View 1 RepliesI'm writing some code in which I need to use my own HttpResponse object to capture the output from a method on another object that takes an HttpResponse as a parameter. The problem is, this other object (which I cannot modify) calls HttpResponse.End(), which causes an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception to be thrown. What can I do about this?
Dim myStringbuilder As New StringBuilder
Dim myStringWriter As New IO.StringWriter(myStringbuilder)
Dim myResponse As New Web.HttpResponse(myStringWriter)

I'm using the following code to generate a CSV file containing data from a dataset. The CSV generates fine and a prompt box displays so that the user can either open or save the csv file. What I'm wondering is whether it's possible to save the CSV file?
Edited with solution (NB I don't need the prompt box to open as I'll be writing additional code to generate and save a number of files and then display links to them). This saves the dataset as a CSV on our server.
Protected Sub exportBtn_click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Dim ds1 As DataSet
ds1 = csvdownload.ReturnNewPledges()

MVC 3. VB.NET I have the following controller action in my application to send generated PDF files to the User by download. The function works fine when the controller itself has been invoked. But when I call to the function from outside the controller it returns a " Object reference not set to an instance of an object " error as soon as it hits the response.contenttype line. I have verified that all of the variables are in fact making it to the below action.[code]any ideas why this is only working when called explicitly from inside its containing controller???
View 2 RepliesI have nine pictures that I need to animate -I need to use the ToString method and a counter to concatenate a file name into a string variable from the Image.FromFile method. Once the counter reaches its maximum value, and the last picture is displayed, the counter should be reset to zero or one depending on how the first image file has been name. Also a static counter variable should be incremented in the time routine. what I have so far -- I know what I have to do; however, I just do not know how to code this properly.. Right now I have this going thru a button procedure but it needs to go through a timer.

Let's say I have a page Test.aspx along with test.aspx.vb.Test.aspx.vb contains a class name "TestClass". In that class I have method1(), method2() and method3()I need to be able to call one of those methods, but I can't hard code it, the method to be executed comes from a string.
I can't do
Select Case StringContainingTheNameOfTheDesiredMethod
Case "Method1"

So strings are reference types right? My understanding is a reference to the string in the heap is passed even when you pass the string ByVal to a method.
String myTestValue = "NotModified";
TestMethod(myTestValue);
System.Diagnostics.Debug.Write(myTestValue); /* myTestValue = "NotModified" WTF? *[code].....
And what is going on under the hood? I would have bet my life that the value would have changed....
I am trying to the copy the value from string to char array using String.CopyTo() method.
Here's my code
Dim strString As String = "Hello World!"
Dim strCopy(12) As Char
strString.CopyTo(0, strCopy, 0, 12)

Edit : I get the this error at runtime.ArgumentOutOfRangeException Index and count must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name: sourceIndex

Overall what I am trying to get the function name as a string but without magic strings.
Assuming below.Public Class MyTestClass Public Sub Function1(ByVal junk as String) 'Doesnt matter what this does End Sub End Class So in another function in the same class, I want to do what you think something like Me.Function1.ToString() might do (but obviously doesnt work that way). Basically, I want the function names using intellisense, but as strings, not the actual call to a function.
I'm having some issues using the String.Split method, Example here:
Dim tstString As String = "something here -:- urlhere"
Dim newtstString = tstString.Split(" -:- ")
MessageBox.Show(newtstString(0))
MessageBox.Show(newtstString(1))
The above, in PHP (My native language!) would return something here AND urlhere in the message boxes.
In VB.NET I get:
AND
: (colon)
Does the String.Split only work with standard characters?
I am attempting to use the string.compare method in VB. One of the strings come off a list box that was converted over to a string(strLotto), and the other string (stringInput) is coming off of user inputted data. I am trying to compare the two and return the values that are the same into lstSameNums.
Public Sub UserData()
lstUserNums.Items.Clear()
Dim intNum As Integer

When I run my program, I want my AverageInventoryTextBox to be formatted like $0.00 and my TurnOverTextBox to be 0.00 (2 decimal places)But when I do the strings for the textboxes and run the program, no matter what numbers I put in it just gives me $0.00 and 0.00, it SHOULD be like $13.84 or 7.44 something like that, but it will only give me zero for an answer.

I am working on my project using with regex method, but I have difficulty to get the proper strings in each line which it doesn't work in the right way. However I want to use a different way, like find the regex value then highlight the full text from one line, copy and paste the full text to input them in the label text. For e.g:

I am working in VB.NET Win forms and what I would like to do is create an object to use its properties.
The trick is that I want to create a reference to an existing class using a string variable that gets passed in to my method.
Is it possible to read a string and call the method of the same name?For example: I have many buttons and if the user presses the button named A1, I want the Sub AI() to be called. I don't want to do an explicit If-Then for each button. Rather a common ONCLICK method that is called by all buttons and another method (the same name as the name of the button) is called.
Example:
Sub Click(byVal buttonName as string)
call ButtonName ' <<<< Error. ButtonName is string and not a Method.
End Sub
Is there any easy method for splitting text in VB.NET? (using a start and end string to grab whats in between?)I do this all the time in JScript with the following:
<junk>
<blah>
<data>someData1</data>
<data>someData2</data>
[Code]...
I need to find the <div>Total</div> index then grab the data between the 1st and 3rd divs after that.
What does it mean when it checks to see if String is Null? Is it checking the string to see if it is set to Nothing?
View 1 RepliesI have a table of chars. What is the most acceptable method of turning this array into a string.
Ex:
Array: ['a']['b']['c']
-> abc
Just like the title says; I want to use something like Mid(stringName, startIndex,[integerLength]), but instead of the third argument taking a string length, I want it to take the end character index. So in an example like this:
alphabet = "ABCDEFG"
partial = *method I want to use*(alphabet, 2, 4) 'partial would equal "BC"
I have traditionally coded empty strings like this "", but for a couple of years now, I have been using String.Empty.I also normally never use optional parameters, but I'm refactoring a solution that's tied into my ERP, and I don't want to break anything. One of the changes was to add a parameter to proc, which pushes a new parameter into the method from which it is called. I coded it like this:
Optional BackReferenceID As String = String.Empty
But I got a syntax error "Constant expression is required." I guess String.Empty is non-deterministic??? Anyway, it seems like a bug. The workaround is of course to use double quotes.
I'm converting a system of numerous programs from foxpro/foxweb/javascript to asp.net/vb/sql server.
I'm coding for a dropdownlist which is currently controlled via js.
I don't like using the control this particular way, but I want to maintain look and feel for the customer.
The control is initialized with some values via Page_Load() in behind code.[code]...
I'm trying to use this overload
Split(ParamArray separator() As Char, count As Integer) As String()
However, when I use this
Dim tokens() As String = e.Node.Text.Split(New Char() {":"c}, 2)
I'm getting the ArgumentException (Illegal enum value: 2)
I tried using named arguments with no effect:
Dim tokens() As String = e.Node.Text.Split(New Char() {":"c}, count:=2)
Using this overload didn't weed out the error either:
Dim tokens() As String = e.Node.Text.Split(New Char() {":"c}, count:=2, options:=StringSplitOptions.None)
The error is occuring only at run-time. Intellisense swallows it without problem.
I have a string like "pen pencil table desktop watch" I have to format it like "penPencilTableDesktopWatch" ..... like convert to camel casing. Is there any method of string or string builder in which I can do it in one line ? ... (without splitting and formatting each string and concatenating.)
