I have a situation in which I must execute a dynamically built stored procedure against tables that may, or may not be in the database. The data retrieved is then shunted to a VB.Net backed ASP based report page. By design, if the tables are not present in the database, the relevant data is automatically hidden on the report page. Currently, I'm doing this by checking for the inevitable error, and hiding the div in the catch block. A bit kludgy, but it worked.I can't include the VB code-behind, but the relevant stored procedure is included below.However, a problem with this method was recently brought to my attention when, for no apparent reason, the div was being hidden even though the proper data was available. As it turned out, the user trying to select the table in the dynamic SQL call didn't have the proper select permissions, an easy enough fix once I could track it down.First and foremost - is there a better way to check for a missing table than through catching the error in the VB.Net codebehind? All things considered, I'd rather save the error checking for an actual error. Secondly, is there a preferred method to squirrel out a particular OLE DB error out of the general object caught by the try->catch block other than just checking the actual stack trace string?
SQL Query - The main gist of the code is that, due to the design of the database, I have to determine the name of the actual table being targeted manually. The database records jobs in a single table, but each job also gets its own table for processing data on the items processed in that job, and it's data from those tables I have to retrieve. OVERVIEW:I am currently having an issue loading a large number of rows into Excel. I say large because the attached code in fact correctly inserts 50 rows into an Excel worksheet, however, as the number of rows increases to no more than500 rows the data is not inserted into the worksheet. No error is thrown by .net and the .xls filesize actually shows an increase in size, however, when the file is opened there are no rows in the spreadsheet..... Then, when the .xls file is closed the filesize is once again reduced.
Again, the code works for a small number of rows. Are there any known bugs with the OleDB driver for Excel?ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:I have tried inserting rows to both Excel 2003 and 2007, same issue.I have tried closing the connection after each insert.... performance if horrible and it does not fix the problem.I have wrapped the ExecuteNonQuery in a transaction.... no go....

Just wondering if i might hit a snag in my program. Ive got 10+ users using the same files, via a Oledb to put info into an excel spreadsheet. If 2 or more people save there file at the same time will the program go into read only on one person. Normally one 3 will use the file at one time. I know Sql itself would be better to use. best way i can describe it, normally using excel if you manage to open the same file twice one opens as normal but the other opens as a Read only file, will the same thing happen if im using Oledb connections?

View 2 RepliesI have a web page where I want users to enter ratings for a particular software. I have got this working fine. What I am after now, is that users need to be logged in to enter ratings. I have dragged the loginview control onto the page and dragged all the other controls/datasources into this view. However now I am getting alot of squiggly lines regarding my controls not being declared. I have been told that I need to use the FindControl method. However I'm not sure on how to use it in my instance as I have a dropdownlist involved.
The controls are called: LoginView1, DropDownList1, TextBox1 and Button1 for the insert.

I setup a strongly typed dataset using the DatasetDesigner in VB2010. I am using the TableAdapter.Insert method to add data to an Access table. Before the data is inserted I need to validate the data using the DataTable RowChanging event.
How can I get the DataTable RowChanging event to fire when using the TableAdapter.Insert method?

I need to explicitly load my data source variables and then call the insert method associated with the data source. The sample VB .net code is listed below. So is it sufficient for me to just call the Insert() method when I am ready to insert my values? Or do I need to create an insert event? You see if I look at the properties window for the data source, there is a lightning bolt icon that will generate events for the data source such as Insert,Inserting,Disposing,Init,Load etc.

May i know how to insert a AT command method inside my program to receive incoming sms?
My program is in visual basic windows form 2005.
Here is how my program goes.
After i click connect button in my application, the gsm modem will automatically read the incoming sms and display in the textbox on the program.
I already have the list of AT commands to be used, they are :
1. AT
2.AT+CMGF=1
3.AT+CMGL="ALL"
I also would like to know how to declare these commands as string inside the program.

This code is for the user to click on connect button which will connect to the serial port. So after connecting the modem will then auto read and display new incoming sms.
I have been struggling with getting FormViews to work the way Microsoft expects me to for about a day and have figure a bunch of great stuff out.
I can catch e.Exception and e.ReturnValue in the ObjectDataSource.Inserting Event Handler and I can even cheat and check other properties of the Object in the ObjectDataSource.ObjectDisposing by checking the e.ObjectInstance ... and I even learned that FormView's Inserting Handler Runs AFTER the ObjectDisposing Handler so If there is a problem found I still have time to react to it and st the e.KeepInInsertMode to true on the FormView.
My problem is, it seems that the values entered by the user into the Insert form are cleared regardless.
So, How do I Prevent a FormView from clearing after it's Insert Method has fired?
(Using ASP.NET + VB)
I don't think posting my code here will really do much good and i would have to modify it to trim out confidential business logic stuff... so I'll skip it for now.

I have found a temporary and admittedly terribly cludgy solution (in case no one ever finds a REAL solution to the problem).
I have a page variable defined as:

The effect of this is that I am setting the values BACK to the submitted values AFTER ASP.NET binds the FormView to the default (blank) Template.

In frmBase i want to create a method Called StartWorking() and i want frmChild to inherit this method.
But here is the tricky thing: when frmChild.StartWorking is called i would like the following => without calling MyBase.StartWorking()
I want frmBase.StartWorking() to be executed first and after a test in frmBase.StartWorking if blnValue is true then frmChild.StartWorking has to be activated. if blnValue is false that frmChild.StartWorking cannot be activated.
