Catch DataTable RowChanging Event When Using TableAdapter.Insert Method

Apr 19, 2011

I setup a strongly typed dataset using the DatasetDesigner in VB2010. I am using the TableAdapter.Insert method to add data to an Access table. Before the data is inserted I need to validate the data using the DataTable RowChanging event.

How can I get the DataTable RowChanging event to fire when using the TableAdapter.Insert method?

Here is an excerpt of code I have so far:

When the Insert method runs, it does not fire the datatable RowChanging or NewRow events.

Imports System.Data.OleDb

Tableadapter.fill(datatable) Fills The Row That Was Not Added To The Datatable

Aug 6, 2010

I am trying to add NewRow to the database by using datatable in dataset, but before I do that I want to make sure that row is not already there. I create new row for the datatable I am working with, fill it with information. I fill datatable with the row from database that has the same primary key as my NewRow by using tableadapter.fill method, but when I do that my NewRow that was never added to the datatable is filled with information from database(and not information that I assigned to it). I count rows in my datatable before I fill it and it's 0, so why is my NewRow affected by Fill command? (I am using VB.NET 2005 Framework 2.0)

Explicit Call To The Data Source .Insert() Method/event?

May 28, 2009

I need to explicitly load my data source variables and then call the insert method associated with the data source. The sample VB .net code is listed below. So is it sufficient for me to just call the Insert() method when I am ready to insert my values? Or do I need to create an insert event? You see if I look at the properties window for the data source, there is a lightning bolt icon that will generate events for the data source such as Insert,Inserting,Disposing,Init,Load etc.

Protected Sub btnSave_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Me.SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters.Add("@Title", "Mr.")

DataTable Isn't Recognized By TableAdapter

Oct 23, 2009

I would like to start a data base. Im using vb2005. I've started a new windows application. I have added a new data source to the project. Then I added a new TableAdapter in the dataSet.xsd part of the project. When I'm completeting the wizard, when I click on the QueryBuilder, when the add table window opens, the table already in the program ( that comes along with the TableAdapter ) isn't recognized. I've clicked on the refresh button but it still isn't recognized. (example: DataTable1 isn't recognized in the add table form in the query biulder of DataTable1TableAdapter)

TableAdapter Does Not Insert New Records?

Oct 6, 2009

I have a program that is using a dataset class, table adapter, binding source and binding navigator. The program can read, update, and delete rows from the table. However, it doesn't recognize new records and save them to the database when the table adapter's update method is called. (table was pre-populated by another process) The database table is using an identity column for the primary key. On a whim I added code to force an insert of data using the table adapter's Insert method with some hard coded values and this worked. This code was invoked after hitting new record on the binding navigator bar. Looking at the database, I notice the record I forced in skipped an identity value, which indicates to me hitting new record took the previous number. So the question I have is what would keep the tableadapter from inserting the new record when its update method is called?

VS 2008 TableAdapter.Update Method, Not Available In IntelliSense?

Jul 7, 2011

I have a TableAdapter I created in the DataSet designer. It contains joined tables and I set it up to automatically generate Insert/Update/Delete commands. I understand that I have to write my own UpdateCommand. I did so, in the DataSet Designer, for this particular TableAdapter.

The issue is that the Update Method is not showing up via IntelliSense, when I attempt to write code like this:

vb.net Dim x as Integer = Me.DPTableAdapter.Update(), IntelliSense does not show the Update Method with the parameters I set up.I created the same exact method with another TableAdapter, in the same manner, and it worked just fine.

I also call EndEdit on the BindingSource, I just did not put it in this post.

Use TableAdapter To Insert Rows Into A Dataset Does Not Do Anything

Mar 21, 2011

I have a question similar to this one, but reading the (accepted) answer didn't give me much insight, so I'm hoping to state it more clearly and get a clearer response back.

I'm attempting to insert a data row into a table. I'm using TableAdapter's custom "insert nonQuery" that I wrote (it works, I tested) to accept some parameters. I'm fairly new to this business of communication with a database via .NET and what I'm doing is probably wrong by design. My questions are why is it wrong and what's the right way to do it? Both are equally important, IMO.[code]...

And I configured the TableAdapter exactly as shown by Beth, yet I am getting an error here:

Me.OrderDetailsTableAdapter.Update(newOrderDetailsRow) The Error says: "You must enter a value in the 'OrderDetails.CustomerID' field."

I am using this code for inserting a related record:

Namespace MyDataSetTableAdapters

I am not able to insert and move on as I am getting the error marked above.

What could be possibly wrong with the above code and why is this giving an error ?

Preferred Method To Catch Specific OleDB Error

Jan 4, 2010

I have a situation in which I must execute a dynamically built stored procedure against tables that may, or may not be in the database. The data retrieved is then shunted to a VB.Net backed ASP based report page. By design, if the tables are not present in the database, the relevant data is automatically hidden on the report page. Currently, I'm doing this by checking for the inevitable error, and hiding the div in the catch block. A bit kludgy, but it worked.I can't include the VB code-behind, but the relevant stored procedure is included below. However, a problem with this method was recently brought to my attention when, for no apparent reason, the div was being hidden even though the proper data was available. As it turned out, the user trying to select the table in the dynamic SQL call didn't have the proper select permissions, an easy enough fix once I could track it down.First and foremost - is there a better way to check for a missing table than through catching the error in the VB.Net codebehind? All things considered, I'd rather save the error checking for an actual error. Secondly, is there a preferred method to squirrel out a particular OLE DB error out of the general object caught by the try->catch block other than just checking the actual stack trace string?

SQL Query - The main gist of the code is that, due to the design of the database, I have to determine the name of the actual table being targeted manually. The database records jobs in a single table, but each job also gets its own table for processing data on the items processed in that job, and it's data from those tables I have to retrieve. Absolutely nothing I can do about this setup, unfortunately. [code]

Checking For Duplicate Row In DataSet.RowChanging?

Feb 7, 2012

I am using the DataSet to test for data errors on a DataGridView (to give the user feedback before they save changes back to the database). RowChanging event has the code at the bottom and this manages error messages on the DGV via an ErrorProvider. I want to add something to this code that esnures there are no duplicate rows (it's a 2 column table and one of those is the autoincrement PK). However I cannot work out how to do this and since the column in the database is set to Indexed (No Duplicates) it will throw an Ole error if I don't handle it, I could manage it in a Try block around TableAdapter.Adapter.Update but would prefer not to add needless round trips to the DB when it really ought to be simple to do it in the code (and preferably in the DataSet, not the form).

I found the following code (Forum Post) and try as I might I can't make it work since I can't get access to a DataTable within the RowChanging event that allows me to run DataTable.Rows.Find().

Dim expression as String
Dim matchingRow as DataRow
matchingRow = Mytable.Rows.Find(expression)

In my case:Mytable would be some kind of reference to the table / dataset etc.

'expression' would be e.Row.compclass.ToString

* a reference to the database table the form works with (bearing in mind that this code is in the DataSet not in the form). I've tried properties/methods of the DataSet itself; creating a new DataTable and linking it to the DataSet Table (or DB Table); creating
a new DataTable and loading it with the table contents - Searching MSDN and the forums hasn't popped anything up yet.I'm currently experimenting around this code:

Dim strCompClass As String = e.Row.compclass.ToString
strCompClass.Trim()
Dim foundRow As DataRow = ???.Rows.Find(strCompClass)

[code]....

This is the current code in the RowChanging event. The new code would be inserted after the last End If in the code below.

Private Sub ref_compclassDataTable_ref_compclassRowChanging(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As ref_compclassRowChangeEvent) Handles Me.ref_compclassRowChanging
If e.Row.HasErrors Then

Event Causing Error - Cannot Catch Exception

Apr 22, 2010

A developer has created a custom control in ASP.NET using VB.NET. The custom control uses a repeater. In certain scenarios, the rpt_ItemDataBound event is encountering a data error. My goal is rather than having the user see the yellow screen of death, give the user a friendlier error explaining exactly what the data error is. I figured I would be able to use a Try/Catch block as shown below throw the exception, however, it appears that the event has nowhere to be thrown to and stops executing at the "End Try" line.

Protected Sub rpt_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeaterItemEventArgs) Handles rpt1.ItemDataBound, rpt2.ItemDataBound
Try
ProcessBadData...
Catch ex As Exception
Throw ex
End Try
End Sub

In VB.NET, I can find where the repeater's DataSource is being set, however, I can not find a DataBind event. How I can capture the exception in this ASCX control so I can report it to the user. The stack trace looks like this. There is another repeater within the repeater that is actually causing the error (rptOther) and I'm able to catch the error, but I can only throw it to the rpt_ItemDataBound. How rpt_ItemDataBound is getting called without a DataBind event.
