IDE :: Program Properly Handles Try/Catch/End Try Blocks?
Jan 17, 2012
While running an application in the IDE, the program properly handles Try/Catch/End Try blocks. This works fine for the most part, but is it possible to have errors generated in these blocks stop execution at the line with an error on encountering an error?
What is the convention in VB when a sub requires that a try/catch block succeed in order to function, but the catch block doesn't bubble the exception up?
I could put all of the code into the try block, but this seems messy since most of it doesn't need to be tried, it just needs the try to have succeeded.
For example, should the catch block exit the sub? This would work in my current situation, and if it is the proper procedure, let me know, but what about the more general scenario where both both success and failure require additional processing?
I am handling errors via my global.asax in this method:
Dim CurrentException As Exception CurrentException = Server.GetLastError() Dim LogFilePath As String = Server.MapPath("~/Error/" & DateTime.Now.ToString("dd-MM-yy.HH.mm") & ".txt") Dim sw As System.IO.StreamWriter = New System.IO.StreamWriter(LogFilePath)
[code]....
In my code I currently have no other error handling. Should I still insert try, catch, finally blocks?
i'm Trying to make a Program that Blocks / unblocks websites. With 2 buttons.one button with : ( block website ) and one with : ( unblock website )And one listbox, where i add the sites i want to block.if the site is blocked the color is "Red" if its not blocked the color is "green"?
I am trying to end a program immediately when a critical exception is caught. But I am finding that code after my Try/Catch block is executing even though the code withing the Catch block is executing, and that Catch code is calling Me.Close.
I suspect it has something to do with background .net threads or something, but I have no clue how to deal with those kinds of issues. How can I stop the program as quickly as possible? If code after my Catch executes, it will (and does) throw lots of uncaught exceptions later. Currently, it is not feasible for me to try to catch all the other exceptions. I just want to report an error and end the program. In my form load routine, I create and set up a number of objects and arrays by calling various subroutines. The success of most of the subroutines depends on the sucess of three subs in particular, which are called early on. If one of those three fails, there will undoubtedly be a number of hard to trap exceptions later on in the load routine.
Is there a way to catch ALL errors of the program?
Purpose: The idea is to catch all the errors of the program, load errorform which basically just says "A Error Was Detected" (Which I have already designed). Then send a web request to a formmail.php file with the said error (which i have already done).
In short: I need a way to catch ALL errors, and get the error string that it gave.
Is it possible to intercept any program write (to file/registry) commands and prompt the user to allow, while pausing the other program's command? Antivirus thing. I know, this seems impossible. But there must be a way! Even if it's just possible to notice what's happening and save another copy of the to-be-affected file first...
i need a way to be sure that one of my programs ALLWAYS receives data from a handheld scanner. The logic to process the recieved data is already in place. I need to be sure to receive the data from a certain usb-port at all times.
I have a program in VB.Net that receives mails from Outlook, extracts attachments and inserts the attachments into a table through a query. I would like to put the query/queries in a Try/Catch block, but cannot do so as Outlook exceptions cannot be caught, and it gives me an error, and unless I put a very specific exception, I cannot catch it. Is there a workaround?
Edit:
Try Catch ex As Exception End Try
Exception is underlined and when I hover on it, it says: "Catch cannot catch type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Exception' because it is not in 'System.Exception' or a class that inherits from 'System.Exception'". This is affecting all my other code which I'd like to put into a Try/Catch block.
The following code causes a "Warning" that Variable is used before value assigned. How do I restructure this Try/catch to eliminate error on the myreader.close command in the Catch part? Code appears to work fine but I dont like Warnings. [code]
i have problem when i click a ADD button, there is one null value in the textbox .. so the try catch statemnt is to catch that null value error but after that the catch is success but the button click never stop excute the statemnt till the end of the button event.
I have this scenario: in a Sub I have a Try...Catch statement.Within that Try..Catch I call another sub.In that 2nd sub is also a Try...Catch.(see below for example). Now if an exception occurs in the 2nd sub's Try...Catch, which Catch gets excecuted? The 2nd one, the 1st one or both?
I was trying to make a program which displays two chars A and B on the screen. Using the WASD keys, it lets you move the A char around and using the arrow keys it lets you move the B char around.
I wrote the following:
Module Module1 Dim Box_A(1), Box_B(1) As Byte Dim Allow_Draw As Boolean
[Code].....
When I run the program, if I press any of the WASD or arrow keys the corresponding char doesn't move. To make it move, I have to hold down any of its keys for a bit after which I can move the char just by pressing its keys. But then, I have to do the same for the other char.
So, if I want to move B I have to hold any of the arrow keys for a bit. Then I can easily move B just by pressing any arrow key once. Then to move A I have to hold any of the WASD keys for a bit and then I can move A just by pressing any WASD key once.
Is there any way I make make each of the char move just by pressing its ket once?
So I made this neat little clock program in smallbasic and i downloaded visual studio 2008/visual basic 2010 yada yada.I clicked on graduate, made a folder under my documents to dump the stuff, finished installing, and then opened the project in VB.The SmallBasicLibrary couldn't be found
Such components as the GraphicsWindow wasn't converted to VB or something (probably because the library wasn't found).I followed Microsoft's instructions but I don't know what happened.
I am building a windows program that I need to link to add and pull information from an access 2007 database. I really so not want to use SQL if at all possible.
When I attempt to run a program I just finished coding I get the following message: "Error 1 Handles clause requires a WithEvents variable defined in the containing type or one of its base types." Looked it up online and still does not make sense to me. If I need to paste code or anything else let me know and I will do so ASAP.
I am making a program that takes pictures of the webbrowser control on a set timer and save them in a picturebox.. I then use backgroundworkers to check the images against others stored in the program. My issue is, the backgroundworkers do not properly check the images against the ones I have stored in the program.Could this be because the images and picturebox are stored on the main thread, and no in a background worker? In other words, I am taking picture from my webbrowser and putting them in my picturebox. Then, I am comparing them with images already in the images. The only problem is, the workers are unable to properly compare the images.
I am looking for a code snippet which opens a image, creates a clone of this bitmap in memory disposes this opened image so that all handles are closed.
Usually we can open a bitmap using this[code...]
the following code however keeps the Image File locked until the application is running, any suggestions how to dispose it properly. (So that no handle is left open )
Things i already tried: use dispose method of bitmap <= doesnt work (need to write implementation) Using Block also doesnt work.
I need to catch log4net exceptions (its own exceptions not app exceptions logged by it). I wish there's a way of doing it this way: [code] I have this code implemented and there's no errors in compilation but i force log4net to have an error (pointing to a non existing database in the config file) and nothing is threw.I've tried the listener aproach: [code] and it's writing the errors to log4net.txt, the forced ones i mean. This last aproach has a couple of drawbacks: it won't append every error to the file, if the error is the same it doesn't write it, i can't get the listener to write every error to that file, only one (I don't know how to fully configure the trace listener, it might be that). Thus it won't append the date and hour to every line wich is a necesity for me. Finally i can't give structure to it (xml). Even if the listener work i need to use the try/catch aproach, since i'm using ExceptionHandling from Enterprise library to log the errors in my app.
I'm trying to make a program of mine into a multithreaded application, but I've hit a pair of snags that I documented in the following code. I can expand this stub into a more efficient version of my existing application.
End A statement which as far as i know doesn't close you program properly and hides errors. Right now i'm being forced to use end because i don't know how else to close my program properly. I'm not sure where my problem is but some of you should be able to fix it. I'm trying to make a game using directx with a game loop. This code is the skeleton of what i'm making.
Public Class Form1 Private ProgRunning As Boolean = True
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Me.Show() 'Make the form appear Me.Focus() 'Give the form focus
[CODE]...
This code runs alright because end is being used but if you rem end out the error which it's hiding comes out. The error is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I'm not totally sure but i'm guessing that the error is refering to the form.
I started this tutorial on sub procedures and am having trouble trying to get this program to execute properly. The problem lies with the total. I am trying to figure out the math part of it. When I hit F5 I can see this
Item Quantity Price.
Pizza Slices Fries Soft Drinks
Total
But I can't get them to add up and display the quantity and price. I tried the ByVal and ByRef code but am not sure if I did it right
Here is the code that I have so far:
Public Class Form1
Private Sub btnCompute_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCompute.Click
I am using VB.NET 2005 to create a Windows forms application. I have a procedure named SendMail that creates an instance of Outlook.Application, to send an email from my application. I found the code on this forum, I think. The procedure works fine, but I can't use error handling with it.I call the procedure from a button click event. I put the procedure call in a try/catch block, and the application won't build, with the following error.
Error 68 'Catch' cannot catch type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Exception' because it is not 'System.Exception' or a class that inherits from 'System.Exception'. C:datadevdmtiQTSQTSv7_1_20100212wQTSQTSReportsCriteria pt_frmReportViewer.vb 43 21 QTS
Here is the code:
Sub SendMail(ByVal sFile As String) ' Create an Outlook application. Dim oApp As Outlook._Application
i have a try catch set up in my program and a message box that comes after the "End Try". when the message box pops up when an exception is thrown right after the second message box shows how do i stop this from happening?
i am making a Reflector,I want Some help with generating Blocks of Code(Loops,Branching, using Blocks,Switch Case Blocks etc).Until now i am able to convert IL to expressions and identifying startoffset and endoffset of a Code Block for Generating Code Blocks..The Trouble i am facing is Identifying the Initializer, Incrementer and Condition in a For Next Loop. which are contained between the StartOffset and EndOffset as Expressions.
