Mysql Functions - SELECT Statement And Make A Function ?

I am trying to clean up my code a bit.
I made the following function:
Public Sub sqlUpdate(ByVal table As String, ByVal column As String, ByVal var1 As String, ByVal column1 As String, ByVal var2 As String)
Public CN As New MySqlConnection
Public cmd As New MySqlCommand

Which is fine, if I want to use mysql update all I have to do is call something like: sqlUpdate("test", "test", 0, "test", test) I was wondering if I could do the same with the SELECT statement and make a function. I cant think of a way to do it though...

I'm having a problem with Dim query As New MySqlCommand("Select count(*)....") I would like to take the variable query and do an If query <> 1 Then statement on it. Is this possible or is there a completely other way to go about this comparing the contents of a MySQL select statement. I'm rather new to Visual Basic.

I am attempting to have my program select a file, create DataTables and then perform some other functions. I want to be able to open another file and re-do the same steps.The problem I am having is that I add columns to my Datatables and when I try and to open another file while one is already open I get a message that a column of xyz is already added how do I properly "clear my datatable" or perhaps that isnt even the correct approach? I'm building a listview search feature in my app. (See the code below). It works really well, except if you search "T" then the code removes all items, if you search "t" then it removes every item except for those starting with "t". Is there any way to make a 'like' statement, or use some kind of wildcard to make the statement not case sensitive?

I have a class called PunchEvent. In the class I have an Enum called EventReason. I want to have a function Public Function ReasonToString(ByVal Reason As EventReason) As String. That is defined "near" the class (ie in the same file?) but is not actually part of the class (ie. it is not a member function). In c++ I guess this would be a static function? I tried to just define it after the "end class", but it says "statement is not in a valid namespace". Any recommendations?

I've just been burned again by the fact that there is no compiler warning when you fail to return a result in a Function that returns a Value type. I wrote the function:
Public Function CompareTo(ByVal other As MessageIndex) As Integer Implements System.IComparable(Of MessageIndex).CompareTo
Me._messageIndex.CompareTo(other._messageIndex)
End Function
which performs the CompareTo Function for two integers, then throws the result away and returns 0, because I forgot to either assign a value to CompareTo, or use Return, and that isn't flagged by the compiler because it's valid VB for a Value type.
I happen never to use "FunctionName = ReturnValue" because it hides information from maintenance programmers and also because I think it's insane .
Is there any way I can get the compiler to issue a warning whenever my Functions are missing a Return, whether it's a Value type or not?

I need to use a SELECT statement to select all data under a column name (like all employee names) and then to add the values to a listbox.
I usderstand that the select statement must be:

I'm trying to select the newest OrderID by CustomerID. But it keeps saying I have an error in my SQL syntax, even though it works in PhpMyAdmin. I'm using a MySQL db and an ODBC connector.

I am getting a syntax error for the code below.I am trying to create a user in the mysql database and add their information to a datagrid control all in one button click using two statements; one to create the actual user, and one to add the user and their additional information to a table on the database and then refresh the datasource which will display the new user's information in the datagrid control.
If anyone knows where i went wrong please feel free to critique my code and let me know; or simply offer more efficient alternatives to what im hoping to achieve.

I'm writing a VB.NET function with a ton of overloads. I've seen that most .NET functions have parameter descriptions in IntelliSense. For example, when typing in String.Compare(, IntelliSense says Compares two specified System.String objects and returns... you get the idea. What I am trying to do is have a class where the functions of the same name are both instance functions and shared functions.
Public Shared Function Get...(byval xx as xx)
and
Public Function Get...
The Public Function uses a Property xx created in the constructor, whereas the Shared Function has the parameters (byval xx as xx).

Is there a way in vb.net to create a sub/function that will take as an argument some kind of pointer to another function, and allow this new sub/function to execute the passed function? What I have are 10-12 xml-rpc functions I am calling against a remote server. Each of these functions has different argument lists (one takes 1 string, another might take 3 strings and one int, etc). I am currently working on a project witch contains lots of functions and properties. These functions and properties are stored in the dll. If I reference to this from within my project, these functions and properties are all in the same namespace or class. (I don;t know how it is called)Example:If I type the root namespace: Functions. I get all the functions. I would like to organize them in:
Functions.Maths (All the functions involving maths)
Functions.Internet (All the functions involving the internet)
Functions.Language (All the functions involving languages)
I tried using classes but I cant access the properties when they are stored in a class. I don't know why.
