Apr 17, 2012I am looking for a VB.net book that strings me through the entire development process of an application (Prefered: WPF ,LINQ ,ADO). I have read a few books on OOP and VB.net with small code samples demonstrating the specific idea of the chapter.I think it would be really helpful if there was a book that programmed an entire application that uses a sql database (Northwind , Adventureworks).

VB2010 - Call Application.Run() In Application Without A Form - "Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object
Nov 12, 2009My problem is when i try to call Application.Run() in a application without a form i get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." when i run it outside VS. but if ran in debug or release mode it works just fine. i may just be forgetting to setup application right, but ive done it before in this same manor and it worked fine.

Commented out init_timer and init_ready, and now it causes the same error for the myName line. there seems to be something wrong with class Application. btw theres seems to be something wrong with the forum code formatting.

Apr 17, 2010Ever since upgrading to Visual Studio 2010, I'm running into an issue where the first web request of any type (WebRequest, WebClient, etc.) hangs for about 20 seconds before completing. Subsequent calls work quickly. I've narrowed down the problem to a proxy issue.If I manually disable proxy settings, I don't experience this delay:

What's strange is that there are no proxy settings enabled on this machine in Internet Options. What I'm wondering is if there is a way to disable proxy settings for my entire project in one shot without explicitly disabling as above for every web object.
The main reason I want to be able to do this is that I'm trying to use an API [URL] which uses web requests, but does not provide any way to manually disable proxy settings.I have found some information suggesting that I need to add some proxy information to the app.config file, but I get errors building my program if I make an edits to that file.

Jun 21, 2012I have a ListView with two columns, and before enter a new item in the listview, I want to prevent entering a duplicate value, so I found ListView.FindItemWithText to accomplish that.
But I realized that if I enter 232323, and then enter 2323, which is different but starts with the same digits as the first entry, the function returns that item as a match.
I wonder if there is any way to match the whole text (exact text) to avoid the above.

Windows - Access The My.Application Object From A Form Or Control Object?
Jul 6, 2011I have a solution with several Projects in it. There is a Windows App project (called ImportClient), and a Class Library (Import.Library). The Import.Library has functions to perform data imports (I have other applications in the solution that also need to call it). But the interactive application, I want to be able to pass in some form controls, and have it update the GUI. No problem. But, I also want to execute a DoEvents() so that the loop execution doesn't hang other interaction to the app.
So, ImportClient has a reference to Import.Library. But I can't add a reference to ImportClient to the Import.Library, because the compiler complains about circular reference, etc. I don't know how else to define the My.Application object of ImportClient as a parameter to the data function in ImportLibrary.
(I realize this is a dumb question - problem is, for this project I have a tight timeline, and haven't learned how to do the BackgroundWorker process. If you think I could pick it up quickly, I'm open to some hints about how to update the progress bar on the GUI, and how to pause / cancel the background task.)

Update Greg brought up the point about testability. Since the SqlObjects will contain very business-process specific sql I don't want them reused in multiple buiness objects. (Basic CRUD operations are all code-generated) Is there a way to make the SqlObjects accessible to only one business object in the business assembly (like yshuditelu and Greg Beech showed) AND expose the SqlObjects to the unit testing assembly?

Apr 26, 2010is it possible to make one application send a task to another application and recieve the result from that secondary app?i made a text editor program and i added a scan feature and i made another app that has ocr capabilities.The scanner ability is in my text editor program, the ocr program doesnt scan you have to input an image into it and it will give text result a few seconds later.the prob is alot of times the ocr code uses sooo much memory and crashes when its incorporated with my text editor, but individually each application works fine and doesnt take too much memory. Memory wont be even an issue if the ocr program is standalone so that when it is done decoding image the application can be made to exit. now here is the question, how do i make my text editor send the image to the ocr program and how do i make my ocr program send the text back to my text editor? is it possible? i mean the only way i know off is creating temp files in a certain folder and having a timer on each program that keeps waiting for temp files. That just seems like pretty lame coding to me i was wondering if there's a better way?
