user need to have its own database user in SQL Server?

Currently we are using a VB script macro created in word to create some fairly simple forms based off of data entered on a data entry form. I am very new to VB, and I have been able to create many applications using forms, but I have absolutely no history creating reports. I have been reading up on the reports, and it looks like they are designed to use with data sources like tables. I merely want to take either data from the entry form, or from data derived internaly from processing the user entered data and populate a defined report "form". I have been searching, but there is so much on printing reports, that I feel overwhelmed. I am not looking for the exact answer as much as a link or place to look for a sample for what I want to do.
