I have developed an application in VB.NET. Now I wanted to know how can we create automatic testing for this application. If VB.NET doesnt suppourt this , then can you tell me the best way to go ahead for testing the application.

I really love the product.I am 99% done but am hung up on a Publish issue.I know the Publish feature is not a full install program - but it handles downloading the application prerequisits so well I really want to use it.My problem is the Install path. It installs my application is the strrangest drectory appdatalocal 615252-191891-919 (goes on for ever)
I can set the install directory to something simpler. Would love to get it in Program Files but will settle for AppData if it can be a reasonable directory name. If I have to tell a customer to look in that directory for some reason I would have to read off about 60-70 alpha numeric characters for the directory path - that isn't feasable.

View 2 RepliesI have developed a windows application which performs a series of database operations like select, insert, update. I am connecting to Oracle database and its working fine in development system. But, when I deployed this application, I am getting error at StartConnection (which opens the DB connection). After installing OracleClient in client system, its working fine. Now, my question is that do I need to install OracleClient to every user? If so, it will be hectic to do so as its size is around 200 MB and its not possible to ask all the users to install it just for a small application. I have tried adding some OracleClient files like orannzbb11.dll, oraciei11.dll, iraops11w.dll etc. But in vain! Could anyone please suggest me a work-around or a way to accomplish this?

Now problem is on windows 7 it generate a warning message on installation of software that "The publisher is unknown", but the software install well on continue of this warning.When I run the software it did connect to Access database which is on installation directory, but it didn't allow to insert or update any data in the database. I am using the web browser control to generate screenshots of an intranet application developed in ASP.NET.
The screenshot is generated, compressed and then stored as a BLOB in the database. When I developed this facility I investigated the best way of compressing the image (to the lowest byte size), however the images still seem to be too big as the database table is growing larger than I hoped. I am using the TIFF format, but I am now thinking that this may not be the best as it is used by photographers (who I assume require good quality photographs). Let me describe the scenario:Our VB.NET web application talks to a third party data provider via webservices. It also saves data in a HUGE SQLServer database which has extensive business logic implemented in stored procs and triggers. The webservice provider also employs convoluted business logic which is quite dynamic.
The dilemma is that both the webservice provider and the sqlserver are essentially live systems and our company has no access to them outside of normal operations (web and SQL calls). Neither offer helpful support on their end.Additionally, the webservice has no 'test mode' and all calls are treated as live transactions. It is not possible to mimic the logic in either of these systems, nor is it possible getting a copy of the sqlserver DB.
So, my question is:How do you do any kind of testing (manual or automated) of our VB.NET application against these live systems?

1-Some graphics editing programs have what i think is called a filter/effects chain. its where you make a list of filters and settings that the program runs to edit the image.
2-In yahoo pipes you take small parts and use them to complete tasks for you mashup (like pulling all the images returned in a search and displaying them).
The system i want advice on is basically a plugin chain system modeled after these 2 idea's where the user selects plugin's and forms a chain out of them.for instance if i wanted to display a picture then i would form a chain of plugins like this

The code for the task's will of course be in the plugin's.The problem is i have never done any plugin system before. the hardest part i need help with is getting the plugin's loaded and sending the output's to each other. Also another problem i think is that the plugin's could be for anything (parsing text, displaying a picture, opening a url, downloading a file, etc, etc)Again I'm not asking for code just advice and some useful links to information.
I just want to inquire if it's possible to create a program that can lock not only the application but the whole system(PC)? What I want is that, if my application wasn't used within a specified time frame, it will automatically olock the whole computer and it can only be unlocked by a password.

User experience is imperative to an application's success, so ensuring the proper functionality of each feature is important. This discussion is to provide a step-by-step process that will help us to test our applications. It shall present testing best practices and highlight the common issues to avoid.There are many tools available for testing. I know some of them which I am going to mention below. I request msdn.com team and members to reply to this post and add some more points or tools that will help us.
a. Make sure design and page layout is consistent
b. Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes
c. Make sure the messages (alert, error, etc) are having no spelling or grammatical mistakes and are consistent.
Validate Functionality
a. Make sure all the form validations are done correctly. A program that is not robust will fail if you try wrong inputs like keeping the fields blank, inputting characters in place of numerics, -ve values where +ve is expected, large number of characters, etc.
b. Make sure the functionality desired from the page is complete in all aspects. For example, a page that is supposed to insert/update employee details does so correctly.
Prepare a test case document where you document test.In this document you simply write down the steps that you will perform to execute a test case, and results of test case execution. Complete test cases for the entire application in a similar manner.
I'm wanting to develop what I perceive to be a pretty simple application. I want something that runs in the system tray that tests for the presence of a particular file on a network drive. If the file does not exist, the icon in the system tray is a green circle (like a traffic light).If the file DOES exist, then the system tray icon is a yellow circle (caution), until the user clicks it (the yellow system tray icon), and a record is written to another file, then the system tray icon changes to a red (stop) circle until that first file we tested for is gone.I'd also like to create "balloon messages" to go with the changes in the system tray icon.

My understanding is the user must enter 32 digits into a textbox. The textbox should place limitations that only allow the digits "0" and "1". This error could be displayed to the user with a messagebox that then asks to reset the value orginally inputted into the textbox. I'm looking into adding some unit tests for some classes in my data access layer and I'm looking at an update routine that has no return value.It simply updates a row based on the id you provide at whichever column name you provide.Inside of this method, we collect the parameters and pass them to a helper routine which calls the stored procedure to update the table.Is there a recommended approach for how to do unit testing in such a scenario?
View 4 RepliesI need to create a notification system for my application that will alert the user once new items have been sent to their queue, which is made of up database entries. The latter part of this question may need to be asked in the database forum, but I guess we'll figure that out First, since I haven't created anything like this before, I need some direction on what the best possible solution would be.The notification system should always be running and work independently of the main app. With this requirement, I thought a Windows Service would be best.
The notification itself will just be a quick form that alerts the user. I'm sure most of that will be fairly easy to create. The only issue I'm wondering about is how to constantly check the database and determine a new record has been inserted.Would a windows service have a timer or something that allows me to constantly check?If it does, how would I determine a new record has been inserted?

So although we have plenty of keys from our subscription, to minimize tracking and confusion we just want to use2 or them over and over as we install, test, extended test, wipe and reload. Eventually we would have to recycle any way. I agree that for domain model code that using the "traditional" unit testing approach makes the most sense as this would lead to a design that is easiest to maintain. However, for code that deals with the .net implementation of Windows API related stuff (file system, services, etc), is there really an advantage to going thru the extra work to get "traditionally" testable code?
It's hard for me to see the disadvantages of using Microsoft Moles for things such as ServiceController (or the File object). I really don't see any advantage of doing the traditional approach in this case.

I'm building an Active Directory wrapper in VBNET 2.0 (can't use later .NET) in which I have the following:

IGroupe
IUniteOrganisation
These interfaces are implemented in internal classes (Friend in VBNET), so that I want to implement a faƧade in order to instiate each of the interfaces with their internal classes. This will allow the architecture a better flexibility, etc.Now, I want to test these classes (Utilisateur, Groupe, UniteOrganisation) in a different project within the same solution. However, these classes are internal. I would like to be able to instantiate them without going through my faƧade, but only for these tests, nothing more.
