Windows API Code Pack For Microsoft .NET Framework?
Apr 14, 2010
is this even necessary in VS2010 & .NET 4.0? I've been trying to take advantage of the new Windows 7 taskbar interfaces like the Jump List. The MSDN documentation/tutorial instructs me to include a System.Windows.Shell, but apparently Shell isn't a member of System.Windows. I downloaded the API code pack, but I am unsure of what to do with it. The instructions say to open the main solution file and build it:QuoteTo build the library (except the DirectX related features) in Visual Studio 2008, please extract the contents of the WindowsAPICodePack.zip file in a new folder and build the included WindowsAPICodePack.sln file. And so I did that, but that is the extent of the instructions. I thought maybe it was a Visual Studio extension, so I tried accessing Shell again to no avail. Do I need to add each of the respective namespaces' projects to the target solution to use the API Code pack?

I'm compiling and testing the VB programs in a download from MS of the Windows API Code Pack at url...(which is in VS 2008 and needs to be converted to run on VS 2010). So far I've resolved most of the issues, but a couple are baffling. The code as downloaded for the Taskbar demo refers to icons in the project resources as My.Resources.Green and My.Resources.Yellow and Red. Fatal errors, even though all the help pages say this is the correct way to access them. I got the build to run by removing the "My."; has there been a syntax change between VS 2008 and 2010? When I run the app, I get a message from TaskbarDemo.vshost.exe which says "This demo application needs to register .txt files as associated files to properly execute the Task related features. Filetype is not registered." Does that mean that in trying to debug the app, I have to modify the registry to associate the test program with the .txt filetype?

I recently downloaded the Windows API code pack for .net, and seeing there was VB.net examples inside there, I opened them up. Upon building I get a warning that the referenced components 'Core' and 'Shell' could not be found. Looking in the code pack folder I see there are no DLLs at all, but instead a whole load of C# sources.
Do I have to download C# Express (which I want to avoid) to use the code pack or are there precompiled DLLs somewhere?

I am looking for verification on whether Application Restart and Recovery APIs work on Windows Vista or not. In the documentation the introduction says it designed for both Windows7 and Vista. Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft® .NET Framework provides a source code library that can be used to access some features of Windows 7 and Windows Vista from managed code.I did surf thru the issue tracker on the API home page, nothing mentioned on restart/recovery issues.
In the download, there are two sample projects specific to restart/recovery of an application, which has stopped responding (AppRestartRecoveryDemo), one in VB.NET and the second in C#. I tried both with dbWin32 to monitor that various operations ran and that there were no exceptions raised. All operations ran without raising an exception other than the restart failed and the initial recovery worked. Before working with the above projects I did rebuild the core libraries rather than use the supplied binaries.
When first running the project you must wait 60 seconds for recovery/restart mode to be possible along with registering for recovery using the following.
ApplicationRestartRecoveryManager.RegisterForApplicationRestart( _
New RestartSettings("/restart", RestartRestrictions.None))
I changed the restrictions above seeing if this would make a difference in regards to restart failing but it did not.In RegisterForApplicationRestart a check is made to ensure the app is running at least under Vista ThrowIfNotVista It works as I am on Vista. Next RegisterApplicationRecoveryCallback sets up the callback method (see figure 1) to invoke when the app crashes. So when a crash occurs I have verified all code up to Debug.WriteLine("Application shutting down...") executes in the Recovery callback and assume that ApplicationRestartRecoveryManager.ApplicationRecoveryFinished(True) and the return statement execute, as there are no exceptions thrown.
After the recovery callback method finishes I expect the app to restart. The "application is not responding" dialog says that the application will now restart but instead the application closes and never restarts. I am curious if someone else has worked with recovery/restart API and had success on Window's Vista to restart an application.' This method is invoked by WER.
Private Function RecoveryProcedure(ByVal state As Object) As Integer
Debug.WriteLine("ARR: Recovery procedure called!!!")
PingSystem()

I've seen a few people on here saying that you shouldnt use GoTo in VB.NET and to be honest I've tended to agree as I have never needed to use it and there is always another way of doing something without using it. However, I'm just wondering what is so bad about it? I actually noticed that Microsoft seem to use it a fair bit in the internal .NET framework code, which is what makes me wonder why people are so against it.

I decided to have a play around with the Windows API Code Pack and so far it has had some very interesting things. Something which I like in particular is AeroGlass. I have created a project to mess around with it to see how it works etc. and I am having some difficulties with the tranparency. If I put a textbox on the form for example, it displays fine. The text however is barely readable unless the form is over a dark background. The solution seemed obvious. Change the transparency key. However, there wasn't one set. Adding one stops the glass effect from working.

Is it possible to manually download the Microsoft Framework 3.5 or 4.0 ? That would be useful in order to have it during installation of a program . I know that when installing a VB .NET program , it asks to connect and download it , if the PC does not have it already . The problem is that some people have a very slow connection speed or don't even have any connection . Therefore it would be useful to have that installation kit in order to supply it along with program itself .

I have a question to ask you. All of the programs that I made always worked perfectly in my PC. But, whenever I test it on another PC, it requires a thing like... Microsoft .NET Framework Version 4. Which is really annoying, cuz that thing installs in 15 minutes. I mean, can I do something about this? Is this common?

It might be funny , but I'll ask anyway : is it allowed to create a program with VS2008 while at the same time it will use the Microsoft framework 4.0 ? I am asking because I use VS2008 while at the same time I have the impression that framework 4.0 is "lighter" than 3.5 .

I am creating a Visual Basic 2008 .net application that will be using the Sync Service for ADO.NET on Windows 7 Ultimate. The back end database is SQL 2008. Below are the basic steps I take when the error occurs
a. Add a Local Database Cache item to my application
b. Use the Configure Data Synchronication wizard for the setup process
c. Click the OK button to accept changes
d. An error message is generated, "The given key was not present in the dictionary".
I have attempted this several times and the error message presists no matter how I vary the options. I have also installed Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 successfully but the error persists. I also have all the following Dlls referenced in my project:
Microsoft.Synchronization.dll,
Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.dll,
Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.Server.dll,
Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.SqlServer.dll,
Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.SqlServerCe.dll.
I am sure I don't need all of these references but I figured it does not hurt to have them all referenced for now. I have the latest OS service and Visual Studio 2008 service packs.

I realize this post is rather long, but I wanted to give all the information up front instead of people having to ask me for more information. At the end of the re-installation of Visual Studio 2008, there is this message:
"Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard. MSI returned error code 1638" in the log file dd_error_vs_procore_90.txt.
I have searched on Google for this whole message and found some references to this error, but I have done what they said worked for them and it did not fix the problem for me.When I searched for just "MSI returned error code 1638", I got that it cannot install something because it is already installed:"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel".In Add/Remove Programs I see these two programs:
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.3
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.4
Are these programs/versions what the error is refering to? Am I safe to remove them and depend on the similarly-named item which would be newly installed with Visual Studio 2008 - "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard"? I still use SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on my computer, as well as 2008. I had installed VS 2008 on my computer before without this problem and also have VS 2005 and 2010.

For a reason I cannot explain, I now get compiler errors from the Application Designer whenever I enable the application framework in the VB.net IDE. I do not find much on this issue, except Scott Hanselman's admonition not to use this feature. I have mature projects in which this feature was enabled, but now even they will not compile. As this only began a few days ago, I have been trying various approaches to resolving the problem, up to and including removing VS2005 and reinstalling it, along with the framework, SDK, and all updates. No dice. The errors are below. This condition will occur even if I enable the feature in a new project.Does anyone have some thoughts and the cause and resolution of this problem?I probably should mention that I was using both VS2005 and VS2008 on this computer. I had been experimenting with 2008 for several weeks without incident.

How can i check the version before windows in vb without compact framework?

I have built a Dll and a Windows Service in vs2010. Both are targeting the .net 3.5 framework, but when I install it on the server it installs fine, but for some reason it targets the 2.0 framework and any time the methods fire that are using linq it crashes out with a clr20r3 error system.nullreferenceexception. Not really sure why it's not targeting .net 3.5.

1. Does Windows load the .Net framework at boot time? How can I check (eg. some DLL running in the background)? How much RAM does the framework use, so that I check I have enough to pre-load at boot time? Once loaded, will it stay in RAM?
2. What is the point of JIT once the application is installed on a given computer? Are there drawbacks about compiling into binary code applications that I use often on my own computer so that no time is wasted recompiling the application every time it's ran? If not, can I compile apps for which I only the .Net bytecode?
3. Is the framework downward-compatible, ie. will a 2.0 application run if I only have the 4.0 framework installed?

I am writing my first windows ce app. I am using an xml file (app.Config) to store state data... basically user preferences on the last location (connection string) that the person was using before closing the app. I am having trouble understanding what is happening on deploy. It looks like it is copying my xml file to the debug folder on deploy. My problem is, when I save the xml file it is not saving in my project. Is there another folder in which the emulator resides that contains all of the state data and possibly the file that I am writing out? I am saving the doc to the same filepath as I am reading in but it does not actually save or throw error or anything.

I'm working in VB.Net and I'm trying to make a piece of code more generic. In fact, there's a big Select Case statement that build a ProxyServer based on a value passed in parameter (a string).
Select Case _strNteraHL7
Case Constantes.NomPRPMIN306010
strUrl = ObtenirUrl("ProviderDetailsQuery", _strVersion, _strEnvir, True, _blnSimulCAIS, _blnSimulPDS, _blnSimulPDSSIIR, _blnSimulPDSInteg)
[code]....
or something similar, so I can remove all those big switch cases, that repeat the same thing 30 times.objWsHL7 being an object or type "object" at compiling.Again, in another switch case statement,
objMsgHL7Out = _objWsHL7.ProviderDetailsQuery(_objMsgIn)
objMsgHL7Out is a System.ServiceModel.Channels.Message
_objMsgIn is a System.ServiceModel.Channels.Message
_objWsHL7 is an Object

I am trying to convert a C#/XNA project to a VB.Net project with access to the XNA framework.
