My.Settings.Properties File - Data Is Not Getting Updated?
Mar 4, 2009I have a project where I have data in the my.settings part of the project. When I compile the project and run it on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and a Windows 7 beta machine, the data is not getting updated. In fact I can't even find the .config file that should be created when my application runs. The code I am using to update the data is this:my.settings.properties. item ("Agent").defaultValue = "Andy"my.settings.save()my.settings.reload()What do I need to do to get the changes to be saved?

Oct 23, 2008I found that there was the Settings.Properties collection as well as the Settings.PropertyValues collection, and hopefully i'm not doing extra work here, but i'm creating both, and then assigning a value to the Settings(PropName).
Defaultly, in my "static" settings (through the IDE designer window and such) I have 9 settings/properties, and at run time when I'm processing, the Settings.Properties.Count doeos indeed equal 9.
Now, in the process of my application I generate some "saved" control properties myself, and actively "add" them to the Settings:

This seems to work fine, and after the repetitive code (cycling through a collection) is finished, the Setting.Properties.Count does indeed equal 79, for the 70 new properties added.
I not only execute a My.Settings.Save() when the application exits, but I know I also have the SaveMySettingsOnExit set to true, but the next time i load up the app, my settings.properties.count is back to 9.

Format Function Anomaly ?
Dec 28, 2010The VB format() function has a bug in it that has existed for nearly 20 years! One would do this if communicating with devices that use fixed length HEX strings.
Ex: Something = Format(Hex(n), 00)
Note that the expected results occur when n = 0 to 255 EXCEPT when n=42 ... "00" is returned not "2A"! Truly an outright bug! VB up to and including .NET 2005 does this.
Testing in .NET 2010, it appears that now when a string is the passed value parameter, just the format string is echoed back.Not really fixed but functionality removed sometime between 2005 and 2010 versions.
Knowing this, I simply use my own wrapper function in all VB versions to do the formatting:

To pad leading zeros to number string. Could be done many ways, this is just one primitive one.

Jan 13, 2011The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings.However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.

Application.Settings VB 2005 - Save Arrays Using The Settings System Object
Jan 14, 2009I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..

I have several List(of Class) items as public properties and when I click on the design time menu (while testing the control) there is the word "Collection" and a button with an ellipsis (...) that brings up a neat pop up with the buttons Add/remove and all of the public properties of the collection's class on the right hand side. Basically for a non-collection instance of a class (with public properties) I'd like a similar button to show up. I know I could put all of the properties in the main control class and group them, but I like the pop up box feature. Anyway to duplicate this? (think font grid item etc.)

Mar 5, 2012In the form design I set up a TableLayoutPanel, 20x20 cells and in cell (1,1) a PictureBox (called Target) containing the image of a small target. The properties box for Target shows some very promising properties, Column and Row - and if you overwrite the values in the properties box, the PictureBox obligingly shifts to the corresponding cell position in th design. However in VB it is not possible to refer to Me.Target.Row or .Column - neither appears during coding in the menu of properties, and deliberately coding either of them produces an error like
Error 1 'row' is not a member of 'System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox'.
1. Why does the properties box show properties that cannot be altered programmatically?

Jan 16, 2009I'm working on a Hazardous Materials label printing program. One of the options is to do an "NFPA" label. Since there are 4 values required with 4 or 6 options, the ratings are entered via radio buttons in a group box. That's working okay. I display values in the NFPA diamond as they're entered: left quadrant blue, top quadrant red, left yellow, bottom red. I'm having trouble with the label in which the rating will be displayed on top of a jpg diamond for the white. In this quadrant the text can be up to 4 characters. I can accept the text going into an adjacent block a little, but the corners of the label overlap into another quadrant/color. I reduced the font size which solved the overlap problem but the font is then too small and looks terrible. I tried to make the background of the label transparent to let the color come through correctly but that's not a valid value for label.background. I'm figuring that the transparent background is the best solution. What can I use that will accept a transparent background so the color shows through?
I'm trying to set the transparent property via label properties properties, not via code. Here's the code if it makes any difference:

Apr 7, 2010it is possible to create dynamic settings using My.Settings.For example, a person clicks "Add User"The program then creates the settings for that user, it creates User(DYNAMICNUMBER)FN, and User(DYNAMICNUMBER)LN. Where Dynamic number is the next user for no conflicts in the settings. Is this possible? So that you can save multiple users for example?
