Display Message On Target Pc's Screen Without Client Application Running / Actively Listening For Incoming Command?

I have recently started playing with sockets, so now i have set up an instant messaging app. it works like it's supposed to however, theres a slight problem. short of arranging for both parties to come online via email or something there's no way for the other person to know that someones waiting for them. So i'm basically looking for a way to send a pop-up message to tell the other dude to get his ass online,is there a way to display a message on a target pc's screen without a client application running and actively listening for an incoming command?

I'm listening to a something coming in on a serialport every second. how to start an event if there is nothing coming in all of a sudden.

I'm in the process of upgrading my web pages from asp classic to asp.net.My previous code used CDO to send emails.[code]This code works fine but I'd like to send emails from my asp.net pages. When I send from the .net pages, I get the error message: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it xx.xx.xxx.xxx:2 " [code]I'm rather new to .Net but I've searched for hours and can not come up with a reason why the old code works but the new doesn't.

I have my tcplistener on port 5000, 127.0.0.1 as the ip and when i connect using my internal ip, 192.168.1.141 it "refuses the connection", same with the external but if i connect using 127.0.0.1 it works. how do i fix this?

I made 2 simple VB .Net applications.One is listening on a port and echoing received message to sender (server side), and the other sends messages to it (client side).When I run them both on my machine, everything goes fine.
The problem arised when I tried running each of them on different machines. The client throws an error : "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it"

How to make a chat program. Well I just copied code in and the program worked. I can send a message to the server and it sends it back just fine. But I can only send a message once. If I try to send another message I get an error and it says this "A first chance exception of type 'System.Net.Sockets.SocketException' occurred in System.dll" then it "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:500".

I want to refactor my existing application to work with as a client/server app, and was looking at introductions to Remoting.I got a simple system up and running 2 days ago, and haven't touched it since until just now, but now I'm getting an error message when trying to instantiate a class from the remoted DLL : "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it".The server and client are both actually running on the same machine for simplicity at the moment. I have three "applications" involved - a class library containing the server functionality, a listener application sitting with the server, and then a client applicaition.Most of the articles I can find online referring to this error seem to apply primarily to asp.net but I'm just using traditional vb.net (2008)I initially suspected the cause may be firewall related (as when I first got it running I was prompted to allow access) but I've turned off my McAfee firewall and also my Windows firewall with no joy, and besides - the error message seems to imply that communication with the server has been established but that it doesn't want to play ball.

I am trying to make a client server form application using VB2005. I am using VS2005 Professional for development.
The problem is as follows:
When more than one client tries to connect to the server. The connection is refused and the Client gets an exception in Connect() method - Target machine actively refused the connection.
This problem occurs only when 2 or more clients try to simultaneously connect to the server. For a single client accessing at a time the problem does not occur. The code segment is as given below:

I need to build a Windows Service in VB.net under Visual Studio 2003.This Windows service should read the flat file (Huge file of about a million records) from the local folder and upload it to the corresponding database table.This should be done in Rollback mode(Database transaction).While transferring data to table, the service should also be listening to additional client requests.So, if in between client requests for a cancel operation, then the service should rollback the transactions and give feedback to the client. This windows service also keeps writing continuously to two log files about the status and error records. My client is ASPX page (A website). how to organize and achieve this functionality in a windows service(Processing and listening for additional client requests simultaneously. Ex. I have an application with a SplashScreen. While loading the application, the application will check certain conditions and if the condition fails it throws a message window. I problem is when the message window is thrown it is displayed just behind the splashscreen and user is not able to see the message and unable to understand whats happening while the SplashScreen is displayed as it is till he clicks ok on the message box.

I get this error message when running an application developed in VB. It used to works fine but for some reason it was asking to update ODBC but after that it cannot read the dbf file any more. The error message is speicified driver could not be loaded due to system error 126 (Microsoft dBase Driver (*.dbf)).Even I installed this visualFoxProOledb.exe and also MDAC 2.8 it still doesn't work.

I have developed a windows application which connects to Oracle Database and upload and retrieve data (using System.Data.OracleClient). It is working fine in my developement system. When I build a setup and deploy in another system, it is giving error that Oracle Client is missing.
Do I have to install Oracle Client in the client system to run my application?
(When I visit Oracle site for Oracle Client, it is asking me to download a 200 MB file)
Is there any other way to do this with out installing Oracle Client in the client system?

I tried that by writing console.writeline("shutdown -s")
but all it dows it displays the text and does not shutdown the computer. How do I code that correctly???

I want to exit my GUI application (vb.net 4) using a commandline parameter.I should send thive! from the commandline:
myapplication.exe quit and an already running instance of the application should exit.
Now, I have a mutex detection in place so that I can only have one instance of the application running at a time. It seems that if I send a commandline, it won't work on an already running application; it will only work on one that is launching.

May i know how to insert a AT command method inside my program to receive incoming sms?
My program is in visual basic windows form 2005.
Here is how my program goes.
After i click connect button in my application, the gsm modem will automatically read the incoming sms and display in the textbox on the program.
I already have the list of AT commands to be used, they are :
1. AT
2.AT+CMGF=1
3.AT+CMGL="ALL"
I also would like to know how to declare these commands as string inside the program.

I have recently created an application where a lot of data is loaded into objects when the application starts up, and other data as it is required. For example if the user requests the catalogue page then it will load all the top level category data into objects of type Category. This will then stay there to be used by other users (who will therefore not have to load this data into objects) and can be altered by admin if they happen to login during the same application instance. I know this is not the most efficient solution, as pointed out below, but it works and the page load, at the moment, is not too long. It is very quick if most of the required data is already loaded into objects. It is also tailored to the business' needs - unlike other techniques such as Linq-to-SQL.
