Make An Application A Managable Service?
Feb 18, 2011
I made a client/server application and I want the server application to be a service that can have it's setting managed through a GUI.I know how to make an application a service, but how would I give it the ability to have its settings changed and start/stopped through GUI?Or would you just make a program that can edit a certain server's config files and just restart it to pick up the changes?

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

I am working on a project and the code for FORMS1.vb has become quite large, 20K lines. How can I break this down into more managable pieces. I have tried Modules but I get multiple reference errorsd when I move like all of the reporting code to a module. The report code has nothing to do with the forms other than being able to call that code from an object on the form.

I have a class with a lot of methods. This class and methods are in one file. These methods can be put into 3 groups based on the things that they can be used for. What would be a good way to break these methods up into the 3 groups? I was thinking about doing a partial class definition and breaking up these methods into 3 files.

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and .NET3.5. I've created a WCF service application. I'm including two DLLs that contain the types I'm returning. The first method I wrote works both in WCF Test Client and also in a console application I created to test. When I move on to the next method that returns a generic list of a type. It works great in WCF Test Client, but when I update the service reference it acts as if the service is unavailable. All my objects say can't find reference, and I can no longer see it in the object browser. It's like it just disappears. I can still see it in the Service Reference folder. If I go back to the WCF app and comment out the contract and implementation of that one method it work again. I created a local class very similar to the class I'm using from the dll, and the it works. Is there something I'm missing here? Can someone point me in the right direction?

This is a bit of unusual problem that I'm experiencing, but recently one of the users of a production application started reporting errors in the system. These were traced to a 503 Service Unavailable error when making a call to a web service used by the application.
Now here's the odd part, only the one user is affected by this issue. Other users of the application have not reported any errors. When the user logged on to a different machine that worked for another user, they still received the error.

My employer has an in-house windows order-entry application which Ive written in VB6. I've taken a section of the VB code and made a stand-alone .exe that I can pass a parameter string to and get a different parameter solution string back. I put the stand-alone exe on the server and can access it from the app on my pc. It is all working fine for our windows needs.
Now my employer wants the stand-alone exe converted to a web service so it will work with our windows app plus our UNIX order-entry app. Both apps would be passing the same parameters to the web service and be able to use the same solution string coming back from the service. Does this sound doable?

I'm making an application that tracks jobs we log in our IT department and as I'm often out and about it would be handy to be able to use this app from my laptop and connect in to our server at our office. The problem is that a lot of the places I go block all outboundtraffic apart from port 80 and 443 (for HTTP and HTTPS). Now I know I could write an ASP.NET front end that I could just access over the internet but to be honest I just plain dont like making ASP.NET web pages and so if there is any way I could do this just through my standard desktop app that would be good.
I've heard a bit about "web services" and to me this sounds like a solution but I dont know enough about them to decide if I should use one or not.The main thing that will decide this is whether or not I can make this web service listen on port 80, is that possible? Also, is it hard work making something use HTTPS instead of HTTP so that the data is encrypted? I mean, do you have to do all of the encrypting yourself or is there some sort of automatic function you can use to handle this?

I am having a hard time figuring out how would my vb.net application to run as window service so that it would not appear in the task manager's processes list so that it can't be terminated and would constantly run in a background. Is there anyway we could make to run our vb.net application as Windows Service, programmatically? If not, could you provide me sample code that has this Windows Service that's constantly from time to time check whether my application is running or not? If not, then the Windows Service will rerun it for me.?

I created a very simple web service on my godaddy shared hosting web site, using VWD. I wrote a VB app to use some web services. I added a web reference to another web service with no problem. But I could not add a web reference to MY OWN web service. It was blocked by a Discovery Credential dialog that could not succeed. After days of communication with godaddy tech support they stated it could not be done (for security reasons).

I am creating a desktop application that uses a SQL database to store information about different movies. Instead of having to type in the information I want (Barcode code, DVD ID, Title etc.), I want to use a web service. However, I don't know any web services like this and I am new to trying to implement them. Can anyone suggest a good one and briefly tell me how to implement it into my app?

I have created a webcam application. It uses a PictureBox to display the image and saves the image to file via the clipboard. I've used code found on this forum and all works fine.
What I'd like to do now is to convert the application into a service.
I know how to create a service, but does the webcam image have to actually appear on the screen to save the image? My goal is not to have any forms display on screen, therefore conforming to typical service operation.

My project requires that a windows service checks up a table on a sql database(MDF) and if product existence is 0 then sends an email to some mail address and keep checking every 24 hrs.Now Im able to send mail messages but what Im not able is to make the service itself to work or at least make sure that is working.I do the following(correct me if I do something wrong or missing a step):
1. create a new project and choose windows service
2. add a timer and set to 4000 ms just to test not wait the 24 hrs lol
3. then open its event timer_elapsed and put some code on it, like a msgbox that would keep spamming every 4 secs just to test
4. at the event onstart I enable the timer by: timer1.enabled=true
5. at the event onstop I disable the timer by: timer1.enabled=false
6. right click then choose add installer
7. in the newer installed with the two objects:
a. serviceinstaller1 set its properties to: displayname: myservice and servicename: myservice
b. serviceprocessinstaller1 set account property to LocalSystem
8. build the project and install it by opening the VS console and type: "installutil c:path blah blahservice.exe" then hit enter
9. all successfull installed open the pc manager and run the service from the list and this should be the deal
Now my real problem is that by following those steps my service is sucessfully builded, installed, and started but after the 4 seconds no msg pops up so this leads me to think that is not doing anything or I did something wrong in the steps above. Is there another way to test if this service is working else than the msgbox or the log entry? Plus, Im working on my home pc which is a xp OS. I tried the same at college pcs wich are win7 and when I did install by the console it returned an error weird but in my home pc it doesnt(and I have to present my project at college at college and tomorrow

I am working on a Windows Service project that is supposed to start automatically with Windows and it has a timer to check if a certain process is created (in this case "iexplorer") the service should terminate that process. In addition, the user should not be able to stop the windows service.
I was able to create the process and make start with Windows. I changed the property (CanStop) to False but that did not help because after a few tries the servise stops. I used a For-Next loop in the timer to check for the process to terminate but unfortunatly, it didn't work. The code I used is:
Dim theProcesses() As Process = System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcessesByName("Iexplore")
For Each currentProcess As Process In theProcesses

No coding/compiling issues. I run the "installutil.exe" and I get a error ever time. So I went back and added the "Add Installer". But I am sure of what else I need to do, as I get the same error. I have created and deployed a windows service application and I added this line of code "System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Launch()" in the beginning of OnStart method in order to be able to debug the service but when I start the service the nothing is happened. I think the OnStart method have never fired otherwise the visual studio will popup once the debugger.launch line is executed even I tried to write some text to the event viewer to make sure but nothing gets written to the events viewer after I started the service. I included also the debugging symbol in my windows service setup project but I end up with the same result. Why it's not working? How can I make sure that the OnStart method gets fired or not?

I'm developing a program working with database. Id like to use the Service base database but it gives me an error when I try to add it in my project Project > Add new Item > Service-based database
I wanted to use this database so I could make a table in it.
Error:
Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) requires SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Pls verify of the component or download from the URL
go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251
But when i go to that site its just the vs express websites.
Im using VS2008 Pro. I also installed other files like SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU
Am I missing something that i need to install?
I already have "SQL Server Management Studio" listed in All Programs> Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Even the SQL Server Compact 3.5 is already installed
How will I know if I properly installed the required components or application?
