Make Web Service App?

Feb 6, 2009

My employer has an in-house windows order-entry application which Ive written in VB6. I've taken a section of the VB code and made a stand-alone .exe that I can pass a parameter string to and get a different parameter solution string back. I put the stand-alone exe on the server and can access it from the app on my pc. It is all working fine for our windows needs.

Now my employer wants the stand-alone exe converted to a web service so it will work with our windows app plus our UNIX order-entry app. Both apps would be passing the same parameters to the web service and be able to use the same solution string coming back from the service. Does this sound doable?

Service Reference Stops Working When Make Changes To WCF Service?

May 26, 2011

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and .NET3.5. I've created a WCF service application. I'm including two DLLs that contain the types I'm returning. The first method I wrote works both in WCF Test Client and also in a console application I created to test. When I move on to the next method that returns a generic list of a type. It works great in WCF Test Client, but when I update the service reference it acts as if the service is unavailable. All my objects say can't find reference, and I can no longer see it in the object browser. It's like it just disappears. I can still see it in the Service Reference folder. If I go back to the WCF app and comment out the contract and implementation of that one method it work again. I created a local class very similar to the class I'm using from the dll, and the it works. Is there something I'm missing here? Can someone point me in the right direction?

.net - WCF Service Hosted In A Managed Windows Service Connect Using A WCF Service Application

Jul 14, 2011

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:

Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.

It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

[2008] Make Web Service Ports?

Feb 2, 2009

I'm making an application that tracks jobs we log in our IT department and as I'm often out and about it would be handy to be able to use this app from my laptop and connect in to our server at our office. The problem is that a lot of the places I go block all outboundtraffic apart from port 80 and 443 (for HTTP and HTTPS). Now I know I could write an ASP.NET front end that I could just access over the internet but to be honest I just plain dont like making ASP.NET web pages and so if there is any way I could do this just through my standard desktop app that would be good.

I've heard a bit about "web services" and to me this sounds like a solution but I dont know enough about them to decide if I should use one or not.The main thing that will decide this is whether or not I can make this web service listen on port 80, is that possible? Also, is it hard work making something use HTTPS instead of HTTP so that the data is encrypted? I mean, do you have to do all of the encrypting yourself or is there some sort of automatic function you can use to handle this?

How To Make A Windows Service Work Properly

Aug 3, 2010

My project requires that a windows service checks up a table on a sql database(MDF) and if product existence is 0 then sends an email to some mail address and keep checking every 24 hrs.Now Im able to send mail messages but what Im not able is to make the service itself to work or at least make sure that is working.I do the following(correct me if I do something wrong or missing a step):

1. create a new project and choose windows service

2. add a timer and set to 4000 ms just to test not wait the 24 hrs lol

3. then open its event timer_elapsed and put some code on it, like a msgbox that would keep spamming every 4 secs just to test

4. at the event onstart I enable the timer by: timer1.enabled=true

5. at the event onstop I disable the timer by: timer1.enabled=false

6. right click then choose add installer

7. in the newer installed with the two objects:

a. serviceinstaller1 set its properties to: displayname: myservice and servicename: myservice

b. serviceprocessinstaller1 set account property to LocalSystem

8. build the project and install it by opening the VS console and type: "installutil c:path blah blahservice.exe" then hit enter

9. all successfull installed open the pc manager and run the service from the list and this should be the deal

Now my real problem is that by following those steps my service is sucessfully builded, installed, and started but after the 4 seconds no msg pops up so this leads me to think that is not doing anything or I did something wrong in the steps above. Is there another way to test if this service is working else than the msgbox or the log entry? Plus, Im working on my home pc which is a xp OS. I tried the same at college pcs wich are win7 and when I did install by the console it returned an error weird but in my home pc it doesnt(and I have to present my project at college at college and tomorrow

Make A Windows Service Terminate A Process?

Jul 25, 2011

I am working on a Windows Service project that is supposed to start automatically with Windows and it has a timer to check if a certain process is created (in this case "iexplorer") the service should terminate that process. In addition, the user should not be able to stop the windows service.

I was able to create the process and make start with Windows. I changed the property (CanStop) to False but that did not help because after a few tries the servise stops. I used a For-Next loop in the timer to check for the process to terminate but unfortunatly, it didn't work. The code I used is:

Dim theProcesses() As Process = System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcessesByName("Iexplore")
For Each currentProcess As Process In theProcesses

This is a bit of unusual problem that I'm experiencing, but recently one of the users of a production application started reporting errors in the system. These were traced to a 503 Service Unavailable error when making a call to a web service used by the application.

Now here's the odd part, only the one user is affected by this issue. Other users of the application have not reported any errors. When the user logged on to a different machine that worked for another user, they still received the error.

Windows Service: Multiple Instances Of The Same Service Class?

May 3, 2011

When you create a Windows Service, you create a list of the services you want to start. The default is this:

ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service}

Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?

ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service("Option1"), New Service("Option2")}

Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?

We have a server with multiple services written in .Net 1.1 and 3.5 running on a Win 2003 server. Everything runs fine, but when we stop a certain service, an unrelated service stops. I have checked and neither has any dependencies. The service we stop is in 3.5, and the unrelated service that incorrectly stops is in 1.1. We get no error messages, nor event log errors, so we are baffled.Does anyone have an idea as to what may be causing this?

Tear Down Wcf Service After Each Web Service Call?

I'd like to be able to release memory after the web service has received its response but cannot figure out how (WCF is still new to me). [code]...

Install Windows Service Using A ProjectInstaller And A Deployment Project ("Specified Service Already Exists")

Mar 10, 2009

I've created a windows service and started a deployment project for it. I have the project installer class in the service project and I've added the "Standard output etc.." from the service project as custom actions for the Deployment Project. When I attempt to install it, I get the error "Specified service already exists", which shouldn't happen (even though the service does exist) because the installer should be removing the old service and installing the new one.

I've checked that the versions are different, and that the Product Code is also different, also RemovePreviousVersions is set to true. Can anyone tell me why it isn't uninstalling my old service when I update then install again? .S: MODS: DO NOT MARK MY POST AS ANSWERED, IT IS RUDE, YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF YOU'VE ANSWERED MY QUESTION!Sorry, it gets ignored in my signature.Mods

Web Service Within A Windows Service?

The first one is rather confusing for us. We have a windows service that cannot connect to our web service, from within an external network. But we also have a GUI application for testing the connection prior to the Service starting that connects and sends us the required data. The GUI is used for entering proxy information that the windows service will also use to connect. We have several installs where the gui app uses the proxy creds to connect and does so o.k. but the windows service cannot connect using the same credentials. We do not get a 407 error most of the time. We are receiving the server failed to respond message.

.net - .NET XML Web Service, Consuming Class Not Able To Access Web Service Class?

Mar 21, 2012

I am creating a simple XML web service and have run into something I can't quite explain. My web service class has the following structure :

Imports System.Web.Services
Imports System.Web.Services.Protocols
Imports System.ComponentModel

[code]....

Invoking my method using the built in VS web service test harness works fine. I created another project, in another solution, to test consuming the web service. I added a web reference to my project and set it so I could reference my web service by using "localWS". Then in the page load event of my consuming class I tried to instantiate an object of my web service:

Dim srv As New localWS.MyWS

But there was no "MyWS" type found. There is however a localWS.MyWSSoapClient class. When I use it I can invoke my web methods. My question is, why can't I create a straight up version of MyWS class? In the tutorials I'v read, and in the book I have, example consuming classes for .NET XML web services can instantiate objects of the web service class they are consuming. As a further test I added a new web form to my web service project and from there I was able to instantiate a MyWS class.

VS 2010 To Window Service Or Not To Window Service?

Jul 20, 2010

I am making a server program, it works, cool.Made it display the info coming in via a textbox, the number of users connected, etc.I based it off of one of the members heres examples (jmcilhinney). However, I am kind of in a rock and a hard place.Do I try and convert it to a windows service so its on all the time? Or do I leave it in a exe format?I have never touched windows services before, but they look promising. However, this will be residing on a collocated server running Windows Server 2003.The problem with that is, if I run it. Person B, C, D, E, whoever.. can not see it due to the virtualized desk tops of RDC (even under the same username).I am kinda curious if I should make it a windows service, then make my 'display' program that just.. remotely taps into it to control it, and view stats and such. The 'server' will take info sent from the client, and add it into a database, then pass back some commands and such.
