I have recently started playing with sockets, so now i have set up an instant messaging app. it works like it's supposed to however, theres a slight problem. short of arranging for both parties to come online via email or something there's no way for the other person to know that someones waiting for them. So i'm basically looking for a way to send a pop-up message to tell the other dude to get his ass online,is there a way to display a message on a target pc's screen without a client application running and actively listening for an incoming command?

I can either get "Input string not in correct format" or "typecast not valid". But this is simply supposed to be routine to run into and be able to handle. but that stupid error message keeps popping up I've heard of JITDebugging, should I use that?
Is there anyway to catch or display the request failed with an empty response message somewhere other then in a message box, for a example in a text box? Catch request failed with an empty response message
View 9 RepliesHere's my situation: I'm tryring to build a very simpe minigame in which the player has to pursuit and catch certain figures on the screen. This figures are currently showed as images on PictureBox wich i pass ByRef to some classes where the movement subrutines are. I have all the graphics in PNG, with transparent background, format and they look fine on the background, but when 2 or more of this figures are over the same place on the screen every PictureBox covers the underlying figure, so all i can see is one figure over the background.I was wondering if theres a way to solve this... Maybe using more powerfull libraries or something like that.

View 1 RepliesI never got into detailed error processing too much when I played in VBA/VB6 a lot. Mostly then, if you ran into a user error (such as some input of theirs failing a validation test of some kind), you popped a MsgBox() with some error information and the critical (or warning) icon, and safely aborted out of the code
In .NET, my reading basically points to exceptions as the end-all in error handling. It looks to me that if you know a spot of code where a user can screw up, you're supposed to catch it with either try...catch blocks (for things like data conversions), or standard if...the...else constructs for other things, and then throw a new exception if needed.
Isn't throwing an exception essentially a forced crash of a program in a sense (granted, you get the option of continuing)? Or are exceptions geared specifically for things like data conversion errors and other "things that shouldn't happen", and resume use of MsgBox() and friends for minor user screwups?
Consider the case of where you have a TextBox that is only supposed to accept numeric data (or heck, just a specific set of characters). Barring some other trick that lets you restrict that field (let's just assume it's freeform, programatically), it would seem a bit of a waste to throw new exceptions everytime they type in an invalid character, or even if the error checking doesn't happen until they press a submit button (like on a webpage). Popping a MsgBox() seems more sane in that case.
So what's the straight dope on exceptions and throwing new ones on user errors? How about if your program also exposes a programmatic framework? Bad usage of one of the programmatic functions definitely seems like new exception territory to me.
I designed a application on vb.net 2005. Some of the forms in this application has databindings controls. Now when such forms loads it takes some time. I want a splash screen containg "Please wait" message to appear till the form loads and the wait splash screen would be shown for every several forms in the application not only before the start up form.

I am using a CheckedListBox that is populated with Filenames (full path, i.e. C:TestTest.jpg)When I have the files that I want in the CheckedListBox I wish to click a Start Button which will process the list one at a time using an exe program that runs on the Command Line. There are arguments that need to pass to the command line as well as the file location in order for the program to process.I currently have it working but the issue is the loop finishes quickly and it is left up to the CMD.exe to finish the process. What I would like is for the LOOP to wait until each file completes processing before passing the command for the next file in the CheckedListBox.There some reasons I wish for it to work this way.
1) I would like to have a button that can Pause/Restart the Loop.
2) I would like to have a button that can Stop the Loop so the whole process can end.
3) I would like to have the Loop remove each file one by one from the CheckedListBox after it has been processed.
4) I would like to display a Message once all the files have been processed.
5) And if it were possible I would like to report the status either by text or a progress bar showing where it is at in the process.
6) And the ability to add some error handling if possible.
Since the Loop finishes so quickly as it just passes the command to the command line using the & as a seperator it is the command line that is handling the rest of the process. Because of this there is not control over it in the GUI.The code I am using allows the Command Line text to display in the Form so it won't open up a seperate window to run CMD.exe. This is the desired affect as I would like everything to appear to run from within the Form itself.

I wanted to make a screen recorder (not screen capture) program, but I am not entirely sure how to get it started. I have seen many videos and things on how to make one, but all of these just take multiple pictures and then don't compile them into a movie file, and I don't want to take many pictures (unless that is the only way possible.) I am using Visual Basic 2010 Express and I have looked at the Windows Media Encoder, but I can't seem to figure out how to use/implement it (yes, I have downloaded and installed it.) Maybe I can use some kind of ActiveX control?

I have an application with a SplashScreen. While loading the application, the application will check certain conditions and if the condition fails it throws a message window. I problem is when the message window is thrown it is displayed just behind the splashscreen and user is not able to see the message and unable to understand whats happening while the SplashScreen is displayed as it is till he clicks ok on the message box.

I want to display the exact information into the list box of my program instantly when it is displayed in the command prompt not after whole process is completed.
As in the ping google.com -t, I want to display the each reply message instantly in the list box.
I got this monitor that can turn 90 degrees & another program will rotate the display when it detects it has been rotated, I have a few questions though.
1.How can I detect when the monitor has been rotated (the monitor is hooked up via vga & no other cable goes to PC so I am guessing the message is sent across the vga cable).
2.How can I make it actually rotate the screen when the message is detected that the screen has been rotated?
I would download the other software but it's just some bulky & slow software for a small thing, windows has the ability for rotation built in, just not the auto rotation feature like the program, I just need to detect the message & make windows rotate the screen.
i am creating a system where when a command button is pressed, it adds the data corresponding to that command button to a Table of the screen. And basically im at my wits end at how to do this, i have tried using SQL and databases but all i seem to be able to do is type data into the table and this is not what i want.Basically the table has 3 columns at the moment, which are filled in column at a time, and this need to be done by pressing command buttons. To explain this basically there are 8 buttons, which can be pressed to enter into the first column, once one of these buttons is pressed and second set of buttons appear which correspond to the second column and after one of these buttons is pressed the 3rd set of buttons appears to enter into the third column.Once the last button is pressed that is the first row filled in and the user can again press a button from the first set. Its basically a system for rapidly entering data into this table through the corresponding buttons.I have the buttons appearing and all that working fine, but thats basically just the layout. I need to know how to enter the data into the table.i have to use a SQL database, i only added that as at the end of the session, the entire table of data needs to be added to a master database but i can attempt this at a later date.
View 12 RepliesI am trying to end a program immediately when a critical exception is caught. But I am finding that code after my Try/Catch block is executing even though the code withing the Catch block is executing, and that Catch code is calling Me.Close.
I suspect it has something to do with background .net threads or something, but I have no clue how to deal with those kinds of issues. How can I stop the program as quickly as possible? If code after my Catch executes, it will (and does) throw lots of uncaught exceptions later. Currently, it is not feasible for me to try to catch all the other exceptions. I just want to report an error and end the program. In my form load routine, I create and set up a number of objects and arrays by calling various subroutines. The success of most of the subroutines depends on the sucess of three subs in particular, which are called early on. If one of those three fails, there will undoubtedly be a number of hard to trap exceptions later on in the load routine.

Is there a way to catch ALL errors of the program?
Purpose: The idea is to catch all the errors of the program, load errorform which basically just says "A Error Was Detected" (Which I have already designed). Then send a web request to a formmail.php file with the said error (which i have already done).
In short: I need a way to catch ALL errors, and get the error string that it gave.
I have small lightswitch application having CreateNewUser Screen.Screen fields comes from Datatable added in DataSource, I have made all Validattion of fields at DataSource side. However i have added one Custom Control in the screen named : Re-TypePassword.Whenever user click on save button I want to match the Password and Re-TypePassword and want to prompt user a validation message if Password and Re-TypePassword are different.how can i display that validation massage ? ( I mean i want to add validation message to Summary of messages that appears at the top of screen)
