Inheriting A Class With Useful Methods Or A Creating A Module?
Nov 27, 2009
What is neater / better in your opinion? Inheriting a Class with useful methods or a creating a module?
For example:
vb Module Tools_Module
Public Sub Print(ByRef text As String)
Console.WriteLine(text)
End Sub
End Module

When inheriting class or control e.g. ListView, TreeView, etc..., what is the best way to distinguish between built-in methods/property/events and mine?
Currently, i start my methods/property/events with "aa" in order to make them at the top of auto complete list.

I am not sure how clear my question is by the title, but I am trying to make Class methods instead of Instance methods in Visual Basic that way I don't have to waste memory and code creating temporary objects to execute methods that don't need instance variables.
I am not sure if you can do that in VB but I know you can in Objective-C by using either a "+" or "-" sign in front of the method declaration. And in C++ (at least I think, I can't remember) you put the static keyword or const keyword in front of the function.How would I do this in VB if it is possible? Or should I just make a separate set of functions that are not members of a class?

I have 2 business classes, user & salutation and 2 DAL classes of the same name.
The business classes both have properties of the data class E.g.
Public Property Data() As Data.Salutation
Get
Return _Data
[Code].....
To access some data, you would do Business.Salutation.Data.SalutationID
Both busines classes inherit from BaseClass which contains all my database access methods.
Is there a way that I can access the Data property of the inheriting classes from the BaseClass?
I assume I will need to use reflection as the property types will always be different.

I seem to be having a problem with controls that I am creating as new classes (not UserControls) inheriting from an existing system control. Everything seems ok while I create the control code, through to the compile (which is successful and adds the control to the toolbox) and dragging the control from the toolbox to the GUI surface. However, when I then debug or compile the project, I get a message such

I have a Class FileDoc Public Class FileDoc Inherits BaseClass
Public Sub DeleteDoc() dim catId as integer = Cat_ID
[Code]...
My question is, since FileDoc comes from the BaseClass, how can I access values from the BaseClass when I'm coding in the FileDoc Class. Like my example in sub DeleteDoc(), I'm trying to access the Cat_ID of the Base Class which this FileDoc belongs to.Adding an inheritance doesn't transfer the values to the class, only the properties.

In the code below (which I just wrote here - it closely mirrors what my actual code is...) the problem is with the line:
Thing.ThingObject.Add(MyObject)
It says: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" Yes - it is "nothing" before I try to use the Add method so I must be doing something basic and wrong.The object I am trying to add is fine - I can tell you it is correct, it's just that I apparently cannot use the .add method on the Thing.ThingObject until it is properly created - which I have apparently not done.
Private Sub DoThing()
Dim MyObject as New Object
MyObject = MakeMyObject

In this project I am making a grade calculator; I am modifying an existing code I have to have the following characteristics: I need to modify the DetermineGrade method so that it accepts the maximum number of points that can be earned on both tests (currently, the max number of points is 200: 100 points per test). For an A grade, the student must earn at least 90% of the total number of points. For a B, the student must earn at least 80%. For a C, at least 70%. For a D, at least 60%. If they earn less than 60% of the total points, then grade is F. Here is the exisint code I have for the DetermineGrade method specifically:
Public Sub DetermineGrade()
Dim intTotal As Integer
intTotal = _intScore1 + _intScore2

My boss has asked me to set up DotNetNuke's Survey Module and make a few custom changes to it for a client. But I'm having trouble just getting the bare-bones code to run properly!Downloaded both the source & install folders from [URL] Created a new VB Web Application Project Took out all the default pages Copied the Survey source code into the VB Web Application Project in exactly the same structure Made a batch script that creates an installation folder identical to DNN's install folder (double-checked by running a folder-diff on it, and all files/folders were identical) Zipped up my installation folder using 7-zip The source code compiles perfectly. But even though the files/folders are identical, DNN's zipped package will work properly on my DNN site, and my own zipped package will fail with this famous error message:
Error: Survey is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Survey.survey'. --->

I have a class definition that I've seen other define properties that return collections of objects.
Public Property GetAllAdults() as Adults End Property I made the argument that this should be a method in the class, because it doesn't define an attribute of the class, and could not be extended with parameters. Is/Are there reasons why this should be defined as a property vs. a function?

I have a database table called Job. I have mapped this table using LINQ to SQL so that I have a class called Job.
What I want to do is add some methods to the Job class. The Job class is defined in the LINQ to SQL classes .dbml file. So, in order to add methods, or anything else to the Job class what should I do?
Should I create a partial class named Job and define the methods in there? Will that then get mixed in properly? Not sure how to proceed on this one.

I have a function that 2 derived classes use, but the third doesn't, would it make sense to just leave it in the base class, even though one of the 3 derived classes doesn't use it?The only way I could think of disallowing the third class is to basically create an intermediate class that is derived of the base, then the 2 that use the common function are derived off the second class.
Is it possible to prevent the 3rd class from using the function, while letting the two that are supposed to use it, use it?Does that just seem to go overboard, I mean as long as I don't "try" to call the function from the 3rd class, it shouldn't be a problem, I just was interested if there was a way to prevent it all together without a lot of hassle.
