Get The Corresponding Key For The Maximum Value In A Dictionary(Of SomeEnum, Integer) Using LINQ?

Dec 11, 2009

I've got a Dictionary(Of SomeEnum, Integer) that gets filled up while looping through some objects that have a property with type SomeEnum. Once the loop is done, I want the SomeEnum type that occurs the most in the list of objects. I also need the other counts as well for display purposes, hence the usage of a simple Dictionary(Of K, V).I am looking for a LINQ query to give me back the SomeEnum key that occurs the most by looking at each keys number of occurences. Or perhaps there's an easier way of going about it.I could do this:

Return (From kvp As KeyValuePair(Of SomeEnum, Integer) _
In Me.MyObjects Order By kvp.Value Descending _
Select kvp).First().Key

But wouldn't the sorting be a more expensive operation than trying to wiggle Max() in there somehow?

Use Linq ToDictionary To Return A Dictionary With Multiple Values In The Dictionary Items?

Jan 25, 2010

I want to group items from a linq query under a header, so that for each header I have a list of objects that match the header title. I assumed the solution would be to use ToDictionary to convert the objects, but this allows only one object per "group" (or dictionary key). I assumed I could create the dictionary of type (String, List Of()), but I can't figure out how to write it. As an example I have written a simplified version below.

Flatten A Dictionary Of Dictionaries And Sum The Values Of The Inner Dictionary With LINQ?

Apr 16, 2012

I have the following object:

countDictionary As Dictionary(of Category, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))

The Class has a Enumeration Property. For the purposes of demonstration, I'll call it MasterCategory.I have been trying to get out an object that looks like the following:

groupedCountDictionary As Dictionary(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer)

The best result I could get was:

Lookup(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))

From:

countDictionary.ToLookup(Function(o) o.Key.MasterCategory, Function(o) o.Value)

Which results in a IEnumerable (Of Dictionary(of Date, Integer)) for each MasterCategory value. However, I need that IEnumerable of Dictionary flattened to one dictionary with all the integers summed (total counts) for each date. I then tried to use various selects and group bys (from numerous stackoverflow posts) to "flatten" it, but my efforts have fallen short.

Current Code

[Category Class]
- MasterCategory As Enum
- Name As String etc

Does Changing Generic List Capacity Means Copying Contents?

Mar 31, 2009

If I increase the capacity of a given list, or add elements until count>capacity, does this mean the program is actually copying the entire list's contents to a new space in memory (similar to redim preserve with arrays)? If so, than I have really been hurting the performance of my lists, as before I was inserting and adding without a second thought. This seems a strong restriction on the dynamic abilities of lists.

I am currently trying to pass MyDictionary into a function, filter it into a new instance of MyDictionary and pass this new instance into another method. Here's the simplified version of my code:

This is in order to allow the user to enter an array (80 elements). I can stretch the DGV into 80 columns and limit myself to 1 row or I can do 1 column 80 times. Either way, I need to limit the user to a finite number of rows...

Find The Maximum Value Of A DataTable?

Jun 20, 2012

I have been very stumped by this one. I have a fairly large (~1500 x ~1000) DataTable of positive and negative integers only that I acquired from a .csv file. For my program, I need to find the maximum value of the entire table, not just in a single row or column. Optimally, the code would be short and sweet, but that's not always the case ;).

The name of my DataTable is BeamMap and I am trying to return a value of MaxValue (already declared as an integer). I can post the code I have for creating the DataTable upon request.

Extra Credit: (not really)

Is there a way to quickly find the location (ie., row, column) of said maximum value? So far, all of the examples I've seen check cell by cell for a predetermined value, which is rather inefficient for the number of data points that I have.

Maximum Size Of An Array?

Jan 13, 2010

What is the maximum size of a multidimensional array in VB.NET (in my case two-dimensional)? I'm using Visual Studio 2008, Framework 3.5 I found in msdn [URL]: "The length of every dimension of an array is limited to the maximum value of a Long data type, which is (2 ^ 64) - 1. The total size limit of an array varies, based on your operating system and how much memory is available. Using an array that exceeds the amount of RAM available on your system is slower because the data must be read from and written to disk." However, I am trying to use an array of data type single, with dimensions 64513 by 301 but Visual Studio seems to freeze when I execute the line to redimension the array ( Redim myArray(64513, 301) ). I have 4Gb of RAM and am using Windows XP (32-bit).
