Option To Create Shortcuts - Setup Project?
Mar 16, 2010
I know how to create shortcuts on desktop and program files but i want to make an option with checkboxes...so that you can select if you want those two shortcuts or if you don't them.I've tried this with checkboxes (in User Interface), i've set checkboxes properties and changed "User's desktop" and "User's Start Menu" conditions (in File System). "CHECKBOXA1" for desktop shortcut, "CHECKBOXA2" for start menu shortcut...but it doesn't work... both icons are visible every time.

I'm trying to add .lnk files to a setup project but am unsuccessful. I have 2 custom shortcuts that I created which link to a network share, but everytime I try to add them to the setup project in the users desktop or start menu, vs simply doesn't allow it. No message box or error box appears, I select the .LNK file to add and it "pretends" to add it and allows me to select it, but doesn't appear in the setup project folders.

Now that I've got this service that runs really great on my 32-bit development machine when I use InstallUtil.exe to install it, I'm ready to take it to the next level and generate something that I can use to install it on my 64-bit production server. I've never done this before, so I'm looking for detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to "publish" this Windows Service that I've written, or make it such that I can take some kind of file (or set of files) and install my service on another machine. I'm looking for a way to do this using Visual Studio 2010. I think the processes are different than in previous versions of Visual Studio.

I'm trying to do a setup project with VS2008 for my VB .NET application. I would need to create a text file into the installation directory based on the answers the user who installs the program gives. Idea is that I need to have the installation path variable in a text file so that I can read it. And also some other directory specifications too.
I could do the following:
Write the wanted information to the window registry and after the installation is ready, create another application that is run at the end of the installation to create these files.

I want to create personal folders during installation. I did the following steps:
Right click on your setup project ->
View -> File System
Right click on node "File system on
[Code]....
I know the above steps are correct and should work because i did it in the other application (solution) and worked fine. When i did same exact steps (of course i changed the folder name to be created), the application gets deployed but when i install, i don't get the Personal Folder under Documents? I wonder why did it work with my first solution and didn't work with the current one!

I really like the coding speed that vb.net provides, but I don't like the possibility to forget to declare variable types, return types of functions, etc. and that is why in each class I use[code]..
Is there a way to define those two options on the project/solution level?

In a VB.NET Winforms application, I have a form that contains both a datagridview and a textbox. I have some menu item entries that have shortcuts of Ctrl + X, Ctrl + C, and Ctrl + V that operate on the datagridview. However, these override the default cut, copy, and paste shortcuts for the textbox. How can I make the menu shortcuts only apply when the datagridview has focus?

I've finally got a project compiled and tested and ready to roll out.I have discovered that the "Publish" option is not what it seems, and that we must create a separate "Setup Project" to carry out the task of installing the files.This is not the most intuitive process I've seen, and the online help on that subject is not easy to understand.I was hoping that someone could direct me to a tutorial or guide that would step me through the specific approach I need. Many of the other guides online are vague and address multiple scenarios and do not separate the approaches very well.I have the contents of my project in /bin/release. It runs nicely by iteself with no errors.Here's what I need:
1. To create a setup exe that I can distribute that will install my software, with all of the supporting (resource) files and folders.
2. I need the setup process to force the installer to "agree" to a EULA.
3. I'd would like to provide an image on the installation screen/popup.
4. I would like the software registered in the registry and rely on it being there in the registry.
5. I need it to default to program filesprojectname (it does by default)

I new to this Forum and relatively new to VB programming. I have read some really good posts here and thought I would ask about a perplexing problem I'm having. I createdindows Form application, built it and deployed it with no problems. However, when I added a small block of code, re-built the app and went to add the app to the Project Output Group in the file system editor the project was not in the Project drop down list. I closed the Setup project and deleted it from the project folder and checked my code and re-built the app and tried the Set Up project again with the same result

Does anyone know why there would be no option to create a database project in VS 2008? In the New Project dialog, under Project Types I have no node for Database Projects. I've looked under Other Project Types as well. Every tutorial I read says this option should be in one of those two places, but not for me :-( I do have SQL 2005 installed on this machine.

Public Function SayHello() As String
Return " Hello."
End Function

I am learning Visual Basic Express 2008. When I follow step #5 below, the option Set as StartUp Project does not exist. How I can accomplish this. To create a test project for your class. Open the Persons project that you created in the previous lesson. If you did not save it, you will first have to go back to the previous lesson, Adding Methods to a Class, and complete the procedures.
On the File menu, point to Add, and then click New Project.
On the Templates pane in the New Project dialog box, click Windows Forms Application.
In the Name box, type PersonsTest and then click OK.
A new Windows Forms project is added to Solution Explorer, and a new form appears.
In Solution Explorer, select the PersonsTest project, and then on the Project menu, click Set as StartUp Project. In the Solution Explorer, select the PersonsTest project, and then on the Project menu, click Add Reference. The Add Reference dialog box appears.
Click the Projects tab, and then select Persons and click OK.
Double-click the form to open the Code Editor, and then enter the following declaration just under the line Public Class Form1.
