I have a class with a lot of methods. This class and methods are in one file. These methods can be put into 3 groups based on the things that they can be used for. What would be a good way to break these methods up into the 3 groups? I was thinking about doing a partial class definition and breaking up these methods into 3 files.

I have tried Modules but I get multiple reference errorsd when I move like all of the reporting code to a module. The report code has nothing to do with the forms other than being able to call that code from an object on the form.

My setup may make this easier or harder but to be clear I am running Kubuntu 9.10 (latest stable) and WinXP in a VirtualBox VM. Obviously all VB6/VS2008 dev is taking place in the virtual machine.So maybe it's possible to have the linux host send through Ctrl+Break based on a key mapping, or maybe it's possible to remap directly in WinXP. I'd settle for any solution as atm I need to use the XP On-Screen keyboard to send a Ctrl+Break.
This is an IDE question for VB Express 2008. It might be a bug in the IDE, or maybe it's my fault somehow?
My main form is named FrmMain and in my application's properties I have set frmMain as my startup object. All of that seems like what a lot of coders do.
But while debugging I hit Ctrl-Break, as I have done for years, and I get an behavior in the IDE that I wasn't expecting. Upon doing so, I get the green background text and the green arrow indicating in a tooltip: "This is the next statement to execute when this thread returns from the current function." Even if I didn't have the designer document open, it automatically opens frmMain.Designer.vb in the editor and hihglights line in green. The line is of course: Partial Class frmMain which is line 2 of the file. (Yes, it's highlighting the second line of the designer-generated code.)
The thing is, frmMain seems to have fully loaded and it's my startup object. As far as I know there shouldn't be a "next statement to execute" at all because code should be idle. I don't want to see the Designer.vb document... I want to edit my own code. Even though my form is behaving just fine, could there somehow be an unfinished aspect of loading the form such that it is "not returning" from a function?

View 13 RepliesI want to get some HTTP source with VB.net. The page is huge though, so it would suit me to pull it in chunks. I'm also already reading about the VB.net background worker. So far I'm using this code: HTTP GET in VB.NET but my program stalls while it loads the page, for a decent amount of time. The page to get is http://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/, but don't go there unless you absolutely have to.
Should I stick with the background worker, and/or is there a way to split up the HTTP request?
I keep trying to encrypt a large file using this method: How to encrypt and decrypt a file by using Visual Basic .NET or Visual Basic 2005
However, these files can be upwards of 400MB. Naturally, I keep getting a system.outofmemory ex. Apparently, I can fix this by processing the file in chunks, but I haven't the slightest idea of how to do this.
I am new to VS 2008 but have used VB6 for years. I want to be able to run my program in the IDE but when a Msgbox displays a message I want to stop the program and see the MsgBcode. I am using Windows 7 and VS 2008 professional on a 64 bit machine. How can I do this? Do I have to install a 32 bit version of VS 2008?

View 4 RepliesI have a large wikipedia dump that I want to cut into different files (1 file for each article). I wrote a VB App to do it for me, but it was quite slow and crapped out after a few hours of cutting. Im currently splitting the file into smaller 50mb chunks using another app but thats taking a long time (20-30 minutes for each chunk). I should be able to cut each of these up individually if I do this.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a way to cut this file up quicker?
I have a list of files and all of them have a different size. I need to upload them in chunks of 250Kb (or less if it's a small file or if it's the last chunk of a file).What I would like to do is read a bunch of chunks (lets say 15 chunks), in a separate thread, and then store the chunks of data in some sort of list. This list must be available to other threads.
An upload thread (I don't need help with uploading itself) takes the first chunk from the list and marks the chunk as "currently being uploaded". When the chunk has been fully uploaded, then the chunk is removed from the list. A second upload thread takes the next available chunk in the list that has not been set to "currently being uploaded", etc. There are a total of 10 upload threads working at the same time.
As soon as a chunk is removed from the list, then a new chunk of data is read and added to the list.Does anybody know what kind of list I need or how I should do something like this? I don't expect people to write out the code for me, but I have no idea where to start with this.
I've been trying to create my own backup system by sending specific files to a server running on my desktop, and then having those files copied to an external. So far, I'm trying to send files using a tcp network. Unfortunately, for soem reason, tcp cannot send more than 9kb at a time, so when i tried to send a 30kb image, it recreated 1/3 of it. My fix to this problem was to send data by chunks of 8kb, then reconstruct the file chunk by chunk. For some reason, when I run the server and client, the client says it sends all the data, however the server seems to be stuck. Here is my code;

I understand the concept of rounding I guess, all I know is math.round(), but I need a break down of it so I can round a number like this: 14.789543 to this: 14.8 because after the 7 there is an 8, which means you would round the seven up. Can anyone tell me how this is done?And some more detail, I need to round to the nearest tenth.

I've tried this checking the "User-unhandled" box and unchecking the "Thrown" box for "Common Language Run-time Exceptions" and I've tried checking both boxes, and I've tried checking only the "Thrown" box, and I've tried unchecking both boxes.VS either completely ignores all run-time exceptions or breaks on both handled and unhandled run-time exceptions. Is my VS 2008 IDE broken or am I missing something?

I am trying to write the following application. A project has initial investment, yearly revenue and yearly expenses. The program should be able to take these data and calculate the break-even year, i.e. when the cumulative profits become 0. Also, it should have a listbox that would list the cumulative profit for 10 years. Refer to the example below. Now I know how to show it in the listbox but I am having trouble showing the break-even year. I know how to calculate it but how do you show it in years.

Last year (2010) I came across a FANTASTIC command that allowed me to take a string of variables with a common delimiter and break it all back out into separate variables (possibly an array) with one statement.

As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.

I have several other classes that use the 'management class' as a property to derive the value of several of its other properties.Is there a way for me to reference the outer class from the 'management class' functions without having to pass it as a parameter? View 7 Repliesi have a class call it clsFamily this class contains properties that make up a family object. This class works fine with no issues. Now i need a new class (called MyAccount) which contains 3 properties, an ID a user name and a clsFamily object. I have declared both classes as Friend from within my globals Module and define the clsFamily as family, however when i try to put this type within my 2nd class i get an error "Type 'family' is not defined" what am i doing wrong? i know i could get it to work fine by adding the ID and User Name properties to the clsFamily object but i need to define this as a new type of object as the ID and User name are not normally part of this class.

Why are the other files not throwing this error, why after leaving a working project for a few days am i now faced with a broken project and an error that does not make any sense?
