View 8 RepliesDear Friends: I have some files in 1 folder directory that show "XML Configuration File" under type. But none of these files show the extension .config. The directory filesare like C0150,C0150_new,C0200,C0200_new etc. I need to change only 1 attribute of each of these files. I need to write a VS.Net project to do this. I have to send the .exe file(from bin directory of this VS.Net project) to my client and they will just double click the .exe file and it will change that attribute in all the .config files.
The C0150 file looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
[code]....
is there any tool to validate configuration file?
View 1 Repliesi'm creating a system now using vb.net 2005, .net framework 3.5. I'm using MySQL 5.1 as my backend and I've created a role so that I'll grant the specific user if he fits with the current role. My question is how can i modify the username and password of my database connection located at machine.config file under connectionStrings? The system will be used by different users and every user has its own account in the database.
Example:
I have a user named perry. The connection string would be like this:
<add name="LocalMySqlServer" connectionString="server=localhost;user id=perry;password=pass1234;database=mysql"/>
Another user named harris:
<add name="LocalMySqlServer" connectionString="server=localhost;user id=harris;password=harRis101;database=mysql"/>
You will find attached the source code of a small program. I wanted to know if it was possible to modify the connection string in Web.config and use a connection to MySQL. I made some attempt, but does not connect.

I am developing an application that Monitors a specific folder for file changes such as modify deletion, update, etc. The only problem I have is , the application doesn't fire up File events.
Here is the code:

I am working on a Windows Service application in VB.net 2008. The main objective of the application is to monitor starting and stopping of applications listed in a file. I build the service as system level by using
mManagementStartWatcher = New ManagementEventWatcher("Select * From Win32_ProcessStartTrace")
AddHandler mManagementStartWatcher.EventArrived, AddressOf
[code].....
I've never thought about it before; but I recently learned how I could modify the app.config file to add/remove trace listeners (for example, to redirect all of the Trace.WriteLine output to a text file).But I don't quite understand how it works? I know the corresponding C# code to do the same as the config (in this example) - does that code get generated/executed before my application's entry point?
View 3 RepliesAs a practice exercise at my college we have to make a simple room booking system, complete with its own config file. We're not allowed to use the one built into VB.NET (the professor wants us to adapt to not relying on things like that) so I've made my own. This is a sample:
// Config file.
// First column is the variable name that will be used to
// reference the value in the second column. Seperate each

In my solution I have 3 project and I want to create the single config file for all project, I mean instance of creating config file for all the 3 project I am creating one config file in the solution level that serve the purpose of all the project.
Now when i am reading the config file I am writing like this , in one of the project-
System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("CREATEDBY")
but this return me noting always.
App.Config file location - D:ProjectCommunico_SCEPMS Outlook Add-in
and the project location where I am to accessing the app.config file- D:ProjectCommunico_SCEPMSFileViewEPMSFileView
This is my config file
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

How to secure App.config file. As it contains all the passwords that connections use so any body can see the data in my databases. If we donot save the password at the time of making connection string, will it still be able to connect with the DB the same way?
View 1 RepliesCan someone tell me where this is? Most places on the net say it's in same folder as the .exe, but when I look in there I don't see it. There is an .xml file in there but that doesn't look like it's it.
View 5 RepliesI have this pretty simple application, it uses a webService to transfer data to my servers DataBase. Now it is very important for me to keep this application as one single file, and not having some XML files needed for it to work, but this is the case. I think the XML file holds the information to this webService, so without it the application crashes. Is there a way to get the application to work without this XML file, or a way to put the XML inside the exe archive?
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to use the following command:
Dim xmlFilePath As String = _
System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("XmlFilePath")

However, xmlFilePath shows up as Nothing after that line of code is run.
What's the correct code to get a setting out of the web.config file in an ASP.NET application?
NOTE: Although you can add keys individually to the <appsettings> tag, I'm trying to figure out how to use it with the "Settings" tab in the project's properties.
I've just moved an external dll into a folder different from the main exe directory, so I had to use the <probing> command in an app.config file. Now however, the application won't find the dll unless I have the app.config file in the same directory as the main exe! So how can I embed the app.config file in the EXE, or alternatively move it to the folder called 'Resources' where I store the external
View 4 RepliesI have been searching and posting regarding this problem and have found nothing to aid me. Discussion is either on web.config files or deal only with external files for connection strings or earlier versions of vb.net not 2008.I have already successfully put connection strings into an external config file, but trying the same approach with application settings has failed.There are two sections of the app.config involved with application settings.
1. the configuration and config sections at the top of the config. file where the section group and the section name are described.
2. the actually data for the application settings by section group section name which appears in the body of the configuraton section of the app.config.[code]
how to integrate the app.config file with an application written in VB.NET. Specifically I need to extract database connect strings from the app.config file.
View 2 RepliesBasically i have a .net application that has a directory path stored in the app.config file. this directory path outputs xml files that will be read by an asp.net web page.
Is there any way i can get the asp.net web page to read the directory path stored in the app.config file? Should i look to use the web.config file at all?
I did the following
Imports System.Data
Imports System.data.OleDb
Public Class Form1
Dim con As OleDb[code].....
By this i can fetch only one row(the last row) of the access....how to modify the above code to fetch all the rows starting from the begining from the database..........
I'm quite new to this app.config function. Hope someone can show me the road on this. I have a solution which comprise of 5 projects and one of them just to retrieve the value from the app.config file to be read by other projects. So, in the app.config file, i have my connection string stated inside and i can use it nicely.

How can i read my connectionstrings value which i stored in my app.config file (for windows application)?
i tried many times to use more than one option but i could not do it.
i am using VB.NET 2005 with framwork 2.
If I create a windows application. Where is the file for app.config? Can I modify it?
View 9 RepliesI'm using vs2010 and can't get this to work. The same code has worked in earlier versions. What has changed?
config file:
<appSettings>
<add key="ConnectionString" value="Data Source=MikeLaptop;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorksDW2008R2;Integrated Security=True"/>
</appSettings>
Code:
Dim strProvider As String = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("ConnectionString")
strProvider is always = nothing
How to do this now?
How do I get the first item in a combo box list to display in run-time by default? Is it possible to do this with a bound combo box?

I have an assignment I need to make and I have to make an app where the user can create a map/floorplan.So basically they open up the program go to create or edit and they should get a blank or already made floor plan.After that they should be able to add new icons/components to the floorplan or change them location wise on the floor plan.I have been searching into custom user controls and a few post I found on the internet about dynamically creating buttons.The dynamically creating buttons could do if the users can modify their locations and if it could save the whole form after being altered.However I want to be pointed in the right directions and know if any of these will work before I start doing more research and going more in depth.
View 9 RepliesI'm creating window application with VB.NET and flatfiles.the problem is how do i store the connection string in the app.config file that include the application.startup path?
<add name="cn" connectionString="provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + Application.StartupPath + "data;Extended Properties=text;" />
i got some error when writing to app.config.
"Missing attribute value on attribute 'Application.StartupPath'."
I am creating a test project using IBM's Rational Functional Tester(RFT) tool(we are using the VB version of it and it only supports till .net 3.5).In this project I am making all database queries using the entity framework.The problem is entity framework retrieves "Metadata", "Connection String" etc from the App.Config file,and RFT won't let me add a App.Config to the project(I guess it is designed that way -- I googled adding an App.Config file to an rft project and came up with nothing), and the Entity Framework requires you to have the app.config file at the entry point.I was building the string to pass to entity framework in code, but my boss really does not like that. So looking at my options I think any of the below 2 solutions should suffice
Is their any way to load an App.Config during run-time. Is their any way to add an App.Config to an RFT project(should really be my first question).
