View 5 RepliesI'm going through All-In-One Code Framework Coding Standards document and one of the recommendations is to add a file header comment at the start of every human-created code file. This is the first time I've seen such a recommendation and to me it's just an unnecessary and ugly clutter but I'm wondering if someone could explain why M$ recommends this?

View 1 RepliesI am once again struggling with my weekly project. I am assigned to write a program that converts a predetermined english sentence to both french and german. The code is to contain an Array and a structure. Also we have not covered retrieving array data from a TXT file, so we are to hard code in the array data. I coded the structure and the array, I added the array data, but am confused how to access the data. The examples I have found all deal with retrieving data from a TXT file. When i get an error concerning duplicated values found, it just catch the sqlexception, display a message and exit try. But i want it to continue adding the remaining record even when a record of duplicated values is found.

I have a database structure filled with data that I'm trying to write out to an XML file. Here's a taste of the way the VB code is structured:[code]I can't see or report any progress, because the processing is all tied to one giant LINQ query. Even if I can't make it any faster, I'd like to know how much longer I have to wait. My first version of this code had For loops instead of queries, so I could display progress, but it took a loot longer.Obviously I'd like to speed this up considerably. It seems like there should be a simpler way to convert the data to an XML file, especially since the database structure was created from the XSD in the first place.

I am using this to copy tables in an Access database(2003). the questions I have are:
1. How can I make this more 'obejct oriented'?
2. How can I copy just the structure of the tables and not the data?
(Currently both are occuring)

Can I fill in my list of people using a single line of code for each record? Something like this, it doesn't work, but this shows the sort of thing I mean.

It's easy enough to fill it in line by line. I could do that without problem. But I want to be able to look at the code and see the contents of each line. Doing it as above would make it easier to read.I could make it a multidimensional array of strings, rather than a structure.If it makes any difference I'm using Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition.

I'd like well documented code for opening Excel, creating/opening a Workbook, reading and writing data and closing Excel Workbook when I exit the VB2010 form.
I am developing a VB2010 application form which I'd like to work dynamically with an existing MS 2003 Excel spreadsheet that will be provided with the application . The VB2010 form provides some data input for cells in a worksheet (named "Fuels") in an existing Excel Workbook called "carbonfootprinter.xls". Based on the input data, calculations are performed and the corresponding results are output to other cells in the same "Fuels" worksheet. The results are then also graphed in the Excel Workbook. When the application form loads, I'd like VB2010 code that checks if the "carbonfootprinter.xls" exists and is open, if not then it should be opened to receive data input from the VB2010 form and to perform calculations,and finally the VB 2010 application should close the Excel spreadsheet

is this even necessary in VS2010 & .NET 4.0? I've been trying to take advantage of the new Windows 7 taskbar interfaces like the Jump List. The MSDN documentation/tutorial instructs me to include a System.Windows.Shell, but apparently Shell isn't a member of System.Windows. I downloaded the API code pack, but I am unsure of what to do with it. I've seen a few people on here saying that you shouldnt use GoTo in VB.NET and to be honest I've tended to agree as I have never needed to use it and there is always another way of doing something without using it. However, I'm just wondering what is so bad about it? I actually noticed that Microsoft seem to use it a fair bit in the internal .NET framework code, which is what makes me wonder why people are so against it.
