I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.

I'm trying to use the following command:
Dim xmlFilePath As String = _
System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("XmlFilePath")
to retrieve the following setting:
<applicationSettings>
<MySolution.WebProject.My.MySettings>
<setting name="XmlFilePath" serializeAs="String">
[Code]....
However, xmlFilePath shows up as Nothing after that line of code is run.
What's the correct code to get a setting out of the web.config file in an ASP.NET application?
NOTE: Although you can add keys individually to the <appsettings> tag, I'm trying to figure out how to use it with the "Settings" tab in the project's properties.

Is there a simple way to read from the global application.exe.config file from a dll?urrently I am loading the file as an XmlDocument but I wonder if there is a better solution.That's what I mean:If I create a new WinForms Project I have a Settings Tab in the Project properties where I can add some simple values (And I want to access the per Application settings, not the user beased ones).From my code I can access these values with:
Console.WriteLine(Properties.Settings.Default.SomeValue);
The Settings class is autogenerated in the file Settings.Designer.cs.Now I have the case where a dll need's to read the settings from the Main Application's config file. Is there a simple way to achive this? Currently I am reading the file as an XML Document.

before i use VB6 i was make multiple file for each settings, i try load my VB6 into VB.NET 2008 and code show like this
Code:
FileOpen(1, My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "path.ini", OpenMode.Input)
Input(1, home1)

1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...
2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.
Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke
Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?

I saw that you can also use a "Settings File" (Add new Item)to add your settings instead of the application settings. But I can't seem to write any values to the file. Someone with experience with the "Settings1.settings"?

In ASP.NET, I can just put my mailSettings in web.config and then ystem.Net.Mail.SmtpClient's default constructor will read them. In a regular VB.NETroject, not ASP.NET, I thought I could just put mailSettings in app.config. HoweverSmtpClient() doesn't appear to read settings from app.config. Is there a step I'm missing in order to tell a VB.NET application to read from app.config?

I bet someone already asked this but i cant seem to find it. Ok i need is a global settings that can be updated which will affect all users. I was using xml files in the program filestill now and I need to get around using this because the files can be delete or over written incorrectly. I started using the settings option and realized application level is read only and i cannot use user scope because then it wont be global settings. Is there an alternative to this.

Ive made a settings form for my latest StopWatch project. The stopwatch also includes a countdown timer. To set the time to countdown from, ive made a settings form in which you can enter a value into a textbox and when you start the countdown, it reads the value from the textbox and counts down from that value.

I read that the use of ini-files is a bit outdated and the use of XML is now. I have searched he net now for some time to find examples/tutorials about this 'feature", but I only can find C# examples.

I have an application that I need to be able to read and save a bunch of registry settings before they are changed. The purpose of this is to revert any new changes back to the original configuration. My application checks the state of each of the registry keys on startup. Is there a way to have it save the current configuration and then reload that configuration later ?

I'm using vb.net 1.1 to develop the program. I got text files that contain test result from a machine, like below.
T1 1.24535 2.56335 2.43253 1.24538 2.55619 4.35243
T2 1.42542 1.63728 3.57295 4.59275 1.57320 2.72057
T3 5.12857 2.45375 6.38593 2.58375 3.57259 3.57204
I need to check the test result with the data from database, to find out which test result is failed. If there is a fail test result, I will show an alert to the operator and stop the checking process. Until the operator close the alert, then the checking process will continue from the last read point.

I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.
I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.
Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?

I have a number of word documents I am converting. Everything is going great until I get a file that is read only. In this case I get a Save As prompt.
Is there any way to open the file in read/write format? I should have admin privileges so access isn't an issue.
I'm using VB.net to open the files. More specifically
doc = word.Documents.Open(path, Type.Missing, False, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing)

I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.
Here's what I know:
1. how to open a new file
2. how to specify the record length
3. how to close the file
Some specific questions:
Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?
Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?

I have a fairly simple XML file that I just want to read the data from.
It has 3 levels, root, main section and items. There are no attributes. I want to go to the first main section by name, then read in all the items. The items all are named the same. I've seen this done before, so it should be ok. No writing will be done. Basically this is a static data file
File looks similar to the following:
