Aug 20, 2010I'm putting the finishing touches to a fullscreen Winforms Application in VB (.net 3.5, VS2008). I need to hide the mouse cursor, so I've used:
Me.Cursor.hide()
this works exactly as you'd expect, until a timer triggered event runs (and no, the timer doesn't call Cursor.Show(),ANY event running seems to trigger this, and I have a lot of timers triggering events to control various aspects of my application).What I really want to accomplish is to have my application work like in Media Player, where the mouse cursor is hidden until I move the mouse or cancel fullscreen.Is there any way to hide the cursor until I move the mouse, close my form or exit fullscreen? I've tried lots of things, but can't find anything that actually works correctly (all due to triggered events running).

I've created a custom cursor that is a cross hair of sorts that makes it easier to target specific pixels, is there a way to change the mouse curse to a specified cursor when the mouse is NOT over the controlling form?

Aug 5, 2009I'm listening for the WM_SETCURSOR messages and setting the cursor there, it works most times, but not always. I've seen two other cases that I need to catch:
WM_PAINT: At least after a WM_LBUTTONDOWN the cursor is painted somehow without calling WM_SETCURSOR... WM_CAPTURECHANGED: Happening sometimes when the mouse is down and moving it.
Even doing all this the cursor sometimes flickers and the original one can be seen in some cases (eg: the instant when you roll over some object that sets the cursor to something else). I've been trying to look for some other patterns or messages but didn't see anything that would solve this problem.

Apr 21, 2009I'm trying to create a hook to monitor the current position of the mouse cursor. Nothing important, I just need to count some pixels during interface design and wanted to learn how to create a hook, so I decided to go for a hard way instead of a sane way.
I've found example code which declares the following function:

But Appdomain.GetCurrentThreadID generates the warning: "'Public Shared Function GetCurrentThreadId() As Integer' is obsolete: 'AppDomain.GetCurrentThreadId has been deprecated because it does not provide a stable Id when managed threads are running on fibers (aka lightweight threads). To get a stable identifier for a managed thread, use the ManagedThreadId property on Thread."
I've tried using ManagedThreadID, but that doesn't work. The thread ID returned seems to be the logical thread ID of the thread, as it runs in the .net runtime, rather than the Win32 thread identifier.
Calling the function ith AppDomain.GetCurrentThreadID works, but I really would like to have a "stable identifier" for my thread.
Can someone explain to me whether it is possible to use ManagedThreadID in this context (I assume not) and, if not, the things I need to avoid in order to stop the AppDomain.CurrentThreadID from becoming "unstable"?
Mouse Cursor Not Showing Up Over Windows Form
Feb 10, 2011Can anyone with more experience with User Controls see what I've done wrong here? The mouse cursor disappears as soon as the user enters the area of the Form although MouseMove, MouseEnter and MouseLeave event handlers are firing correctly. I want an overridden custom cursor to appear on the form with a reticle such as occurs here in this image as per the code listed below and in a
VS2010 solution on SkyDrive.
